“Ghosts” in KHR are made up of Dying Will Flames

I headcanon that the “ghosts” and “spirits” are an accumulation of Dying Will Flames. A “memory” if you will, of Flames, like the ones in the Vongola Sky Ring.

To support this theory, first up i’d bring up Ghost, Byakuran’s alternate self he brought over from a parallel world. When he tried to do so, that world was destroyed. And It may or may not have been mentioned that it also physically destroyed Ghost’s body as well (can’t quite remember), which means, really– only his Flames were brought over. Technically, Ghost is dead. (Which is why he’s nicknamed “Ghost” I believe.)

Then we’ve got the spirits of the Vongola bosses living in the Vongola Sky Ring. While they’re “engraved memories” it’s never really explained what that actually means. But since they are part of the tri-ni-set, their purpose is likely to take the Flames of their wearers for the sake of the world. And the Vongola Rings (at least the Sky Ring), leaves an impression of the bearers behind. On that note, Timoteo wasn’t dead when Tsuna got his Ring. But his spirit was still left imprinted in the ring. So these are “ghosts” made up of Flames even if one of them was alive.

In regards to Demon Spade. The dude was powerful. His Mist Flames were not only strong, the “man” himself was basically immortal. Why wasn’t he made into an Arcobaleno? It’d keep at least the Indigo Pacifier from needing to constantly be recharged, right? I’ll tell you why: It’s because the Arcobaleno Pacifiers feed on Flames. If Demon exists purely on Flames (like Ghost), without a physical body to produce more Flames, he’d run out sooner or later. It’s also why Demon wanted Mukuro’s (Mist) body to grow in strength. Why he needed Mukuro’s body since he’d been growing weaker by using up his Flames to fuck with Vongola.

Demon Spade is dead. For as much as he says he “abandoned” his body, his body died ages ago.

All that was left was a… lump– a concentration of Flames with his memory left behind. Once those Flames are used up, he goes poof. That’s why when he was losing against Tsuna and he decided to runaway and left Mukuro’s body, he was promptly unable to keep up his form any longer– he ~passed away~.

Additionally, in chapter 343, when the Oath Flames appeared (when the Sky Ring and the Simon Ring combined), Tsuna says he senses “a feeling of relief within the flame.” Then Demon gets angry that Giotto and Cozzato are messing with him as he addresses the Flames like they’re people.

So, at this point, it’s pretty clear that Dying Will Flames actually have a will of their own.

TLDR “ghosts” in the KHR-world are manifestations of Dying Will Flames.

As an added note: The ghosts that exist by their own Will on Earth seem to be attached to a physical anchor. The Vongola bosses-Vongola Sky Ring; Torikabuto-mask; Ghost-Mare Lightning Mare Ring; Demon Spade-the pocket watch.
