So question: explain how if a lesbian is ace, they’re a lesbian, if a gay man is ace, they’re a gay man, but a hetero ace person isn’t straight? The definition of straight is only being attracted to the opposite gender. It doesn’t entail that you also need to want to fuck in order to be straight, but for some reason if they don’t want to fuck, they’re automatically LGBT? That’s the reasoning I hear a lot, but it makes absolutely no sense. Explain yourself.

Idk if u actually want an opinion but here mine is. A bit long-winded and still doesn’t cover everything, I’m real tired, but.

1) Asexual ≠ not wanting to fuck, for starters. This is disingenuous, and assumes all ace people don’t have sex and all non-ace people do. Asexual is defined as lack of sexual attraction to any gender and is its own standalone orientation, as is aromantic

2) Unless they’re grey-a, the assumption is gay/bi/pan/straight ace/aros are using the SAM. Under this model, attraction is split and there r two orientations, so to speak

3) bc of this, aphobes pulled the ‘you’re just Watered Down Gay’ bullshit, hence the ‘well actually no you’re not’ response. So yes, straight aces r straight, just as gay aces r gay. But they’re also ace. Ace/aro r still separate non-straight orientations, not just a void with no material reality

4) This is where opinion splits. Inclusionists believe because ace/aro is inherently not straight, that cis straight aces are included on the basis of their non straight orientation. Whereas exclusionists insist the straight overrules the not-straight. (The whole sga/trans argument, while a valid opinion, isn’t fact. It was created on tumblr for tumblr discourse)

4a) While straight can be defined as attraction to the opposite binary gender, being ace as well often denies full access to straight privilege by straight people (because the StraightsTM assume you should be het in every which way) and therefore contributes to a different material reality than Straight ppl. Similar (although certainly not equivalent) to how straight trans people are usually denied straight privilege.

Mostly tho, it’s otherwise LGBT aces/aros who want the intersections of our identities recognised and supported, who want to maintain aspec resources in LGBT places that already have them, who want to stop the constant mocking of a-spec identities by people who should understand. And aroaces have often been involved under the B before the term ‘aroace’ was coined to express their experiences. And keep in mind het aces/aros are a very small minority of an already small 1% and would only be welcome under the wider community (in spaces that literal cishet allies r welcome) and in specifically ace/aro spaces, rather than invading or whatever.

Personally, I believe anyone not straight or cis enough for cisheteronormative society should be included in the wider community. But I realise the LGBT movement isn’t a monolith or even a coherent community, and different places will either exclude or include, and people should just live and let live

2: wtf does “grey-ace” mean. Does it mean you feel like a “little bit” of sexual attraction or what? Also, wtf is the SAM.

3: I’m glad to know you’re a reasonable person who doesn’t think het aces are straight. This post was kinda more directed towards people who think that way. Also, I have never met reasonable LGBT people who refer to LGBT people without sexual attraction as a “watered-down gay”. If you have, I would like to see sources. I’m not denying it is true but I would like to see what makes you believe that.

4: Considering in heteronormative society, people who experience heightened sexual attraction rather than a lack thereof are also “denied full access to straight privilege” I’m not entirely sure what your point is here.

I can’t disagree with you there. I personally believe that ace people should have their own community as well as LGBT people, and as long as LGBT aces exist, there would be an overlap between the two communities, sort of like a Venn Diagram. The intersections of the community should be acknowledged but in the process there can’t be double standards.

And personally, I believe that the LGBT movement is a political alliance to fight against the oppression cishet people enforce upon them, not a fucking Glee club that anyone can join as they please. SGA and trans people formed the community together because of their shared oppression and ace people cannot claim they are oppressed by cishet people the same way LGBT people are until Ace people on large are burned at the stake by the Catholic Church, beaten by police officers, denied basic human rights around the world, and get electrocuted in conversion camps to change them solely because they’re ace.

“We don’t support the people who ruined your life!” But you’re going to continue to say the thoughts that they had, the media that my abusers consumed is ethical and not fucked up at all? You’re going to encourage children that were my age when I was molested to defend said thoughts and media and leave them to be more susceptible to being groomed by people like you?
