The Voyager 1 update is why I believe AUs where Schwarz/Kyoji survive and regenerate are possible. And why I love them so much.

See, I had just assumed that it took them a year to grow enough cells to form usable bodies with.

Though I suppose either one works, depending on what circumstances you want them to regenerate in. If you wanted them to wake up somewhere safe and surrounded by family, you might decide that someone found some remaining cells and Dr. Kasshu was able to reinstantiate both of them.

If on the other hand you wanted things to get worse before they get better though, you might decide that Schwarz regenerates faster (due to having already been an android and having usable specs and such), and spends a significant amount of time taking care of Kyoji, who is taking longer.

You might decide that near the end of this, Schwarz starts thinking ahead about getting the two of them off of Lantau island and into an area that has infrastructure not destroyed by the Gundam fight.

Schwarz leaves him alone for an hour. In what is either an instance of phenomenally bad timing or planned malice, that is when an unknown aircraft lands right by their hiding place, and vanishes with Kyoji before Schwarz can even get close enough to get a good look at it.

Schwarz isn't an idiot, so he scours the news for weeks, hoping to find evidence that this was some kind of rescue attempt, and that Kyoji is safe and back in Neo Japan with their family. He does not find this evidence. He eventually determines that he is still legally dead.

Schwarz has no money, no proof of his identity, and the obstacle of being made entirely of DG cells (which after the Devil Colony people are almost certainly extremely afraid of), so he's not going to be able to secure a shuttle transport to the colonies to get help. He decides that he's going to have to do his best to investigate while limited in reach to Earth, and with a weaker body than he had in the Gundam Fight (because he didn't have a corpse to convert this time around).

Schwarz miscalculates while breaking into somewhere to gather information, gets into a fight that he doesn't have the energy to win, and gets captured by some group or another that either wants a renewable culture of DG cells, or to outright regrow the Devil Gundam. This could be headed by a regenerated Wong or Ulube, or an entirely new set of fuckers. Either way, Schwarz is in a really terrible position that he can't get out of himself, and needs to be rescued.

(I have a few conflicting ideas about what could be happening on Kyoji's side of things, the briefest of which to explain being that he actually was rescued, but the Kasshus are dealing with an absurd amount of bureaucratic bullshit and unprecedented technicalities trying to get him declared not-dead. This is the least angsty option, but it appeals to me in that it would allow Kyoji to be at the forefront of the attempt to rescue Schwarz.)

(To make the scenario of Schwarz getting captured more believable and more painful, I think it's possible that he foresees having an energy/strength problem and actually recruits someone to serve as an investigation partner and battery in exchange for Schwarz altering their body with DG cells. This partner is injured during a mission, Schwarz doesn't want the guilt of harming them further, but also can't bring himself to give up on a potential lead. He takes a risk, goes back in alone, and pays for it.)

As someone around for 9-11 and the "NEVER FORGET NUMBER #1 GREATEST TRAGEDY EVER IN HISTURY" response to it I am in thrilled and invigorated by the fact that younger people just make amogus memes and TikTok nonsense about it. A huge chunk of America cared more about it than any entire genocide and thought you would cry learning about it. They hoped it'd make every generation patriotically angry forever and ever and want to join the military. Instead you Photoshop the towers into squidwards house and shit. Never stop lol

I’m physically unable to take 9/11 seriously, entirely because my grade 9 english teacher was bizarrely obsessed with it. We basically had an entire unit on 9/11. We watched that documentary from those students that were doing a documentary of firefighters and wound up getting the only footage of the first plane hitting. We did a novel study of a book about some kid being in one of the towers for take your kid to work day and him and his dad squeezing past the wreckage of the plane to escape in time. We watched that Nic Cage movie of him being a firefighter during 9/11 that gets stuck in an elevator shaft when the place collapses. I am dead fucking serious, we had to make up fictional people that died in the attack, write an obituary for our 9/11sona’s, and then write and deliver a eulogy as their grief-stricken parent. At one point in the unit the teacher clarified that she hadn’t personally lost anyone to the attack, nor was she anywhere near New York when it happened. She never bothered to ask if any of us had actually lost someone in the attack, which kind of seems like a thing you should do before making us invent fictional victims to give eulogies for. The unit began with her demanding to know where we all were on the day of the attack and what we remembered, and she started crying when we told her that 1. we were two years old at the time and couldn’t remember shit fuck, the closest thing was one of the older kids kind of thought they remembered being very confused at adults freaking out over the TV but that could have been literally anything, and so this meant that 2. we were the last class she would ever teach that could possibly remember 9/11. Probably didn’t help that someone pointed out that we were the class born in 1999, so in two years she’d have students that hadn’t even been born during 9/11. That may have contributed to the teacher crying over the whole thing.

