True fact: After Wayward Son, I didn’t think I could process/manage reader response to Any Way the Wind Blows — so I picked about five smart, funny, unhinged people on Tumblr and pretended you were the only readers who existed. (This was during the pandemic when it was still easy to pretend the outside world wasn’t real.) This did *wonders* for my mental health.

“Do people like AWTWB?”

“I have no idea. But my five favorite Tumblr readers are puking hearts, so I’m completely at peace.”

Me in 2021: “They’re saying WHAT about the tail scene on Twitter? Let me consult Tumblr and check on the only five people who exist … Looks like we’re all good 👍.”

“Someone on Instagram says they wanted more ‘Avengers End Game’ and less whatever the fuck happened with Baz and the pajama pants? Just a sec, let me log onto Tumblr, the only reality I currently accept …”

What I’m saying is, you can’t write a book for everyone. You may as well write it for five of your favorite strangers.

to you, it's a shitty sentence. to some random bitch 500 miles away, it's a fire line that'll haunt them for the next 17 years.

you don't know how impactful your writing is because it's been in your brain for far too long now. you've stared at it for hours and repeated "this sucks" over and over again to the point that you killed your capacity to feel anything about your work.

but trust me, once you get your shit out there, someone's gonna go over that paragraph you hate and go "jesus fucking christ" and put the book down to have an existential crisis.

another note: trash now could be treasure for your FUTURE SELF. Do you know how many times I wrote something, thought it was mid to garbage, only to discover it was some of my favorite writing that I had ever done?

When you are a writer, you are not a reader. You see all the threads of fabric holding your story together and not the masterpiece. While you are trying to reword a sentence for a 10th time, someone else read the first try and thought it was fine. I promise you that your writing is better than you think it is, and even if you never grow to like it it will teach you so much. Keep going even when writing feels shitty because you will look back and think you were boo boo the fool for feeling discouraged about a good story.

So if you lived in a society where you had to secure your communication in order to be yourself around others, here are the apps that could help you do that.

Signal let’s you securely text and make phone calls.

Onion Browser allows you to surf the web without leaving a trail.

Duck Duck Go isn’t super secure but it won’t record your searches like Google.

ProtonMail is a email client that lets you email other secure email accounts.

Periscope allows you to stream live video.

Semaphor is there so you can securely make group chat rooms.

American privacy laws allow you to use these all. So that’s pretty cool.

Me as a writer: I feel like I’m repeating myself, I’ve already used that theme, I’ve already written that kink, that other character uses that speech pattern so this one in another fandom can’t, I feel like I’m writing predictable things, is this different enough from that other thing I wrote, are people filling out bingo cards by my work? :sobbing:

Me as a reader: oh hell yeah this hit the spot exactly, I hope this writer has written 20 more just like it

ASiP redux: Gay.

I'm writing Sherlock meta again. Holy shit. Is it 2016?

No, it's 2022, and I just rewatched ASiP for the first time in years -- seriously, years -- and I hadn't seen it in so long that the show seemed fresh to me. And one aspect of it was particularly stunning. I realized that if I had come to this first episode in 2022 with zero knowledge of Sherlock Holmes, I would have come away with the impression that Sherlock is gay. No question.
