So I've been debating deleting all my blogs...

So here’s the update on my train of thought.

I’m thinking I’m going to delete them one at a time. Starting with the ones I never use. I don’t know if I’ll delete this yet or not… Maybe…. what’s you opinion? I’ve been debating this for a while and I can’t come to a full decision. Of course, when I delete it, I’m going to make a brand new one. Because we all know you can’t leave Tumblr. Once you’re here, you’re trapped.

One of my main reasons is that this isn’t my main blog. My main blog is never used and it’s just a hassle. This is my secondary that I use as a primary. But anyway...

If you're a writer and you see this post, stop what you're doing.

WHENEVER YOU SEE THIS POST ON YOUR DASH, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WRITE ONE SENTENCE FOR YOUR CURRENT PROJECT.

Just one sentence. Stop blogging for one minute and write a single sentence. It could be dialogue, it could be a nice description of scenery, it could be a metaphor, I don’t care. The point is, do it. Then, when you finish, you can get back to blogging.

If this gets viral, you might just have your novel finished by next Tuesday.

Goddamn it, it’s back.

If it stays back, I might manage to finish a third story this year. Jesus.

I swear, this is now my only writing motivation.

BACK AGAIN??? Sigh.

Okay, sorry if anyone gets sick of this, but it’s the best way for me to get myself to write.

I saw a post that was like “mutuals =/= friends” like whoa okay I always thought of mutuals as low key friends but that’s fine let’s make people more insecure of their relationships than they already are

Bruhs, if we are mutuals you are 100% at least low-key level friend to me.

Hello! News from moi!

I'm starting a new Hamilton blog! It's called my-dear-hammy if you want to follow it! I'm going to post animation of the musical if enough people like it, I'll also do requests for drawing characters! I'll also post random facts from that era. So if you want any of that type of content, follow! I'm also a writer, so I'll do some writing requests too if you really want it!

oh excuse me but someone on tumblr just asserted that the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings was definitely rape.

how do you know?

do you have definite concrete proof?

no?

then court is adjourned

She was a 14 or so year old girl who he owned.  That alone really makes it impossible to say that there were no issues of consent in the relationship.

do people still really believe they were in love

no seriously

seriously?

The whole situation really is shrouded in mystery; we can’t even say with absolute certainty that this actually happened at all (which I still hope is the case).  It is theoretically possible that they were in love and living as common law husband and wife (which I would also hope would be the case)…

But in a situation with as many issues as this, that really isn’t the first possibility one should leap to.  This is a man sleeping with a young, vulnerable woman who he owned in a world where whites believed that he could do whatever he wanted to her. Jefferson obviously didn’t have the temperament of a violent, aggressive rapist, and he wouldn’t consciously force a woman to sleep with him, but all those circumstances combine to create a really bad situation for poor Sally.

I mean…supposedly she came back from France (instead of staying there where she was free) to be a slave at Monticello because Jefferson promised to free her children. Was she just sleeping with him in the hopes that her children would be the beneficiaries?  How incredibly messed up is that?

Also, Jefferson was a very refined man. I have a hard time believing a man who put such value on education, gentility, the arts, etc. would have a genuine personal attraction to an uneducated woman who performed housework. I mean, it’s certainly not impossible, but that again points to a sexual relationship of convenience rather than love.

I wish, or hope, that the whole thing either never happened, or they lived in a mutually loving relationship throughout their lives, though I think both of those things are doubtful.  And I don’t think Jefferson was a fundamentally immoral man or intentionally cruel. He probably did care about Sally Hemings to some degree.

But I do think that turning the Jefferson-Hemings relationship into some kind of perfect inter-racial romance, or treating it as a ‘sex-scandal’ while ignoring the power imbalances in the relationship is really messed up.

Okay, so I’ve done some research on this, not much, but I plan to do more, that being said, this is what I know.

