On the subject of people with bad opinions about animal welfare, a friend of mine once lived with a burnout couple who had cats. They drove out another potential roommate who had a very well-trained professional herding dog because the dog was crated while the roommate was at work, which this couple thought was unethical.
So they let the dog out of the crate, loose into the house which usually had the front door open, and predictably the dog ran out onto the street. The dog was fine but the owner moved out pretty much immediately, as you would.
Then because that wasn't enough, this couple got a fucking hamster and let it loose in the house because cages are unethical. Loose in a house with two cats.
It went missing immediately, of course, and we all assumed it had been eaten. It wasn't until about a year after they moved out, when the house had been sold and was being cleaned up, that we found its corpse inside the piano, where it had hidden and died of either terror or starvation.
Anyway, moral of the story: don't do that.

A reminder for those of us with cats at Easter that lilies of ANY kind are BAD for cats. Some species such as Calla, Peace and Peruvian do not cause kidney damage or death like Easter and daylilies, but they can still cause irritation and gastrointestinal issues if ingested...
Worth mentioning that ANY TIME you want to bring a new plant into your home, you can google “ASPCA Poison Control [plant name]” and save yourself a lot of guesswork and potential heartache.
