Han x Leia Holiday Exchange 2023: The Reveal (Part 1)

The collection for the 2023 Han x Leia Holiday Exchange has now been revealed! 💞

You can check out all the fics that have been submitted so far at the AO3 collection HERE. As we mentioned earlier, you should have received an email with a direct link to your gift. If you haven't, it's because we're still waiting on a couple of submissions - please be patient as we wait for folks to add the last finishing touches to your gift!

Remember to leave kudos and, if possible, a comment to show our authors some love! And especially leave a nice comment thanking your own mystery author 😉

Authors are still anonymous for a few more weeks, so remember to please keep your identity a secret and avoid sharing your fic anywhere else just yet! We will reveal the authors and share a masterlist of all the fics for this year’s exchange later in the month.

Now go enjoy all these wonderful gifts, and have fun trying to guess at our writers!

Thank you again to all our writers for the 2023 HanLeia Holiday Exchange! We’ll be revealing the collection — with author names still anonymous — later on today. Once your gift has been posted, you should receive an email notification from Ao3.

We do have a few writers who needed a brief extension to get their fic fully ready for unfreezing, but we should be getting most of those in the next day or so. So if you don't get an email and you’re not seeing your gift yet, please don’t fret; it’s on the way. One of the mods will reach out to you to give you an ETA!

It's the deadline!

Submissions for the Han/Leia Holiday Exchange 2023 are due today, January 15! 🎉

Remember that you have until midnight of wherever you are in the world (or Tuesday 16, at 11:59pm UTC-12) to post your fic (How? Go to the “My Assignments” tab on your Ao3 profile, find your assignment for this exchange and click “Fulfill”. By default, your work will remain anonymous).

🔹️If you’ve already submitted your fic or are confident you will do so at some point today: yay, you did good! You may take a Wookiee cookie.

🔹️If you think you’ll be a couple of hours late: that’s totally fine, but please let a mod know, just so we don’t worry about you.

🔹️If you’re worried about not being able to make it and could use a couple of days to wrap everything up: mods can grant wishes - please summon a mod asap!

🔹️If you’re seriously thinking about dropping out: please reach out to a mod asap! We will not judge you, but we need to know so we can find a pinch hitter for your recipient.

Works will be revealed anonymously starting Tuesday 16 - please don’t share your fics anywhere else until authors are revealed! Also, please be careful not to accidentally give yourself away in the Author’s Notes (for example, by referencing past works of yours).

You should be all good if you do it through your assignment for the exchange on AO3 — the exchange is structured so that folks submit their assignments, but neither the fics nor the authors will show up on AO3 until the mods for the exchange reveal them. Authors are submitting their assignments today (or for a few folks, after a brief extension). As they’re submitted, the mods will be checking over them to make sure everything’s been properly tagged and that hopefully someone has not accidentally given themselves away in their author’s notes or anything. Assuming everything’s in order, they get approved for the collection. Then sometime tomorrow, the mods will reveal the exchange fic collection — but not the authors, so the fics will be up but authors will all appear as anonymous. (You will get to see the giftee, however!) After about a week (but definitely by January 31), authors will be revealed.

So the short version of this long answer is that all you need to do to keep it anonymous is submit your fic via the assignment you were given on AO3.

As a reminder, to submit your fic, go to “My Assignments” in AO3, and under the HanLeia Exchange 2022 event you’ll see a button that says “Fulfill” — click that and then it will take you to a screen that is basically the same as if you were posting a regular fic to AO3, only it will be directly connected to your assignment for the exchange.

One week left before the deadline!

Hello, writers! This post is just to remind you that the posting deadline is exactly in one week, Monday 15.

We’re glad to report that all of you have replied to our check-ins and kept us updated - good job! We hope all of you are doing great and not feeling as out of sorts as Leia 😉

Now, a few more things to keep in mind:

  • The Ao3 collection is now open! If you finished early and are feeling good about your fic, you can go ahead and post it by going to the “My Assignments” tab in your Ao3 account and clicking “Fulfill”.
  • Your fic won't be visible in the collection or anywhere else until the deadline.
  • The posting date your fic will show up as will be the date you posted it on, not the date it will be made visible on. This means that your fic could potentially get buried under newer works in the Search by the time it’s set to visible. If this is something that worries you, you should be able to fix this by choosing a different posting date set in the future.
  • Today is also the deadline to request a beta reader from us! If you desperately need us to help later on, we’re not likely to turn you away—just keep in mind that folks might not be available on short notice.
  • If you're worried about making the deadline, please talk to us asap!

