In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

If you want to read an academic article that's behind a paywall just email the author and ask politely if they will send you the article. Most academics will be thrilled that you want to read their work and will gladly send it to you.

See the chap with glasses and an incredible moustache in the bottom right? that's Magnus Hirschfeld, the gay Jewish doctor who ran the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexual Research) in Berlin. It was largely his books, his research that the Nazis burned.

It is important to note that this action was not an "oh, Nazis ALSO targetted other prople". They directly linked Hirschfeld's institute and research to claims of a Jewish plot to destroy German society.

If a website has a paywall, like New York Times, DO NOT use the ctrl+A shortcut then the ctrl+c shortcut as fast as you can because then you may accidentally copy the entire article before the paywall comes up. And definitely don't do ctrl+v into the next google doc or whatever you open because then you will accidentally paste the entire article into a google doc or something!!!! I repeat DO NOT do this because it is piracy which is absolutely totally wrong!!!

Also do NOT append "12ft.io/" before a URL ! Typing an URL like this https://12ft.io/<URL> will redirect to a site that would break the display of the page by removing the paywall !

Honestly it's kind of prohibited to mash CTRL+P before some paywall windows can load in to get a PDF of the article. Really shouldn't be done tbh very dangerous🤷🏿‍♂️ ❌️

And you should absolutely remove the right click button from your mouse so you can make sure you never commit the illegal action of clicking 'Inspect', then clicking 'settings', then under 'Advanced Settings' clicking 'Disable Javascript', which in many cases disables the paywall window, which as we all know is a very risky act!

In mine and many other east Asian cultures, the dragon traditionally symbolises things like power, wealth and strength (imperial symbol and all)

I think we often forget that in the story of the Great Race, the dragon came in fifth because it'd stopped to give people rain. Then it'd stopped again to push a rabbit adrift on a log across the wide river so it reached the shore safely (that's why the Rabbit year comes before the Dragon).

Dragons aren't meant to just be powerful - they are meant to do good with such power, and to help those in need.

So in this lunar new year, I hope you gain more power, so that you might be able to help others. I pray you have abundant resources so you may give to yourself and those around you. I wish you courage, endurance, kindness and generosity, for yourself and your people.

As an SA survivor genuinely gonna need non-SA survivors specifically to shut up about the graveyard scene with Astarion not being consensual or about the drow brothel scene proving he can't actually consent and blah blah blah forcing Astarion into things and acting like healing is linear and he has no autonomy at all.

To say those things and accuse others of taking away his agency and crossing his boundaries because he couldn't possibly genuinely consent is in turn taking away his agency and disregarding his boundaries.

SA survivors are not fragile little things for you to infantilize and treat like glass and like you should never even talk about sex or imply that we can have sex again in front of us. Thank you for treating me like what I choose to consent to and my autonomy doesn't matter.

Astarion's arc is about him healing and sometimes having setbacks and him being confident and safe enough to say no but also confident and safe enough to say yes. And sometimes that yes really works for him (graveyard scene, something he initiates and makes sure pc is okay with as well). And sometimes it doesn't (the drow brothel scene where he clearly desires the capability to do it and wants to try and so he consents and even though it didn't work for him ultimately it's something he is capable of consenting to and wants to try. This is shown clearly by the fact that if his quest isn't completed he will say no. If he truly wasn't able to actually consent himself then he would've either said no or said yes both times, the fact that there is a difference depending on where he is in his story says a lot).

This also is applicable to him being polyam and people arguing on whether he's really comfortable with Halsin and if he's actually polyam. He is perfectly okay to say no to being polyam with other characters. He has no problem asking you to either be exclusive with him or to break up with him and be with another character if it's not Halsin. It's extremely likely that he's new to a polyam dynamic as he's also fairly new to having a genuine loving relationship in general. It's not that he minds being polyam or that it upsets him if tav/durge is with Halsin, it's likely just unfamiliar adding a new person when he's also kind of figuring out what he still wants with tav/durge and what they are.

Astarion can consent to things and does and will put a stop to things if his boundaries are crossed or he feels unsafe or uncomfortable. Yes, he has setbacks and things that still make him uncomfortable, but he will straight up leave if it goes too far for him. To imply he (and in turn other SA survivors) cannot consent because he has trauma and he's still healing just says you don't actually respect his autonomy. Him being able to say yes and that yes being respected and understood is just as important as him being able to say no.

Astarion's choices are all things he consents, even the very first sex scene with him. Are they all the healthiest choices? No. Are they all still things he himself consented to? Yes.

Fuck off and leave SA survivors and what we do with our bodies and our autonomy and our healing the fuck alone, the infantilization is fucking infuriating.