A New History of Fandom Purges

On November 24th, 2018, I posted a list of major deletions of sites or of content on sites that stripped fandom of its history. A bunch of pro-shipper blogs had just been deleted, and people were nervous. I suppose I was thinking “All this has happened before…”

On December 3rd, 2018, Tumblr’s Department of Irony announced the NSFW ban. Thanks for providing this salutary lesson to The Youth and a billion reblogs to me, I guess.

Today, we have AO3 for writing. Audio, images, and video are in as much danger as ever, yet fans attack AO3 every donation drive. For those of you who forget our past…

HERE IS WHAT HISTORY HAS TAUGHT US!

This is only a small taste of the many times that:

It’s not always malicious. It’s not always about us. But we lose every time.

Some of these purges hit everyone. Many of them hit m/m content specifically or female gaze-y material in general. This is why antis are dead wrong. This is why anti-fujoshi policies end up being anti-m/m policies. This is why we need clear labeling, not content restrictions.

This is why we need AO3.

And it’s why we need a solution for audio, visuals, and video too.

So grateful for the historical memory and the long view on a phenomenon many of us have come to late, and/or take for granted.

And this is why AO3 generates twice its goal amount in just a few days: they are irreplaceable.

I’m gonna assume that all the other sites before AO3 allowed slavery fics and pedo shit and Nazi fics and racist ass fics and shit as well and never fixed it, like AO3. They need to fix that shit and ban it if they wanna be great. Asking for donations and not taking a stance to fix that shit don’t sit well with me.

This is a strong argument for multiple archives.

AO3 itself was set up to be a safe haven for even the most repulsive fic. (And, yes, we very much thought in those terms. A test case I brought up while we were writing the TOS was that rpf snuff porn by male authors about female celebrities. Ughhh.)

Protecting vile fanfic is central to what AO3 is. It would have to abandon its mission to be the archive you want.

I personally support this stance on content because the more restrictive archives of the past (which is most of them) did not effectively keep out anything I hate, but they did regularly go after content I want to protect. Even very reasonable “no gross stuff” policies get twisted back on the most vulnerable people and the most #ownvoices content.

But that’s no reason for AO3 to be the only archive or the only valid content policy.

Many archives of the past had mods vetting all fic, whether for content or quality. Many archives took moral stances on underage fic. I can’t think of a single instance of one explicitly trying to be a safe space for fans of color though, unfortunately.

The archive you want is valid, but it’s not AO3.

olderthannetfic: here’s a huge list of the history of fandom purges that have happened and are continuing to happen. purges almost always harm minorities first. AO3 was set up so that it could be a place where no purge ever occurred again.

Is it me or are they focusing on female fanfiction?

The people getting things deleted or me and the commenters?

In general, yes, women’s art is attacked more frequently. You see that in all types of art, high and low, fic and original. I’m sure some of the people advocating censorship are especially upset by fic because they expect women to produce didactic, clean art.

But as for why there’s an overall focus on women, it’s because fic is mostly written by women.

There are some male-heavy spaces like Spacebattles or FIMFiction, but they are the exception, and they don’t change the overall trend in fic fandom. The most relevant data we have on fic writers is probably the following:

Bear in mind that Reddit is famously guy-centric, and their fic space is still way more than half women. The AO3 numbers are probably more representative of fic fandom on Tumblr.

So, yes, there tends to be a female focus in discussions like this on Tumblr.

This, incidentally, is also why some organizations like the ACLU will protect the constitutional rights of even people that they themselves find reprehensible. “I hate them and I hate what they are saying, but if they are safe to speak, then so are the rest of us, and if they aren’t safe to speak, then there’s no guarantee that the rest of us are, either.” Chiming in as someone who regularly criticizes racism, sexism, casual underage, etc in fandom here on Tumblr, I’m also glad that AO3 protects those fics. I think my primary fandom is racist as hell, and increasingly more and more of the fics are too. I want the fandom to be more diverse and tell better, or at least less racist, stories - but I do NOT want AO3 to be purging all the racist fics. That accomplishes nothing, and puts everything else I value in my fandom in danger and at risk.

As much as I appreciate what everyone is saying, standing up for fandoms/fandom works, regardless of how much we don’t agree with them. Though I add this image to every post that I see that mentions Anne Rice and fanworks; mind the date…

My DC muse has returned with a burning vengeance after four years being almost completely dead in the water, so here's two attempts at our friend @thedragonchilde's baby boy Schuyler Dunne, AKA Cold Case, because we've missed him for all of that time.

On the left is a cold attempt on our phone and stylus using Samsung's art app PENUP, from memory and having never done so before. As you may be able to tell, I Was Struggling, and honestly I'm just glad that it doesn't look worse.

On the right is a pencil sketch, with references this time. An Attempt Was Made at blush and glass tinting. Gods, we haven't done traditional in forever, but he was a worthy subject to christen the sketchbook we got for Christmas. However we do not have a functional scanner right now so forgive the questionable camera shot.

We realised partways through the second one that while we technically have drawn Sky before, this is the first time we've done so in our own art style, as the previous drawings were just silly chibis.
