Landmarks and sacred sites are being destroyed and blown up for mining, in New South Wales. Burial sites where the ancestors of the aboriginal people are buried, “you don’t go blowing up European burial sites so why do they get to do it to ours” said a Dolly Talbot a Gomeroi woman.

The environmental minister Susan Ley said “the economic benefits outweighed the loss of heritage value”

This is the systematic oppression of Indigenous Australians.

Resources for Mending Clothes

We toss out over 80 pounds of textiles each year. These textiles are often made of plastic materials (polyester, nylon), made in unethical conditions, dyed with harsh dyes that often get put into the rivers, etc. Even a single cotton shirt releases carbon emissions and uses tons of water.

So the best thing to prevent the unsustainable growth of the fashion industry is to make sure that your clothing lasts as long as possible. To do so, mending clothing is a must. So here are some resources to help you learn how to do various things, such as sewing a button, to tailoring clothes, or even upcycling old clothing into new styles.

These are just a few of the things that you can do in order to make sure that your clothing lasts for a long time. Nobody wants to keep buying new clothing, as it is expensive and wasteful.

So making alterations to your clothing, or fixing small holes hen you see them can be hugely beneficial to your wallet, to garment workers, and to the environment in the long term.

a plain white image, with two lines of text reading ““easier said than done”” in dark grey, and “reminders about helping someone through a particularly depressed time or a panic attack” in a horizontal gradient of light blue, pink, and green

A lot of things, especially when it comes to recovery, are easier said than done. That thought alone can discourage those who are struggling into not trying at all. However, a better way to look at the phrase “easier said than done”, is that being able to say those things is a very good start on the journey towards getting it done. This small series of resources is going to explore that idea.

Specifically helping someone through a particularly depressed time or a panic attack can be difficult, especially if you have not experienced those things yourself. These are some very general and simple tips that may be able to help you, help others.

  • don’t just tell someone to ‘not worry about it’ or to ‘cheer up’
  • it may be meant in good spirits, but if the person could do those things right now, they most certainly would. in a hard time, they don’t need to be reminded of how simple it should be – that could lead to their mental health getting worse instead of better.
  • take them slowly through a simple breathing exercise (written exercise) / (breathing along with a gif), or ask them to count down from 100 with you
  • remind them that you’re here to help, and that you care
  • make sure that they are comfortable in the place that they are right now – if not, try your best to get them into a position or a place that they are
  • listen to what they have to say, and reassure them that things are going to be okay
  • please be patient – alongside listening, this is the most important thing that you can do
  • please understand that they might not want to talk right now, and might rather have some space to calm down on their own – in those times, just remind them that you are there for them, and remember to check in on them to see if they are okay later
  • think about the things that make the person you care for happy – or maybe get them to list them themselves
  • let them just let it all out, and remind them that it’s completely okay for them to cry
  • during a panic attack or depressive episode, someone can experience a lot of different emotions – including irritability – it may not just be crying or sadness; please try your best to not let that frustrate you, or to not respond in the same way to them
  • keep a calm and caring tone of voice
  • ask the person if they have experienced a panic attack before, and what they think might help them
  • reassure them that this specific attack or time will go away, and things will be okay
  • understand that these depressed times or panic attacks can come at any moment, and for sometimes no reason at all
  • make sure to remind the person that they are not a burden, and that you want to help them

I understand that the things above are “easier said than done”, but it is still important to say them, because that’s a start.

If you have any tips or reminders you would like to share about helping someone through a particularly depressed time or a panic attack, feel free to share them in your reblogs or replies. Thank you so much to one of the network’s community members for suggesting this easier said than done topic.

I hope this could help, and I hope you have a lovely day today. :)

alternatives to self harm

first, identify why self harm helps. is it the expression? the energy? the violence? the tactile effect? figure it out, and act accordingly in a safer manner.

second, separate yourself from your trigger. then know that you are not your urge to self harm. call it your blurry face, call it an urge. create distance between your identity as a person and the thoughts that occur to your person.

stewing and expressing // talk to a friend. write about it. make art. yell to no one. listen to music. make a playlist. CRY. draw on your skin. workout till you burn and sweat.

expelling energy // do crunches. do yoga. go to the gym. go for a walk. or run. take up lifting. or kickboxing. throw ice. dance. shake out your hands. jumping jacks. clean something difficult to clean.

tactiles // use a mala bracelet or necklace. hold ice. peel an orange (aroma benefit). peel a frozen orange. feel a sweater. pet a dog. put on a tactile temporary tattoo. draw simple or complex patterns. make a friendship bracelet. embroider.

distraction // get out into public. organize/clean- it’s productive too. watch something. watch with someone on rabbit. talk to someone. read. move around. play with a pet. make a playlist. slowly focus on 5 examples within your sight for all 5 senses. create something.

destruction // peel an orange. throw ice in a bathtub. rip paper. go boxing. scribble. bounce a ball.

find peace // mindfully make a cup of tea. take photos. smell lavender, mint, or citrus. use a light box. cuddle. take a shower. stretch. do a body scan!! pay attention to your body movements during breathing. feel your heartbeat at every pulse point.

take your anxiety medication. use aromatherapy. take an herbal relaxer chewy or pill (like gaba, a supplement)

some don’t’s //  1) tweeting rarely ever get the response you’ll want. if you have a close friend, instead just reach out to Someone specifically. 2) cut caffeine and any food allergy like gluten that may impact mood. 3) substances include withdrawal. avoid them.

two notes // 1) i hesitate to mention snapping a rubber band on your wrist as it can result in bruising which can lead to more self harm 2) self harm doesn’t have to be physical. substance abuse, sex, food may be included. i’m specifically addressing physical, but use if it helps.

stay strong. stay safe. give yourself grace.