Thomas Jefferson had a wife who died young.mhe absolutely cherished her loved her deeply. He was heart broken and never remarried. He was a quiet, reserved man that let people have their own opinions without trying to silence them at all. He believed that people were capable of making their own decisions and what to believe. In fact, one morning, as he took he daily, solitary ride, he came across a man that reads the newspaper, one that slanders jefferson to the point that you would not believe. He immediately began talking about how awful president jefferson was. Jefferson, knowing what was happening, smiled and asked the man if he would say the same thing to the president himself if the president was willing to meet with him. The man agreed and that evening, went to the presidential mansion, met jefferson and realized his mistake. In fact, this happened to many people in different ways. They expected some ruff, load guy with no manners, but instead met one of the most polite, gentlemen like person. I say this to give an example of lying newspapers.

Now, there was a news paper writer that strongly believed in the, I don’t have to prove it may just print it. So, he made up several insane stories all the time, not just about jefferson. On of these stories was about the whole Sally affair.

Before I dive into that, I must point out that jefferson hated slavery. Yes, he did have slaves, but he hated having them as slaves, but It was at the time, pretty much impossible to run a plantation without slaves, especially in that market and era. He fought for the freedom of slaves regularly and more vigorously than hamilton. In fact, I believe he was one of the founding fathers that fought the hardest. He regularly freed his slaves, after providing them with an education and a trade so they could survive in the world without starving to death. And when slaves ran away, he put forth no effort to hunt them down. And when slaves did something terrible or in the time, would normally warrant a lashing, ( which I would never agree with as I hate slavery and punishing thereof) he would simply take them aside, talk to them a bit and send them on their way. Never a whip or other punishment in sight.

Sally was a slave in his houshold, however, Thomas rarely ever saw her. They almost never ran into each other. Jefferson was always either working, in his chambers, inspecting his crops, or on a ride. They hardly ever saw each other. However, thomas’ brother was staying at Monticello at the time. His brother was much different that Tommy J. No where near as kind, understanding, or gentleman like. And he was notorious for such affairs as the Sally affair. If anyone in the jefferson household was doing such a thing, it would be the brother. Thomas did not approve of his brother and think he took steps to intervene in this, but it’s can’t remember so I must dedicate more time to this.

So all in all, Thomas Jefferson never touched Sally or any other slave.

( I apologize for misspellings, I’m on mobile and on a device that likes to mess with my words. And the keyboard is the size of a cracker)

Yours truly, a history nerd. Sorry that was so long, this is just a subject I see everywhere and get annoyed because I hate seeing a good person slandered for something that he didn’t do.

I really fucking hope this is true

@capandbuck I truly believe this is true. I've read an entire biography on the man just for fun, and I plan to read more. The one I read that I got this from was "the real Thomas Jefferson " I believe that was what it was called. Anyway, we you won't believe how compassionate this guy was. He was rich, but put himself so far into debt helping people, that he almost had to cell monticello, in fact, he would have if he hadn't died. His family had to sell it off for him afterward. I could go on. He didn't want the presidency, he didn't campaign, he didn't promote himself. He used his own money for several official happening that Congress was technically was supposed to cover. He fed countless people. He hardly ever spoke in Congress and earned the nickname, the silent congressman. He shared his opinion by writing. He was super nice and loved to learn, he was considered the Leonardo de Vinci of that era, he knew how to do so many things, countless things, just because he loved to learn. You can thank him for the swivel chair. He never accepted money for his inventions, he opened at least one college, he did countless things that hardly anyone remembers him for. His entire political career happened because people volunteered him without his knowing. That literally how he became a candidate for president. The party just straight up went, yeah jefferson is our Candidate. He strongly believed in the Constitution, he practically wrote it, because while he was in France he constantly helped Madison and gave him constant opinions and ways to set it up. Whereas hamilton went to the constitutional convintion, saw a Republican monarch wasn't going happen, made a speech about it, and left. He only returned at the very end, in fact, at one point he said the constitution was a shrilly shally thing of milk and water. He hated the constitution and only supported it because it was better than the articles of confederation. Hamilton fought against slavery but quickly gave up whereas jefferson fought constantly at every opportunity and even predicted the civil war if something wasn't done about it.
