the body positivity movement needs to start moving hard into including disabled bodies and this is what I mean by that. yes, it was a good step forward to change the rhetoric from “your body is a good body if it meets these arbitrary aesthetic standards” to “your body is a good body because it completes these tasks for you” (ie: walking, eating, laughing, hugging, etc.) but that rhetoric is still not fully body positive, because it excludes bodies that do not do these things. the same as saying how we need to “focus on healthy bodies not skinny bodies” sounds good at first, but it completely misses the point that unhealthy bodies deserve to be appreciated too. disabled bodies are still beautiful and still fundamentally good, not because “your body is kind to you so you should be kind to your body”- because not everyone’s body is kind to them. but all bodies are still good bodies because they are what houses your soul. your body is what allows you to exist and live your life in whatever way you live it, and for that reason, it is a good and beautiful body. your body is what your loved ones see when they look at you and the love they feel for it as an extension of you makes it a good and beautiful body. your body doesn’t have to look a certain way or behave a certain way to be good. it is good just for being here.

please note there is a difference between “fake” and “not real”. wrestling is fake in the sense that it is typically staged, but we can all agree that the concept and act of wrestling exists. football is not real in the sense that it is not a thing that exists in our world

If y'all wanna know how Canada is doing with the apocalyptic heatwave, an entire town spontaneously combusted the other day and is now Gone

This sounds exaggerated but Lytton B.C. is now uninhabitable and missing a number of residents. Please y'all pay attention and prepare for evacaution warnings

Here we go, a more useful bunch of information than “GO GET A RESPIRATOR AND PANIC WITH ME”.  I appreciate this person so much.

I hope this information gets around as much as the post I made about cold weather dressing - this is just as important, just in the other direction.

I was guilty of not having enough carriers for all of my animals - I’ve since rectified that.

I also ordered respirators today.  They aren’t that expensive!  You can get them on the Evil Site of Evil for ~20 and up.  Make sure they either come with the filter pads, or you get some.  It’s not always standard.

The following links were provided in subsequent posts:

Alix Powell @thatpowellgirl Y’all remember last year‘s wildfires? @MinkasaurusRex [hey that’s me!] brought to my attention that is wildfire season again, and I think that calls for a safety thread. These graphics showcase last yeardrought drought versus this years drought. This year has the potential to be much, much worse.

I’ll put the rest in the Read More.

Yup. Just gonna keep doing it. It’s going to be important, very very soon.

Fun update!

Image: Western Drought map, June 2021 showing the dramatic increase over last year.

Drought can make it *much* more likely to have fires, and if you recall last year, it was pretty shit.

Prepare yourselves, please.

Hey, if you're in Washington state (and probably other areas of the west end of the USA, too) you should know that next weekend is supposed to be extremely hot:

"Washington Emergency Management Division posted a 📷local alert for the state of Washington. 8h ·

We are about to see some very hot temperatures across the state. The National Weather Service in Seattle is tracking different models that show it could get anywhere from 90 degrees to 105 degrees at SeaTac this weekend. Find your local forecast at https://www.weather.gov/ Regardless of the exact temperature, it's going to be a hot one. The Weather Office in Spokane also says to expect triple digit temperatures in Eastern Washington and provides more details here: https://inlandnorthwestweather.blogspot.com/ Steps you can take NOW to try and keep your home cool. Do not rely on only a fan as your primary cooling device. Take other steps: > Cover windows with drapes or shades. > Weather-strip doors and windows. > Use window reflectors such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard to reflect heat back outside. > Add insulation to keep the heat out. > Learn to recognize the signs of heat illness. For more information visit: www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html > Find places with air conditioning. Libraries, shopping malls, and community centers can be a cool place to beat the heat. Stay informed and check with local authorities about possible closures prior to going to cooling centers. "

Heat kills, especially in areas not used to really hot weather. Where I live, in western Washington, it is currently forecasted to get up to 103f- most people here do not have air conditioning. Many people do not know how to live with extreme heat- because getting up to 101f is a rare event, much remarked upon.

If you are somewhere that will be experiencing a heatwave, please check in and help with any one you know who maybe at greater risk of death- elderly folks, disabled folks, unhoused folks, etc. Heat, especially in areas unused to it, can kill. I remember a heatwave in the U.K. that killed the elderly, and lots of other people too. Let's try to make that not happen here.

Please do what you can to prepare now. The quote above has some good ideas, and I'll be posting what we're doing tomorrow (hopefully) (I'm thinking space blankets blocking windows, weather stripping the doors, opening the windows at night and closing them before it warms up, etc). Look up ways to cool yourself that are cheap and easy. If it's this hot in June, how hot will it be in July? How many wildfires are going to start this weekend?

With 4th of July only a week away or so, please PLEASE don't be tempted to set off fireworks. We all have a very mild dry winter, things are dry, and they'll be even drier by the time the 4th hits. If camping or celebrating, please be extremely careful with BBQ, fire pits and camp fires. Make sure the ground around any source of fire is well watered, have a bucket with water handy, and if you can, maybe just skip the fire this year. Also remember to always check and see if there is a current fire ban for your area.

Let's be real - We've all been coopt up for the past year, and the last thing we all need is to be stuck indoors due to wildfires making the air outside unsafe to breath. We're looking at a long, hot dry summer. Be smart, be safe.

For real- much of the western part of the U.S. is ridiculously dry. Here's a comparison with last year at about the same time of year:

Remember all the wildfires and all the smoke and the post-apocalyptic photos from last year? That's the map on the left.

It's a tinderbox out there.

We're already having wildfires, and we don't need more human ignition sources.

If you live in/near an effected area, please be prepared. Have an emergency kit, and a plan for what you're going to do when the air quality plummets or fires are near your home.

Forecast now for western Washington (in my region) is now 109 for the weekend 6/26-6/28, which is obscene and unheard of for this side of the state. Portland, OR is forecasting 114 and much like here, air conditioning is not the standard for home building.

Last year wasn't this hot, and yet there was still a day in September 2020 that more of Washington burned in 24 hours than in all of 2019. Be fucking careful with your flames.

Friendly reminder that tomorrow is the first day of pride month and if I see any biphobia, I will throw hands

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • saying that bisexuality excludes trans/nonbinary people (it doesn't)
  • saying that bisexuality is too binary (it isn't)
  • saying that bisexuality is outdated (again, it isn't)
  • saying/implying that bisexuals only care about gender rather than personality (which is gross and untrue)
  • derailing conversations on biphobia and its effects
  • excluding bisexuals from mlm and wlw spaces/discussions
  • speaking over bisexuals in conversations on the issues we face
  • refusing to listen to bisexuals if we say something is biphobic
  • ignoring bisexual history and activism
  • ignoring the present contributions of bisexuals to LGBTQ culture
  • making demeaning jokes about bisexuals or jokes that rely on negative stereotypes
  • stereotyping bisexuals in general
  • viewing bisexuals as 'half-straight'/'lesser' members of the LGBTQ community
  • and finally, speaking over bisexuals about the very definition of bisexuality
  • yes this includes saying things like 'that sounds more like [other sexuality]' or 'if you define your attraction that way you're [other sexuality] instead' in response to a bisexual person describing how they define their orientation for themself

a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:

  • pretending to gag at asian food
  • pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
  • excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
  • not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person's ethnic name correctly, or asking, "can i call you by something else?"
  • adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
  • using the words "oriental" and "exotic" to describe asian people, particular asian women
  • ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, *edit* west asians, and central asians
  • making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
  • treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
  • co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history
