the lack of fics/ fandom content about Ciri and yennefer beautiful doughter/mother relationship is a shame. In the books their connection is so important... Ciri saves yen from villegfortz, chooses to be named "cirillla of vengerberg" in honor of her mother, calls yen "mummy" multiple times.

My headcanon about Yennefer and Sabrina is that they are actually really close friends but pretend to have a rivalry in front of other people. Sometime after the lightning challenge one of the failed novices (not Anica obviously) bullies Yennefer and Sabrina stands up for her. They become unlikely friends quickly and among their peers find it difficult to explain how/why they became friends so they just began a faux rivalry that has now lasted decades.

i wake up every day thinking about "i've searched so long. fought so long. hurt so many. and it was all worth it. no matter where you go or where you hide, we will never be apart. destiny brought us together. never lost. always found. i love you, my daughter." and crying all over again

I really don't understand how anyone could validate Oleander's way of teaching MC. Disrespect, demeaning and constantly throwing barbed insults are not in fact good tools of education. I do not care that MC knows nothing of the world they're in or of the depth of danger it holds. It was the same in book 1 and they survived. This is just a pedantic douche who behaves exactly like any other Fey would and uses the guise of 'it's for your education' to make them seem like a better person than they are. Enslaving someone is never and will never be the solution to anything. Especially not to get a point across that MC has already experienced first hand. Hello Radiance's betrayal? Hello almost getting killed by Beast Kieran? Let's not pretend MC's an ingenue (it's on the writers for making behave like one if she does). They chose to trust Oleander because Kieran told them they could. MC has a good heart and people keep making them feel like it's wrong and has no place even though it's literally the only reason the Moon Court still exists?

Back on Oleander, it's like y'all will take any representation and eat it up. MC has every right to be angry and feel disrespected by this stranger who keeps being straight up awful to them in the name of a cause they don't even really understand and no one will explain without mocking or making them feel entirely stupid for not knowing. Imagine teaching a child about the world like that. Oh? You don't already know everything? Oh you think that...let me stop you right there, you're not allowed to think on your own except if it's exactly the way we all already do. Oh you want to be yourself? Dumb mistake right there, let me constantly demean you as a way to teach you to be like one of us. You're perhaps a decent baby, but amongst adults you won't be able to pretend well enough to survive. Do you realize how insane that sounds?

You know what, this is exactly the type of thinking and way of doing things that fosters exactly the state of the fey courts today. I'm starting to think this Jack with the blade might have a point. Courts must be destroyed along with their antiquated, classists views where slavery is still a thing because humans aren't considered people, rather toys to play with.

Don't even come for me with the 'they're just brutally honest', that's the justification any asshole uses to be mean. As if the discourse being in any way purposeful in the mind of the person who says it dismisses any and all damage it can do. Intent doesn't disregard impact.

I am in no way saying people are not allowed to like a character that is mean. I'm just saying embrace the nefariousness instead of trying to justify it and pretend it's a good thing. Sometimes 'they're hot' is all you need to like a character. Look at the good it did for Nate Archibald.

Quotes from Kieran that straight-up sound like Shakespearean love poetry: an ongoing list

  • β€˜None may touch me. None but you.’
  • β€˜What is left of my heart belongs to you. When you leave, it will shatter anew.’
  • β€˜Tell me I did not hurt you.’
  • β€˜How am I expected to pass another century without the taste of you on my tongue?’
  • β€˜After so many decades spent hating each sunset, knowing nightfall would take my freedom from me... I began to yearn for the moonrise instead of cursing it. Because dreams of you might be waiting on the other side.’
  • β€˜I would rather be cursed to roam the wilds as a beast every night than live endless lifetimes without you.’
  • β€˜Wherever it is that souls may go, you will find mine waiting for you at the end of all things.’
  • β€˜You shall pay dearly for every spilled drop of her blood.’
  • β€˜I was not lying. Were you?’
  • β€˜Just this once, beloved... I wish you could not lie.’
  • β€˜You hold all of my heart, beloved. Now, and always.’
  • β€˜I would make and unmake the world for you, beloved.’
  • β€˜Believe me when I say I want every part of you. Every version. Now and future.’
  • β€˜Look, beloved. Your skin is a canvas covered in stars.’
  • β€˜If I were you, I would begin by thanking her and throw yourself on her continued mercy. Because you’ll get none from me.’
  • β€˜What would be the point of immortality without you?’
  • β€˜No magic. Like an everyday mortal.’
  • β€˜Insult her again, and I will carve my refusal into your flesh, so that you may never forget it.’
  • β€˜I don’t care what your title is. Every breath, every beat of my heart belongs to you. You are mine for life.’
  • β€˜Thank you… for sharing the sky with me.’
  • β€˜If you lay a single hand on her, there will be nothing left of this place but a hole in the ground.’

