''Hr. Jakop'' is a Norwegian folktale in the Wittenberg genre.

The Wittenberg school is a decently popular topic in folktales, as it was thought that the priests going to study there were under the tutelage of the devil. That the priests there would receive an education and the ''black book'' (in folklore, a book of spells that can't be burned, thought to be written by the devil) in exchange for 1 student of the graduating class were to give up their soul.

Which, I must admit, think is funny. In a ''so it's fine when YOU DO IT'' kind of way.

Tricking the devil to take their shadows instead of the soul is a pretty popular result as a way to showcase the priests wits. Not that it's much of a feat.

Fanden Tyken, The devil's stand in\actor, is my OC. (They\Them)

Original folktale under the cut.

Hahaha, the devil being kinda stupid makes so many sense in hindsight.

When I read your comic of him tormenting that man and he said "you will need a priest" (to get rid of him).

I was like??? What are you doing? Why telling them THAT?!

And it was his undoing.

(Tyken, my OC stand-in for the devil, uses They\Them pronouns. Just think of them as a sort of actor in the folklore comics. )

But yeah. Especially in Norway at least, which is where I draw most of my folktales from, they are described as very gullible and easily tricked. And one part of that can be considered as people making fun of a scary concept by making light of it.

So sure, why not laugh about it. :V

How do you trick the devil into selling your shadow instead of your soul?

Is it a Word trick from your linguage? Like Soul and sole.

Or in portuguese (in certain places because of accent) arma(soul) and arma (weapon).

Late reply is late, I just kept thinking that ''Oh I want to answer this with a comic'' but I have yet to start so I might as well answer now. :')

Still want to, and I do have a folktale I'm thinking of that would do the job alright. About the devil getting tricked into taking a shadow instead of a soul.

But no... I WISH it was half as smart as that, but the Scandinavian devil in the folk tales is just very gullible and easy to trick 9\10 times. And is also a huge wet blanket about it. :V

Think ''LOOK OVER THERE'' type of tricking in this specific instance.

Changing my username!

Also, a small grievance while I'm at it. Tumblr terminated my blog without warning, then I heard nothing over the course of 2 weeks. And then they reinstated it without telling me so it would be left up to chance for me to notice.

I'm admittedly miffed at all of this, but I'm glad I at least got to keep my art.
