I have a question I've been thinking bout too much but like. It seems at least to me that sashi and boone 's roles as wiseman and sidekick can be easily interchangeable so what are the differences to them??

Avatar

Phyllis and Phil have the choice to choose what destination avatar each Part Timer inhabits on any given mission zap. They pick the best avatar for each to inhabit, based on the best chances of winning the mission. Sometimes it’s a literal wise-person, or sidekick for example, sometimes it’s a subtler distinction. Sometimes the villain is surprising and the opposite of what you expect (Rippen general in 3 Big Problems, and Penn Giant Monster hero) Sometimes the sidekick is obvious visually ~ like Parrot or Monkey Sashi; sometimes it’s what Sashi could do in that role; her avatar in Shirley B Awesome for example, just as physically capable as Penn’s– and when she chooses to go Hero she is more than capable… So the choosing is Phyllis’ best guess at what would win the mission, it’s programmed by her into the MUT controls - and it’s not always the best choice. Phil seems to be not so great at it so far? Or is he? Hmmm….

Dear Sam, were there any inspirations for the chemistry/dynamic for Penn and Sashi's relationship?

Avatar

No. Other than the many things life and fiction that inspire us consciously and unconsciously... writing? Ideally and in this case, it’s purely organic from having developed the characters. We try as hard as we can to inhabit the characters and let them speak to us, and tell us who they are and from that... we choose the best path for them. And that’s where the writing comes from. Being true to who they are.... knowing what their fears are, what their strengths are, what their hopes and dreams are. And what makes them tick.

Something that didn't sit well with me during season 2 was Pigeons, was there ment to be something more with her or was she just ment as a "oh Larry's so rich he has a butler for his butler" kind of thing? I don't know why but I was so excited to see more of her or at least her what she sounded like.

Avatar

Thanks for noticing her. I’m not a fan of revealing much beyond what was presented in the episode… (because what is in the series is the story we were able to tell)… but just for you, yes indeed we planned to show more of her. When becoming co-butlers, Matthews and Fredericks needed someone to assist them. Haley Pigeons is Canadian 🇨🇦 and her personality is very no-nonsense and a hard worker—otherwise she wouldn’t be hired. Beyond that she is a mystery. (Remember in season 1’s QPC? They were holding interviews and Chuck and Rose pretended to be candidates? Well Haley Pigeons was hired shortly after that, after a long international interview process.) Also, Matthews and Fredericks remembered Rose’s unique “butler quality” and by the end of the series, they hired Uncle Chuck and Aunt Rose as their Co-butlers’ butler’s co-butlers. And of course, the Chinchilla is hired as the co-butlers’ butler’s co-butlers’ Butler (check its onscreen name tag) - though the Chinchilla would never consent to actually working for anyone. The Chinchilla just likes the sweet suit. And with his triumphant return to Middleburg Manor, Old Man Middleburg is glad to have so much help.

Feb 11, 1992…

It was my first year at NYU and my roommate Brad happened to have landed the role of the singing voice of Aladdin. I knew the recording session was happening that day, and wished him good luck the night before.

Brad left me a message on our dorm room answering machine: Quick! Hurry uptown now! I could attend the recording session in progress, as his guest!

Luckily I had walked back to my room after classes in time. And luckily I actually clicked on the machine to check messages; I often didn’t do that. This was an age before mobile phones so the urge to constantly check messages etc, was not in my programming. But I checked and I heard the message.

I immediately ran downstairs from our 15th floor dorm room in Rubin Hall (room 1508) on 5th avenue. I hopped in a cab. There was a lot of traffic… I remember regretting not taking the subway. I was freaking out, worried I would miss it…

Luckily, I got to the studio in time to watch both songs recorded: ‘A Whole New World’ and 'One Jump Ahead’. Brad Kane and Lea Salonga were singing. Alan Menken was there, as well as Ron Clements and John Musker (though I didn’t know what they looked like then to know it). There was a 65-piece orchestra playing. The music sounded big and beautiful. Hard to describe… I was already a huge fan of the Little Mermaid and Beauty & The Beast, and the music sounded similar to those, but so big and right there like you could reach out and touch it. It was emotional. It was huge. It was awesome.

This was beyond exciting for me, this super nerdy college freshman who was dreaming of one day working in animation…and especially, working at Disney. What are the odds that I ended up with a roommate that gave me this opportunity? Crazy.

This day definitely inspired me even more to stay on my path to try and work at Disney Feature Animation. And I did get there, just a little more than 4 years later, starting as an inbetweener on Hercules.

At the Aladdin session, lyricist Tim Rice was sitting near me and he was rewriting lyrics on the spot for the 'One Jump Ahead’ reprise. He was trying things, scribbling ideas down, running xeroxes by himself and then handing them out to everyone in the room, including me.

I saved it of course…

Here’s a little piece of history that I’m certain most of you have never seen…

Hey!!! I have a question after the end of the show and Pen and Sashi kiss, are they technically a couple??? Is there any conceptual art of them together doing things has a couple ??

Avatar

There is only what you saw, and whatever seems right to your mind. The end is what it is. Different than before...

Something we tried to do more of in season 2 was animate assets for the vendor studio to use before they began animating. The strength of a program like Harmony is that once something is animated it can be endlessly tweaked to look different without actually reanimating anything. This was a rough flying cycle I did for Sashi as a parrot in the whale boat world.

The way Rippen blew out that candle at the end.

So I just rewatched the Penn Zero series finale for the first time since it aired and uh… Wow. Not only is it still a great finale but, after being so disappointed with both Samurai Jack’s finale and Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie, it feels even MORE satisfying of an ending - and it was already pretty darn satisfying to begin with!

Everything was wrapped up nicely, all the characters got a chance to shine, nothing felt rushed with Rippen’s redemption being fairly foreshadowed and believable, there weren’t really any plot holes, all the dramatic moments had weight to them, and I lost count of how many times I laughed.

So yeah, this - along with Wander Over Yonder’s finale - are my favorite current show series finales, and THIS is what Jack defeating Aku/reuniting with his family and Arnold’s jungle adventure SHOULD HAVE BEEN!

Penn Zero: PartTime Hero is so underrated and I need like 50 more seasons.

Also, who ever animates Rippen’s facial expressions is after me personally…

Here’s Princess Penn Zero, inspired by the episode “The Princess Most Fair”! Watercolor is primarily used, with ink and colored pencils for outlines! It’s also my first Penn Zero fan art!

Awesome!!
