I apologize if you’ve been asked this question before I’m sure you have, but how do you feel about AI in writing? One of my teachers was “writing” stories using ChatGPT then was bragging about how good they were (they were not good) and said he was going to sell them. To put aside any legal concerns in that, I’m just trying to talk him down from that because, personally, I would not enjoy dream job being taken by AI.

The poor man.

Many magazines have closed their submission portals because people thought they could send in AI-written stories.

For years I would tell people who wanted to be writers that the only way to be a writer was to write your own stories because elves would not come in the night and do it for you.

With AI, drunk plagiaristic elves who cannot actually write and would not know an idea or a sentence if it bit their little elvish arses will actually turn up and write something unpublishable for you. This is not a good thing.

AH, YESSS!!!

This was from one of those memes where you give someone a title and they construct a summary of a story they'd write with that title... I gave @chasingfigments this title, and she gave me the summary "Prompto’s ruse about being human is about to fall apart after his creator disappears—with all of the specialized tools Prompto needs for his maintenance. So when a man of no consequence arrives in an enchanted wagon and offers to help, Prompto has no choice but to trust him."

I'm building an outline from that, but I haven't gotten very far. I find the concept fascinating, though! I want to build on this!

Avatar

>:) I'm pretty sure I've talked about Kingslayer a LOT but I'm not sure if I've shared any of it! So here you go (warning for stabbing, blood, and technically death):

Kingslayer exerpt

They turn down an empty hallway. Ignis continues droning on, but Noctis is drawn out of his uneasy thoughts when the set of Ignis’s shoulders subtly stiffens, and his jacket shifts as he fiddles with his pocket.

OOOOH OMEN COR

Avatar

Hahaha, I just rediscovered this one in my files, and I'm actually excited to explore it again! It's only an outline, but the basic premise is that Noctis goes AWOL like in the Omen Trailer. Bahamut speaks to Regis and tells him that Noctis has gone too far and is beyond saving.

And then I have to decide whether Regis straight up sends Cor to take him out (but Cor thinks Bahamut isn't telling the whole truth, so he's reluctant) OR Regis goes after Noctis himself, risking the Wall and his health in the process, because he was the one who brought Noct into the world, and it’s his responsibility to take him out of it. All the while, Cor is trying to track Regis down before he makes a horrible, horrible mistake.

I like the idea! It'll take some thought to construct, though.

For the titles meme- what's up with the body swap wip? Is it stand alone, or part of one of your bigger projects?

Avatar

The Body Swap wip is a stand-alone; it's the result of a sprint prompt! Prompto gets sprayed with magical pollen and wakes up in Noct's silk sheets, pajamas, and body -- he notices things in that order! XD

It was a fun sprint concept, and I've held onto it because I thought I might finish it someday, but when I have time to write, I keep picking other projects to work on, so it's languishing, sadly.

WIP Title Meme!

@seaofolives tagged me! Thank you! XD

RULES: make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! then tag as many people as you have WIPs.

Hahaha, some of these have been languishing for YEARS (in fact I'm pretty sure some of these have shown up in this meme before XD) and my writing has been really spotty lately, so I'm not sure when they'll get finished, but I'm happy to gab about them!

how to start reading again

from someone who was a voracious reader until high school and is now getting back into it in her twenties.

start with an old favourite. even though it felt a little silly, i re-read the harry potter series one christmas and it wiped away my worry that i wasn't capable of reading anymore. they are long books, but i was still able to get completely immersed and to read just as fast as i had years and years ago.

don't be afraid of "easier" books. before high school i was reading the french existentialists, but when getting back into reading, i picked up lucinda riley and sally rooney. not my favourite authors by far, but easier to read while not being totally terrible. i needed to remind myself that only choosing classics would not make me a better or smarter person. if a book requires a slower pace of reading to be understood, it's easier to just drop it, which is exactly what i wanted to avoid at first.

go for essays and short stories. no need to explain this one: the shorter the whole, the less daunting it is. i definitely avoided all books over 350 pages at first and stuck to essay collections until i suddenly devoured donna tartt's goldfinch.

remember it's okay not to finish. i was one of those people who finished every book they started, but not anymore! if i pick up a book at the library and after a few chapters realise i'd rather not read it, i just return it. (another good reason to use your local library! no money spent on books you might end up disliking.)

analyse — or don't. some people enjoy reading more when they take notes or really stop to think about the contents. for me, at first, it was more important to build the habit of reading, and the thought of analysing what i read felt daunting. once i let go of that expectation, i realised i naturally analyse and process what i read anyway.

read when you would usually use your phone. just as i did when i was a child, i try to read when eating, in the bathroom, on public transport, right before sleeping. i even read when i walk, because that's normally a time i stare at my screen anyway. those few pages you read when you brush your teeth and wait for a friend very quickly stack up.

finish the chapter. if you have time, try to finish the part you're reading before closing the book. usually i find i actually don't want to stop reading once i get to the end of a chapter — and if i do, it feels like a good place to pick up again later.

try different languages. i was quickly approaching a reading slump towards the end of my exchange year, until i realised i had only had access to books in english and that, despite my fluency, i was tired of the language. so as soon as i got back home i started picking up books in my native tongue, which made reading feel much easier and more fun again! after some nine months, i'm starting to read in english again without it feeling like a huge task.

forget what's popular. i thought social media would be a fun way to find interesting books to read, but i quickly grew frustrated after hating every single book i picked up on some influencer's recommendation. it's certainly more time-consuming to find new books on your own, but this way i don't despise every novel i pick up.

remember it isn't about quantity. the online book community's endless posts about reading 150 books each year or 6 books in a single day easily make us feel like we're slow, bad readers, but here's the thing: it does not matter at all how many books you read or what your reading pace is. we all lead different lives, just be proud of yourself for reading at all!

stop stressing about it. we all know why reading is important, and since the pandemic reading has become an even more popular hobby than it was before (which is wonderful!). however, there's no need to force yourself to be "a reader". pick up a book every now and then and keep reading if you enjoy it, but not reading regularly doesn't make you any less of a good person. i find the pressure to become "a person who reads" or to rediscover my inner bookworm only distances me from the very act of reading.

Here we go... I'm up to my Bad Ends shenanigans again! This one made me tear up on the last read-through, just a fair warning.

My first impression of FFXV

It's such an irony that looking at this first,

I found the character aloof and an over-the-top edgy dude (who mostly acts like a jerk) I'll never like.

But then I could see his story from the beginning, when he was a kid clueless to his burdens and expectations,

to a youth who's overwhelmed by suddenly facing all the tragic events in his life, but still keeps it to himself as he manages to smile with his friends

Image

and finally to an older adult who's prepared for facing it all, as he fulfills his duty by giving himself up to his fate.

As if all that would be exactly what I'd feel in his situation, while his adult self is made to inspire someone like me.

It was such a beautiful plot that I grew to love this final fantasy main character a lot more than the rest, and the relationship between the main character with the rest felt really close and genuine that could make me understand him a lot more.

Idk how it 'could've been' but I still cherish the story that I got and often get emotional about it.
