My thoughts on being Slytherin:

I just realized that, even though my whole life I thought I was a Hufflepuff, I am a Slytherin. This hit me hard, and not in a good way. I was heartbroken, because I thought I valued family more than power, and love more than deceit and hate. I did so much searching, and desperately tried to find good traits that I identified with. I didn’t find much of anything and was severely disappointed. So I took the core Slytherin traits and really looked into them, and found that there were so many good things!!! Being Slytherin doesn’t have to mean you’re a bad person!!!!!

Anyways, here’s what I found: (I thought the first two didn’t need much help, they are already seen as good traits to have in general) (but if people want me to dive deeper into them I will)

Slytherins are resourceful

Slytherins are often natural leaders

Slytherins are cunning

Cunning:

1. Sly; crafty; clever in surreptitious* behaviour.

2. Skillful, artful.

3. Wrought with, or exhibiting, skill or ingenuity; ingenious.

*Surreptitious:

Stealthy, furtive, well hidden, covert (especially movements).

Slytherins are shrewd

Shrewd:

Being shrewd is apparently being smart, intelligent, clever, witty, etc.

1. Showing clever resourcefulness in practical matters.

2. Artful, tricky or cunning.

3. (informal) streetwise, street-smart.

4. Knowledgeable, intelligent, keen.

5. Nigh accurate. a shrewd guess

6. Severe, intense, hard. a shrewd blow, or assault

7. Sharp, snithy, piercing. a shrewd wind

Slytherins have pride

Pride:

(having a positive sense, often with of or in) A sense of one's own worth, and scorn for what is beneath or unworthy of oneself.

Examples:

He took pride in his work.

He had pride of ownership in his department.

(Good boundaries!!! That’s what I got from this one)

Slytherins are ambitious

Ambition:

1. As definitions go; ambition means a persistent striving and a strong desire to do or achieve something in life.

2. Ambitious people take charge of their destiny and don't expect others to bow down to their needs. They have willpower and determination.

3. Having a desire to achieve a particular goal : ASPIRING

4. Nonetheless, it’s pretty common to think that an ambitious person will tread on others in order to achieve their goals, but this isn’t necessarily true. On the contrary, on many occasions, the desires, goals, and dreams of these people will be oriented to the benefit of other human beings.

5. An ambitious person requires and needs a great cause to guide them through the huge barrier of adversity. Ambition allows them to overcome all kinds of obstacles, continue fighting for their cause, and achieve it.

6. Ambition is related to our feelings, emotions and desires. It is about the energy necessary to chase after your goals, whether in the personal, social or professional field.

7. An ambitious person is one who tries to overcome challenges and put strategies to grow into practice.

8. Being ambitious means cultivating a great desire for transformation and realization of projects. Plans and strategies are created aiming at a certain goal in life, be that personal, as graduating college, or professional, like starting a business.

9. Ambition means having intrinsic motivation — an inner drive that helps you stay focused on achieving your goals.

10. Ambitious people work toward their goals in a passionate and purposeful way. Being persistent: Ambitious people don't easily give up when pursuing their goals

11. The dictionary defines it as: a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.

12. In summary, to be ambitious does not always mean being power hungry or greedy, it means so much more than that, has so much more potential than just that. Ambitious people are dreamers; they have goals and aspirations and will buckle down and work their hardest to make those dreams become reality.

I hope this helps someone who needs to see it!!!

No, but hear me out. Hogwarts Houses as the time of day:

Gryffindor is the sunrise — the oranges and reds smeared across the sky like God ran his hand through a painting of flames. Sunrises are a rebirth of sorts. Light bathes the earth like a second chance. Sunrise is quieter than one might expect. The air is filled with anticipation — the moment before the lion pounces. This is Gryffindor: the moment just before the world is set aflame in oil paints and watercolors.

Ravenclaw is a starry night. Stars evoke thought — scientific, philosophical, astronomical thought. Stars, like knowledge, light the way through the dark. They are the light in the dark. When they cannot be seen, you must search for them — you must reach for a telescope. Ravenclaw is drowning in books like a never ending sea of stars and welcoming the waves. You turn to the sky. They’re beautiful — the stars.

Hufflepuff is the early afternoon sunshine — the light of day warming the earth. It’s the heat of friendship deep in your chest. It’s knowing the earth has shadows and turning your face upwards. The sun warms the skin of your face. The wind blows though your hair. The sun can burn you but you love it anyways. And the sun? It loves you back.

Slytherin is dusk. Snakes are creatures of dusk — of the place where light and dark collide. It’s place of children with an affinity for shadows. Dusk lends itself to shadows. They thrive there. Shadows take over the earth as dusk rises. Dusk itself is a sort of consumption. Like ambition, it will swallow you whole, and you will have no choice but to let it. Slytherin is dusk swallowing the earth.

Hogwarts houses not as your defining trait but the way you survived your childhood — the way you coped with your trauma.

