like the fact of the matter is that if you view "I think you might be a trans girl" as any more gendering a statement than "Can I help your sir?" or "She looked so pretty" or "Hello, ma'am," you are making a distinction based on the implicit belief that cis binary identities are the natural default while trans identities are aberrant. this is a scary thing to deconstruct in your head because if you're trans or an ally and you truly do support the idea of "tearing down the binary," it sucks to realize that you've been indoctrinated into a 24/7 process of gendering others which reinforces it! but the thing about combatting and deconstructing harmful frameworks and the systems of power which they prop up is that it is going to be uncomfortable, and you are going to be confronted with your complicity in reinforcing violent processes of gendering and sexation, and you are going to need to re-examine many of your habits and patterns of thought in a way that will feel unintuitive and difficult and counter to how you were raised. and you need to do it anyways! for yourself and for the trans people you love and for those who haven't been able to break through the constant, constant, constant coercive cis gendering yet. they're worth it

the amount of trans people i know who have had their accounts suspended, targeted, restricted etc is staggering. mostly for just existing

one of the best tips for Real Life that I’ve ever picked up is to always highball your estimate whenever someone asks you “when can you get this done by” by about 25% (if you can get away with it). that way, if it ends up being harder than you thought, you’ve got extra time to figure things out and if you were right about how much time it takes then you get to look like an absolute genius instead of just a simply competent person.

what you may not have realized is that I learned this crucial piece of life advice from an episode of Star Trek where Scotty is telling Geordi that whenever he told Kirk something on the Enterprise was at full capacity, it was always only ever a notch or so below full capacity so that Scotty looked like the god of all engineers when he was able to magically hack the warp drive to run a little beyond what he’d told everyone else was “full capacity” and honestly that one throwaway gag from Star Trek has changed my life.