(And finally, BONUS: Quotes from *other* characters in The Cursed Heart that straight-up sound like Shakespearean poetry, because the writers of this book just do. not. rest.)

  • β€˜I know you. I’m not afraid.’
  • β€˜I love him so terribly, it hurts.’
  • β€˜You are so much stronger than you know. And a love as strong as this is worth fighting for.’
  • β€˜Even if you kill me, I’m glad I met you. Because you deserve to be happy, Kieran. You deserve to be loved. And I will love you until my very last breath.’
  • β€˜The world is rarely gentle to those who are so kind. It is you who must be the strongest of all.’
  • β€˜What do you want with that cursed thing?’ / β€˜To cut the Sun and the Moon from the sky.’
  • β€˜Anything here that wishes to eat me had best prepare to choke.’
  • β€˜I know you. And I love you. Both your darkness and your light.’
  • β€˜You are everything I want. Just you. Just like this.’

(I don’t know if this was directed a certain way but I love how Emma restrains Regina in this. I used to work law enforcement at a jail and this is fairly proper frontal holding. The way Emma’s right arm is pushed on her clavicles restrains a person from attempting a headbutt or biting and with force will pretty quickly knock the wind out of them. Her left hand is gripping Regina’s lower palm and thumb, rather than just the wrist, keeping the hand from being able to move or grip anything. Both these grips plus pushing force will cause the other person to easily lose their center balance so even if Regina tried to kick Emma, her balance would be lost and she would slip downward causing herself to be choked on Emma’s forearm. I love this because it shows Emma very much knows how to restrain an attack as a bail bonds person.)

Something I really really love about the Witcher books is how a lot of the story is about taking back agency over your own body. I don't think we talk about this enough ( I hope Netflix will show that a little more too)

Both Yen and Geralt have had horrible stuff done to them. Geralt's transformation might have been more physically extreme but both have been changed without their consent, knowledge and regards for their well being or mental health. And we meet them on the other end of those changes. (And of course we see more things done to them against their will or consent or with consent given under some form of duress).

We get to see Ciri at the beginning of all that. The entire plot is about how lots of people want to use her for her blood and genes with no regards for what she wants. She has to make sacrifices and changes in order to survive. A lot of the story is about how Yen and Geralt are trying to protect her (sometimes failing) from people who would use her body.

Even secondary characters like Milva share a bit of that story as well.

I think it's a really important part of the story, probably a lot more important than the monsters side. The books are focused on finding your family and taking back control over yourself, your body and your life and I think that's an interesting topic to explore

Anonymous asked:

Yennefer goes through the five stages of grief only to end up with searching for revenge for Tissaia.

Yes. I can see everything from denial to acceptance before she's searching for revenge for everything Vilgefortz did to her.

But while all of this happens her first priority will still be to find Ciri and make sure she has a save place when they found her.

I really hope that she is the one who fights Vilgefortz in the end and that she is the one who kills him but I am worried that they will let Ciri do that...

world building cause twn doesn't part 9: mages

you probably know a lot about mages on account of them being fucking awesome and super sexy, so let's dive into what exactly makes them that way.
colour code cause i fucking love colour codes - already happened/introduced, probably s2, important background info, stuff that might be in the prequel, extras
series masterpost

what are mages?