Ravenclaw is the book you buried your nose in as you put one foot in front of the other. They are the children who stayed under the bed with flashlights to catch the monster under the bed. They are the children who came to believe themselves to be monsters. Ravenclaw is a room where you store all the things you try to forget. It’s spending years trying to think your way out of that room. Its knowing the world is a vicious place and finding wonder in it anyways.

Slytherin is keeping your head down and your eyes open. It’s blood in your mouth and venom on your tongue. Slytherin is being sharp and precise and deadly as a snake because there’s no other way to survive. It’s knowing there’s no space for you in this world unless you’re willing to carve it out. They are the children who learned to bide their time. To wait for the perfect moment to strike. To go in for the kill. Slytherin is knowing there is no justice in this world unless you make it.

Gryffindor is a tightly clenched fist to keep your hands from shaking. Its children who used to hide under the bed. Children who swore they’d never let anyone make them afraid again. Gryffindor is raised eyebrows and hackles. It’s children who know fear like a second skin. They wrap themselves in it like a home. Gryffindor is digging your toes into the earth and widening your stance. It’s matching the lions predatory gaze with a challenge of your own and clenching your jaw so it doesn’t tremble.

Hufflepuff is a pair of trembling hands that hold on tight. It’s knowing that caring leads to betrayal and deciding to care anyways. It’s tear stains and heart strings boldly on display. It’s knowing life isn’t fair but choosing to try anyway. They are the children that know the world is cruel. They are the children that love it anyway.

As someone who took etiquette lessons, politeness is an incredibly effective tool for disarming bigots. You can either force them to reconsider their words/actions by directly and calmly confronting their behavior (by using the rules of society in your favor), or you can dip entirely while they appear to be in the wrong.

Both options are great.

Because the thing is, when bigots pick fights, they are 100% counting on you to get louder than them. Or meaner. They want you to react emotionally and provide fodder for their 'You're Too Emotionally Immature To Understand' cannon.

What they aren't expecting you to do is say one of the following phrases in a polite, concerned tone:

  1. Are you okay?
  2. That's not the kind of language I was raised to use with others.
  3. Do you need a moment to think on why that wasn't acceptable?
  4. This is no way to engage in intelligent conversation. Please try that again in a kinder tone if you'd like this to continue. (I really like this one because it lets you turn their public-shame rhetoric around)

For those of you who'd are spiteful and/or dealing with Fundamentalists/Evangelicals/generally shitty Christians:

  1. What's happening in your life to cause you this much anger? I can't imagine hurting so badly that I need to hurt other people.
  2. Who taught you it was acceptable to treat other people this way? Certainly not the Jesus I remember.
  3. Whatever happened to 'judge not lest ye be judged'?
  4. If I talked like that in front of my parents or grandparents I would be ashamed.
  5. I think there's something you need to pray on before we try and have this conversation.

And my all time favorite:

"It sounds to me like there are some seriously dark and angry forces at work in your heart."

(Nothing stops a Christian bigot in their tracks faster than implying the Devil is causing their bigotry. But you MUST be calm, polite, and gentle with your tone and wording. It is absolutely fair to twist the rules and play them at their own game, but you gotta play hard.)

TLDR: It's much faster to use etiquette, politeness, and rhetoric reversal when eviscerating idiots online and in person, because they aren't expecting you to weaponize their behaviors back in their direction. Don't get angry, get spitefully polite! :)

Hi! I love your hogwarts sorting quiz and your explanations of the houses. I was just wondering if you’ve heard of or read the blog sortinghatchats? Your thoughts on the houses seem really similar in some ways. I’m not accusing you of stealing their system or anything like that. I just thought the similarities were interesting, and I was curious.

Hello friend!! Honestly this ask is one of the sweetest things someones said to me because I just looked up @sortinghatchats for the first time in AGES and their system is so well done and well thought out and polished that the idea that mine comes off even remotely similar is very very nice to hear. I think you’re right, we do have a couple similarities in our interpretations of the houses (both of us putting emphasis on certainty for Gryffindors and Slytherins’ small group nature stick out to me) which I think is really awesome because this seems to be made by two friends and my definitions were based of convos with my group chat, so the idea that we both got to similar places with specific details by talking to different self-assigned house members is really cool hehe.

That said, maybe its the through and through Hufflepuff in me but I don’t really subscribe to the idea of a primary/secondary house or a burnt house personally, and we seem to disagree in some of the core values that puts one person in one place or the other (with their system saying Hufflepuff and Ravenclaws are the external houses whereas I see that as Ravenclaw Gryffindor, and their system saying Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are the more idealist houses where for me thats Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs). I think a lot of the similarities probably come from the fact we both take a lot of personality quizzes and are obviously fascinated by the concept, so you can see a lot of influences of the terminology most popular personality quizzes use, although we’re very different in our details about what makes one house one or the other. That said if you enjoyed my quiz their system is awesome, super polished and incredibly well thought out and I would highly recommend taking their quiz and reading more about their system because I’m sure you would love it!