2023 HanLeia Holiday Exchange - Half-Point Check-ins

Hey, how’re we doing?

It’s just about the halfway point in our writing time for this year’s exchange! Hopefully you’re doing a little better than Han, Chewie, and Luke were at this point (although you will remember that they and our beloved Huttslayer did end up coming out on top at the end of this).

In the next couple of days, you’ll be hearing from one of the exchange mods to check in and see how things are going. Please be sure to keep an eye on (and respond to) your Tumblr messages. Whether you’re close to done, still thinking through ideas, or somewhere in between, it’s all good! Just let us know. We still have time until fics are due (January 15, 2024).

Your check-in is also a great time to let us know…

  • Any questions or challenges that have come up as you’re writing for your giftee
  • If you’d like help from a beta reader, a cheerleader, or just someone else to bounce ideas around as you’re writing your fic
  • If you’d be willing to help out as a beta or cheerleader for other writers in need
  • Anything else related to the exchange!

A few reminders…

Writers, have you reached out to your giftee yet? If not, be sure to send them an anonymous ask on Tumblr as soon as possible, but definitely by the end of the day Saturday, December 16.

Exchange participants, be sure your Tumblr is set up to accept anonymous asks, and be sure to check your inbox for a message and post your response! If your writer hasn’t sent you an ask by Sunday morning, please reach out to one of the mods and we’ll remind them.

Anonymous asks are a great way to find out more about your giftee’s likes and preferences, bounce story ideas off of them, or just say hi! And they’re an especially fun part of the exchange.

If you’d like a common tag to use when posting things about the exchange, you can use #hanleiaholidayexchange2023 — that’s the tag we’re using for the blog, and it’s a great way to find other HanLeia fans who are posting about the exchange.

Having trouble reaching out to your giftee? Have another problem, or a question? Looking for a beta reader, a cheerleader, or someone besides your giftee to bounce ideas around? Contact one of the mods ( @hanorganaas @lajulie24 @otterandterrier ) and we’ll be happy to help.

We employed our best matching magic and possibly also the Force, and found what we hope will be a great match for each of our participants. And now through the power of AO3, you should have received your assignment for the exchange!

So what’s next?

  1. Find your assignment. Assignments went out to the email address you use for your AO3 account. (Be sure to check junk or bulk mail boxes if it didn’t land in your inbox.) You can also log onto AO3 and find your assignment in your dashboard under “Assignments.” If for some reason you did not receive your assignment, please contact one of the mods.
  2. Make sure you're Tumblr-ready for the exchange. Make sure the Tumblr used in your sign-up is set up to receive anonymous messages, and that you check that Tumblr account regularly (at least every couple of days) during the exchange to respond to messages from your writer or from the mods, as this will be the primary way folks will get in touch with you about exchange business. Plus, it can be a fun way to share the excitement with other participants!
  3. Say hello (secretly!!) to your giftee. Within the next couple of days, send an anonymous message to your recipient's Tumblr Ask box to say hello. This is a great opportunity to ask your giftee questions about their preferences or prompts, to bounce story ideas off of them, or just to greet them and say that you're excited to be working on their gift. And by no means do you have to limit yourself to one message — a little back-and-forth with your giftee can build excitement and help you with your story. If your giftee's Tumblr does not allow anonymous messaging, please contact the mods and we'll remind them to turn that feature on.
  4. Have fun writing! Mods will be checking in with folks the week of December 25 (halfway point, -ish) to see how things are going, but don't feel like you need to wait until then to ask questions or ask for help. Need a beta reader, a cheerleader, or someone to help you bounce around story ideas? Hit us up! Have a problem or a question? Let us know!

Do the mods know who was assigned to them if they are also participating in the exchange?

Technically, yes, although generally most of us mods try to forget who we were matched with as soon as the assignments are done, if that makes any sense, because part of the excitement is the surprise of it all. And when we’re working on assignments, we generally try to focus on matching up prompts and likes with writers who will feel good about creating a fic that incorporates those prompts and likes.

So, if you happen to have a mod as a giftee, please just carry on as if we don’t know and interact with your giftee anonymously! It’s all part of the fun of the game, and part of the reason we got involved in running the exchange was because we have so much fun participating in it.
