I realize this is not at all the point but I'm losing my mind at the idea of a boring hotel costing $225/night. my fellow americans, for $225/night you can get an absolutely banger hotel. I stayed at a swank art deco hotel in chicago for $180/night. the hotel in boston I stayed at with the $7 glasses of milk was $279/night, but is currently offering rooms at $178. I've only stayed in an AirBNB one time (for two months, at $60/night), but if those prices are normal for airbnb and that's a normal thing you can afford, holy fuck just get a hotel. $225 is like one tier below "the hotel personally picks you up in a horse-drawn carriage and throws rose petals at you."

As an older woman who has spent many years traveling alone, I have opinions. Many about safety and security. Because as a woman traveling alone, that's where I tend to focus first. And AirBnB just doesn't deliver.

I've stayed in a few AirBnB/Vrbo situations because I was vacationing with friends who insisted those would be better. Sigh. Look, 5 people and 5 towels for 4 days isn't an ideal situation. I'm cold. Where is the extra blanket? Who do I contact for assistance? The owner doesn't even live in this country. Why is this house on a street where everyone knows we're a group of tourists with money and I've been warned to keep the door locked and not go out alone?

Me making my own arrangements - small, quaint inns are my lifeline. Not just because they have extra towels, blankets, pillows, etc. But because they have staff who can help with things. And smaller inns often have more controlled access than big hotels. (I was recently in London. Entry to the very private hotel was controlled by the front desk. My room was under the $200 range.) People at the inn know who the guests are. Also the inn arranged taxis for me. All I had to do was say "I need to leave for Victoria station about 7am" and everything was taken care of.

If I were to have a health crisis or problem of some sort, there is someone there to help call for medical aid or police or whatever service is needed. Trip down the stairs in an AirBnB and i'm there until the next person checks in.

Many smaller inns offer free breakfast, tea and cookies, perhaps even an evening glass of wine.

All that and I don't have to clean the hotel before I check out.

okay so apparently we just discovered that plants emit clicking sounds too high pitched for us to hear, and are noisy when they're stressed but quiet when content

There needs to be more research done into this, and as of now we can't say why the sounds happen but. WHAT.

The plants emit a clicking noise when they are dry; they emit no noise when they have sufficient water. This is described in the article in terms of the plants experiencing "water stress," but this isn't "stress" in the emotional sense, and the sufficiently watered plants aren't described in the article as "content." The noise "could simply be bubbles forming and popping within the plants’ water-carrying tissues," and there is currently no evidence suggesting that it is made intentionally. It is possible that animals can hear it.

If you're on the app, immediately go to your dms and then "add friends". After the latest update they allow your contacts to find you and have that option turned on by default, so make sure it's unchecked!

This is very obviously not great for a multitude of reasons, but especially for people in vulnerable positions who do not want people in their contacts to see who they are on discord and/or know they have discord in the first place. I've also tried finding out if this is a thing on desktop but haven't been able to find any mention of it, so either it's not a "feature" (yet) or they've hidden it. Either way, stay safe, and turn off finding friends via contacts!

For anyone who finds the check turning itself on, go to your settings in the discord app > privacy and safety. Scroll down to "Sync Contacts" and turn it off.

Edit: Also turn off both phone and email under "Discovery Permissions" while you're there.

Y'ever think about what absolute mad decadence we live in that "vanilla" means "plain"

Anytime someone says 'it's just vanilla ice cream' I have to restrain myself from saying, "ah yes, the flavor produced by the seeds of a tropical orchid, a flower which blossoms for a single day before dying, the second most expense spice in the world. Just that."

Historically, the spices I have in my cabinet are an embarrassment of riches. I have there a large container of whole black peppercorns which I grate fresh over my food. Multiple containers of cinnamon because I forgot I already had some. Ginger, cardamom, red pepper flakes, whole cloves and ground, nutmeg and turmeric. Kings and emperors have not eaten food so well spiced.

I have vanilla ice cream in my freezer (cold! frozen! when the rich would pay fortunes to send for ice from mountains to chill fruit in the summers). I am going to put on my silk robe, fix myself a bowl, and feast.

I’ve been reading through the notes and I just have to say that I absolutely promise, promise, promise you that nobody in the dental surgery is there to judge you, and we’re certainly not mad at you. Cavities happen. Even to dentists. You think your dentist has a mouth full of virgin teeth? Unlikely! They’ve all visited eachother’s surgeries to get a quickie filling (ooh, saucy) between patients. They understand that life can get in the way of oral hygiene sometimes. They understand that life’s too short not to eat chocolate. They understand that you’ve got to live. I swear to you that everyone in that room is just there to help you. Please, please, please don’t stop going to the dentist because you’re worried they’ll be mad at you. It’s really not the case. They understand. It’s fine. It’s really, really fine. Please go to the dentist. I promise you it’s ok.

You would not believe how comforting this is.