Tried immediately after reading this: confirmed to be delicious.

I know it sounds kind of weird, but it’s mild and sweet and just the right temperature for immediate consumption in any weather. Definitely give it a try!

This is my favorite “calm down” drink after I have a break down

Calories:

2 teaspoons of honey: 50

Pinch of cinnamon: 0

½ cup of milk: Varies

———½ cup of Milk———

Cashew: 12.5 *

Almond: 15 *

Coconut: 22.5 *

Skim: 45

Whole: 51.5

2%: 65

Soy: 65.5 *

———————-

*Unsweetened

I made some today, and, guys, IT’S SO DELICIOUS!!! A favorite recipe right here

Trying this when I get home.

I don’t like tea or milk, but I do swear by this. It is like a hug in a mug, I make it when I feel anxious at night or if I can’t sleep. When I first made this, I made it for my family, and we all fell asleep within like 10 minutes lol

ways to start feeling again

  • sit in the sun without anything to do, feel the heat of the rays hit your skin, realize that this sunlight has travelled a very long way to reach you
  • walk around barefoot and try to feel as much of the ground under your feet as you can, notice every rock and blade of grass
  • sit quietly for a while and notice the touch of breath in your nostrils, feel how the air gets cooler as you inhale and warmer as you exhale
  • drive around aimlessly and blast some of your favorite songs, scream/sing along to them and feel the vibrations of your favorite lyrics as they change the air in your throat and around you, feel that the music is healing you from the inside out
  • stay away from alcohol or drugs for a few days, try to be as aware and present as you can in every moment, stop trying to numb or dull your senses
  • eat a few meals without any distractions, notice every bite and taste every flavor that covers your tongue, be grateful for it all
  • look up at the stars and the moon, understand how small we all are and how immense the universe is, realize what a miracle everything is, let your heart swell with amazement and admiration for life itself

ok this is actually cool bc doing all of this is a technique called “mindful thinking” that is extremely useful for people with anxiety disorders and dissociation disorders and stuff!

It’s been a while since I’ve made a post, and I figured that these tips might be extra helpful with exam season approaching. As someone who struggles a lot with procrastination, I do everything I can to fight the urge to put assignments off until the last minute (even though I’m not always successful).

As always, good luck! (ᵔᴥᵔ)

no one talks about how rick riordan literally scammed disney

dead ass pjo was that seemingly “normal” kids fantasy series with a seemingly white straight kid saving the world and it’s a fucking success. percy jackson? iconic! ppl fucking love percy and his character and then hoo comes out? everyone is pumped bc everyone is in love with that world. the first book? two main bad ass poc characters. the second book? two more bad ass poc characters! the fourth book and there’s literally a gay character and it’s not like disney could say no. hoo ends and then there’s magnus chase and ppl are fucking pumped bc that’s annabeth chase’s cousin and in the first book there’s a muslim girl and by the second book there’s a transgender and genderfluid character. trials of apollo? a main gay couple in a happy relationship and a fucking bi character. could disney say no? no. literal 10 year olds are reading books with heaps of representation all published by disney. rick riordan played the game. you step in thinking ur just gonna get white cishets and you walk out surrounded by different cultures and rainbows.

tldr; rick started out with the basic pasty white and straight series which got hella successful and used his success to pusblish more books and allow only one (1) cishet and only one (1) white

i doubt he planned it but deadass it would be so funny if that’s what happened

I saw him speak on /writing in the UK right before (or early in on when) his series hit it big. Planned. Definitely planned.

Thousand percent planned. Also Percy? Has a learning disability. RR’s son inspired him to write bc he is ADHD and dyslexic. This was all planned. He is all about inclusivity and representation.

He also makes his books incredibly funny, which is rather rare for YA and makes them more accessible to kids who don’t really like to read. In addition to having loads of POV character who have trouble reading themselves.

For those who’ve been living under a YA rock, this is Rick Riordan:

(this was the gay character in the second series)

(and the trans character in a later series)

Let’s not forget that he has an interest in the mythologies of other countries, but instead of writing them himself promotes other writers through his “Rick Riordan Presents” publishing imprint to do so!

Riordan is what JK Rowling wanted to be

I couldn’t finish trials of Apollo because of how he made a previously straight character gay

Tell me one, ONE piece of evidence in the books that nico was previously straight. @ender-w
