i fucking love garcia flynn. still, you have to understand that his death was extremely necessary for the plot. without him, rufus would be dead and rittenhouse would still be on top, because jessica would still be alive.
and if you truly think about who his character is, then you will understand why he chose to stay in 2012. it all boils down to what his perspective was.
- firstly, no matter how much he cared for lucy, his wife and child were always going to hold the most special place in his heart. we have seen that throughout the entire plot of the show in how hard he fights to bring them back. and that makes sense, of course. if your loved ones die, you don’t just stop loving them. even if you fall for someone else, you don’t just stop loving them.
- he may have wanted to be with lucy, but he knew he wasn’t going to be. i think it was always clear that lucy was going to be with wyatt. even when jessica returned, they showed how she didn’t really click with wyatt in the way she had before, since she was not the same person. as for lucy, she was always in love with wyatt, and that never changed throughout the plot. knowing that they wouldn’t end up together, flynn returned to the people he had always loved and the one thing he had always wanted: he saw his wife and daughter one last time. and he was okay with dying for that, because, to him, it was worth it. he had already saved rufus and taken down a key member of rittenhouse, so he felt it was okay for him to stay behind and get the one thing he had always wanted.
(one thing i have noticed throughout this show is that flynn and wyatt have such similar plot lines. both of their stories begin with their wives/loved ones dying, and it sets them toward their work in timeless. their similarities continue as their plot lines continue. the only small variation is that wyatt fell in love with lucy first. the only way their plot lines majorly diverge is through jessica returning. that one plot detail leads to wyatt ending up with lucy, because she turns out to be someone he couldn’t continue loving. see, both flynn and wyatt were holding on to their loved ones’ deaths, but it is through jessica revealing that she is not who she says she is that wyatt is able to fully commit to lucy. so that’s a little bit of how wyatt fits into all of this.)
all of that combined is why flynn chose to stay in 2012 and didn’t end up with lucy. essentially, it is all about the psychology of his character.
also, for everyone shaming the writers for not giving him his family back: THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THE SHOW LITERALLY WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THAT HAPPENING. IT IS THE BEGINNING OF FLYNN’S ARC AND THE CATALYST OF THE ENTIRE SHOW. TIMELESS AS IT IS WOULD NOT EXIST WITHOUT IT.
i personally appreciate the finale, despite some of its flaws, and i am just glad that we finally got a worthy end for this amazing show. because no matter what happened, they all got what they wanted.