  • put simply, mages are anyone skilled and educated in the use of magic. but, most mages are also incredibly adept in politics, science, and religion
  • the vast majority of mages serve on royal courts, but others are teachers, researchers, or just kinda hobos
  • anyone can use basic magic (ie witcher signs), but it takes both natural talent and extensive training to be an actual mage
  • also important to note that while druids and priests can and do use magic, they aren't usually considered mages since they're not as involved in politics and science

education

  • mages go to school! a lot! powerful mages tend to track down young potential students and bring them to a school to receive formal training
  • well, "bring them" is a bit reductive, it's more like kidnapping.
  • there are quite a few important schools, so let's go!
  • aretuza is definitely the one you are the most familiar with, mostly because it's just the best. aretuza is an all girls academy located in temeria, a northern kingdom known for its powerful mages
  • aretuza is led by a rectoress, an incredibly powerful sorceress responsible for training the young adepts. i think there's only been 4 ever, first klara larissa de winter (also the founder), then leticia charbonneau, then tissaia de vries (the milf right there, and rectoress as of twn), and finally margarita laux antille
  • ban ard is the boys version of aretuza, located in kaedwen. the magicians from ban ard are notably... unskilled? they're just kind of clowns. the rector of ban ard was gerhart of aelle, also known as hen gedymdeith, because there's nothing like a nonsensical pseudonym to up your credibility. gerhart was literally the oldest mage alive until his heart died. after him, dorregary of vole took over as rector
  • mages in the north are pretty much exclusively trained at either aretuza or ban ard, but nilfgaard has a magical academy too!
  • the imperial magic academy is a co-ed school in loc grim, one of nilfgaard's two capitals. the emperors of nilfgaard tend to hire mages directly from this school

types of mages

  • most mages tend to specialize in a certain area of magic, such as illusions, alchemy, divination, polymorphy, weaponry, or spycraft
  • this is extra useful when assembling a team. not that anyone in particular is assembling a team, it's just good to know.

the brotherhood of sorcerers

  • the brotherhood is the main organization of mages in the witcher. they basically set the rules of magic for all the mages in the north, which are that demonology, necromancy, and artifact compression are strictly not allowed. the punishment was exclusion from the brotherhood and being locked in dimeritium (mage kryptonite) for centuries, but practically no one followed the rules or was punished
  • the brotherhood exists on a hierarchy, with most mages in the north making up the lower level, the council of wizards in the middle, and the chapter of the gift and the art at the top
  • the council is made up of a small group of mages that hold influence over the brotherhood but still need to answer to the chapter, as of twn the members are yennefer of vengerberg, philippa eilhart, radcliffe, carduin, and fercart. sheala de tancarville was part of it too, but she left
  • the chapter has the highest influence of magic in the north (and possibly the continent). it was founded by herbert stammelford, aurora henson, ivo richert, agnes of glanville, geoffrey monk, and radmir of tor carnedd. by twn, all of them had died or left, so the chapter was made of tissaia de vries, enid an gleanna, gerhart of aelle, vilgefortz of roggeveen, and artaud terranova. narses de la roche was the grandmaster of the chapter in 1245, but wasn't that involved much after.

politics

  • after mages graduate, the brotherhood usually places them on the court of a king/queen as an advisor. they're supposed to help strategize, conduct research, and just heighten the magical abilities of a kingdom
  • do they do this? nope
  • most mages are meant to clean up their king's messes, but usually get fed up and rule the entire kingdom from behind the scenes to fit their own agendas

can mages have babies?

  • short answer: yeah! although magic can make it harder to have babies, lots of sorceresses would take extra care to make sure they were as unaffected as possible. the forced sterilization was tissaia de vries' idea, and since she trained the vast majority of sorceresses we meet, most of them can't have babies
  • and yes, it's irreversible. sorry yen
  • geralt's mum, visenna, was trained as a druid, so she was still able to have geralt while practicing magic

who are they?

  • we meet a Lot of mages, so let's get to know a couple, starting with the ladies!
  • let's start with the lovely lovely yennefer. she was trained at aretuza under tissaia de vries, who became a mother figure to her. yen was also the youngest member of the council, as of twn she's 90. yes, that's very young to have a position of that caliber, especially since yen wasn't even an official advisor to aedirn's king

Headcanon: That bracelet Vilgefortz gave Tissaia had mind control enchantments on it that's why she was never worried about the novices going missing.