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing your thoughts with me! It was fun to take a look at their system again, which I got a Hufflepuff primary and secondary for if you’re curious c: Hope you have a wonderful day anon!

Your wonderful quiz about Harry Potter brought me to this blog! I love your taste in music & literature!! Can you recommend me some of your favorite poets please?

Hello friend!  Yes, I can! I’m honestly not as well read as I would like to be, in poets at the very least, but if anyone wants my Highly Cultivated best childrens/middle reader book recommendations I’m afraid that’s more of my expertise c: Again, If you want to check out @riperain and her amazing words tag,  I would highly recommend, as she has excellent taste and the quotes often lead back to really spectacular authors. Personally, I really enjoy Allen Ginsberg, Ocean Vuong, Mary Oliver, Hafez (I used the Daniel Ladinsky english translations), Jenny Slate, yes Richard Siken I’m Gay, Amber Sparks, Anne Carson, Hieu Minh Nguyen, dunno if it counts but every song by Tank and the Bangas. I have a really loose definition of what a poet is so I’m gonna throw on here Joseph Fink, Markus Zusak, Mark Helprin, Erin Morgenstern, Julien Baker, Ryn Weaver, and hardcore Milo/Scallops hotel and whatever the fuck Leonard Cohen was up to. Actually, if y’all have poet/poetry recommendations for ME that would be AMAZING! I hope this gives you some things to look into c: Thank you for being so kind and I hope you enjoy c:

It is essential that you reckon with the antisemitism of Hogwarts Legacy. It is essential that you reckon with the fact that whether or not you believe yourself to be antisemitic, or the purchasing of the game to be antisemitic, the game itself is comprised of so many antisemitic dogwhistles that it is the literal plot. If you are unfamiliar with the historical use of these goblin-like antisemitic caricatures and the real world affects of such portrayals, I sincerely wish you take the time to familiarize yourself. If you are unaware of which specific tropes the game is using, I beg you to familiarize yourself. If you are aware of the use of goblin cabals, blood libel, explicit references to the real world 1612 Fettmilch rebellion and following pogrom, of the use of a shofar as one of the goblin artifacts, and you still choose to support this game and this franchise, know that this is not accidental. Troy Leavitt, the previous lead developer of the game is an active alt-right YouTuber who is very vocal about his antisemitic, misogynist, and racist beliefs. Despite his resignation due to family matters and pushback over his channel, he was still integral to game development. He was not asked to leave by WB. WB has stated that they had no problem with his channel. This is not to say that Leavitt is the sole cause of the beliefs that permeate the entirety of this game. In fact, it is to say the opposite. This is to say that this game was created by a development team that has proven itself willing or desireous of giving these beliefs a platform. This game is not an accident. Its hate is not a coincidence.

I understand that the Harry Potter franchise holds a special place in your heart for a lot of you. However, you are responsible for challenging your personal comfort when it comes at the expense of harm to others. This game is a piece of propaganda. This franchise has long since abandoned any ability or intent to redeem itself from the harm and hate that it continuously spews. You are not a child anymore. To claim ignorance or to disregard these facts as not having an affect on you or the real world is willful and has consequences. Reckon with that. Do not hide behind escapism as an excuse to be an idle participant in the world you live in, to be an active participant in fostering fear and violence towards others. You have responsibility here. You wanted a better, more magical world. Choose to be better in this one.

My cats have this meow that means "please come with me to fix this" after which they'll lead me to the problem in question, usually a empty (or 'empty') food bowl or a closed door they want open. They look at the 'problem', they look back at me, clear message.

What fascinates me is how this illustrates what they percieve as being in the realm of my 'power.' I control the food, I control the door, sure, but my cats love to sit on the balcony in the sun, and it has happened plenty of times that on a rainy day they come get me, go to the balcony and show me... the rain. "Please fix this" they say. "Please get rid of the wet"

"Silly kitty," I say, "I can't control the rain." I then walk into the shower and turn on the rain.

My cat absolutely does this. What’s more, she has learned that she can demand that one human fix the behavior of another human.

I was in the bathroom one day. The door was closed, which is of course a Crime Against Felinity. The cat had been complaining about this for several minutes. I told her I would be out in a few.

I then heard the “follow me” meow from down the hall, and my husband saying “what?”

The next thing I heard was my husband’s voice at the bathroom door. “The cat just led me right here, and now she’s looking at me like, ‘Here. You talk to her. She seems to listen to you.’”

Yes. My cat has learned to speak to the manager.

I love it when people use "shrimp" to mean "beyond the human range". like "shrimp colors" but applied to other things. "shrimp emotions" "shrimp sounds" "shrimp morality", as if shrimp are living some kind of transcendent existence that humans can never comprehend
