What are we really protecting kids from?
digital illustration of a nonbinary asian student sitting at a desk. On the ground are commonly banned books including, 'Gender Queer,' 'The Hate U Give,' and 'Not All Boys are Blue.' They are wearing a purple sweater with a pink sweater vest over. There's text that reads, 'protect kids from guns, not books.'

You’re right!

Are we really just supposed to memorize the names and genres? No substance beyond that? I don’t want to regurgitate the same bullshit I was supposed to memorize about white guys with little to no context or meaning behind it. Personally, I think it does these women a massive injustice. So! I’ve tried my best to make this list with ONLY free-to-read works. Have fun!

Margaret Cavendish

The Blazing World on Project Gutenberg

Mary Shelley

Emma Orczy

The Scarlet Pimpernel on Project Gutenberg

Catherine Lucille Moore

Pauline Hopkins:

Begum Rokeya

Octavia Butler

Her listing at Open Library.

Another reason why literature courses need to have a feminist bent. Teach these people as the founders of genres!

Hello,

I am a high school bookworm who is considering becoming a librarian. My question is, simple as: would you recommend pursuing this path? I understand that your experiences are unique.

Yes. I love my job, and I feel like the current world we live in needs librarians more than ever! Of course there are downsides, like with every job, but most of the time its super rewarding.

Good luck! 🥰

When we talk about the soft censorship of taking books out of libraries, off reading lists, out of classrooms, we need to shift the focus of that conversation from “protecting the readers” to empowering them. We need to teach kids to think for themselves. We need to expect them to think for themselves and then we need to be a lot more willing to trust them to think for themselves.
