you know what really hit me about thanksĀ is that ,,, the instrumental really perfectly describes seventeen. they literally started from nothing. cheol was in the company when tempest was supposed to be a thing and jihoon just wanted to make music. hansol was the kid who was always different and he stopped school because he wanted to create instead of just being someone. seungkwan is a small town boy with big dreams. above all, soonyoung just wanted to dance. minghao was the kid who barely spoke korean when he started training. junhui was the kid with the set future, the one who was in one of chinaā€™s top schools and played piano and was excellent in every field he was in. wonwoo was quiet and silent and yet he did so much for the people he really cared about. mingyu was the pretty boy who everyone often thought wouldnā€™t amount to anything. seokmin was the main vocal who always got sidelined, the kid who just wanted to sing. jisoo moved from america and the only thing he had that reminded him of his life in america was probably the guitar he had, and he just wanted to sing. jeonghan was the picture perfect kid who dreamed with his eyes open and treasured his music above anything else and anyone else. chan was so damn young when he started training and he gave all the things normal kids have, like friends and free time, because he had a vision and a dream and he knew exactly where he wanted to be. the thirteen of them were always dreamers. they dreamed, they hoped, and most importantly, they followed through.

so think of seventeen who started from nothing. from the green practice room and the swinging guitar and the emo haircuts. from the constant delays and named t-shirts. from the pod-casts and lives. from 17 project. so think of the thirteen of them. seungcheol, the leader, doe eyed and always ready to help. jeonghan, the sharp-eyed, witty hyung who always knew what to say. jisoo, warm, smiling, careful, reserved (and once upon a time, homesick before he became) settled. junhui, music at his fingertips and love in his voice and a million untold stories in his eyes. soonyoung, who tells his stories with the way he closes his eyes when he dances, who tells his stories with his body and all of him. wonwoo, misunderstood, heart warm, every heartbeat dedicated to running and running behind who he wanted to be as a child. jihoon, music in the way he spoke, music in him when he did anything, who breathed music and thought about music all the time, who loved and treasured seventeen above everything else. minghao, going from struggling in korean to openly speaking what he wanted to, who is so shy and yet so much more, who smiles at everyone, who makes us smile. mingyu, tall, clumsy, handsome, but above all, who broke down all the barriers that stood between him and his dream, who bypassed all the criticism to become a role model for so many of us. seokmin, sunshine in his eyes, sunshine in his smile, sunshine in his voice, who always looked at us with so much fondness and love whenever he could, who always expressed himself so beautifully with his words. seungkwan, who never wants us to have a bad day, who always tells us to look after ourselves and loves us so wholeheartedly and fully and makes us laugh even if we donā€™t want to. hansol, the kid who grew up so much from his experiences, who is so quiet and so reserved and yet so wild and uncontrolled and so relatable, who writes music and just wanted to create. chan, who danced and danced as a kid, chan who probably never had a significant other, chan whoā€™s first love was his music, chan who grew up so well, chan who loves and respects his twelve brothers so much.Ā

and now think of where they are.

the thanks they speak of in this song is heartfelt because itā€™s the most unrestrained kind of thanks. itā€™s the wild, desperate kind of thank you. it speaks so much and so little at the same time. thank you for staying, thank you for being here, thank you for listening, thank you for believing, thank you for always trusting us, thank you for yesterday and the day before and the very first day and tomorrow and the day after and the very last day. thatā€™s what i hear when i shut my eyes and listen to the song. itā€™s a thank you thatā€™s filled with so much that it echoes in the bass and the percussion and the vocals.

so seventeen:

thank you. for everything. for the good times and the bad times. for the first time you won a music show and seungkwan started crying and couldnā€™t sing and the unit leaders started crying and junhui wiped jihoonā€™s tears. for the time you won artist of the year at the asian artists awards and you all were so pleased. for the time you saw your parents after a long time at 17 project and all of you were willing to show us how much you missed them. for one fine day and the chili paste prank and the chicken fight (and jeonghanā€™s hair in one fine day in japan) and the happiness you shared. for strength-coups and yoon-cheonsa. for soonyoung and seokminā€™s comeback song. for bang-chan. for jeon wonwoo the bag of luck. for mingyu-sunbaenim. forĀ ā€œitā€™s gonna be lit, like these candlesā€ andĀ ā€œif you donā€™t know who we are, please check us outā€. for american line. for jisooā€™s n-line poems. for minghaoā€™sĀ ā€œif there is light in this world i hope it shines on you.ā€ for my i. for highlight. for the performance unit. for the vocal unit. for the hip hop unit. for 13 + 3 + 1 = 17. for giving us so much to be happy for when some of us donā€™t have a reason to even be remotely happy sometimes.

thank you for just being you.

Sometimes youā€™re 23 and standing in the kitchen of your house making breakfast and brewing coffee and listening to music that for some reason is really getting to your heart. Youā€™re just standing there thinking about going to work and picking up your dry cleaning. And also more exciting things like books youā€™re reading and trips you plan on taking and relationships that are springing into existence. Or fading from your memory, which is far less exciting. And suddenly you just donā€™t feel at home in your skin or in your house and you just want home but ā€œMomā€™sā€ probably wouldnā€™t feel like home anymore either. There used to be the comfort of a number in your phone and ears that listened every day and arms that were never for anyone else. But just to calm you down when you started feeling trapped in a five-minute period where nostalgia is too much and thoughts of this person you are feel foreign. When you realize that youā€™ll never be this young again but this is the first time youā€™ve ever been this old. When you canā€™t remember how you got from sixteen to here and all the same feel like sixteen is just as much of a stranger to you now. The song is over. The coffeeā€™s done. Youā€™re going to breath in and out. Youā€™re going to be fine in about five minutes.

4. If the car pulls up to you run in the opposite direction.

5. Walk with your keys in your hands and keep a key between each finger

6. If they put you in the trunk kick out the headlights

7. If you get lost find a woman with a child. Never ask a man for help (this one was drilled)

That scream fire piece of advice is literally life saving

8. Watch your shadows and reflections, especially if someone is walking behind you. A split second notice is better than none and will help you.

Yes this last one really saves lives y'all I do it all the time

girls have to learn to view the world like international intelligence agents just to be safe walking down the street. smh.

guys pls pls pls reblog and girls pls pls pls be safe out there. terrifying and so sad that we have to worry about this on a daily basis

(Iā€™m an enby, but, frankly, this is helpful for anyone.)

- always tell someone where youre at and an approx time when youll be back

Add text replacement words in your phone if possible. Something short and memorable that you can send quickly to people in moments of emergencies.

E.g.

I f ing hate that we need to reblog this, people suck, but this will save lives.

Also, do not walk close to walls. It will be easier for someone so walk past you and push you against it or corner you.

If your gut is telling you to cross the street or change your path, do it. Donā€™t risk it. Your body knows.

If you can, buy a large umbrella and walk holding it. Studies say that predators are less likely to attempt an attack on someone that could fight back. Keys around your knuckles is fine but youā€™ll need to get very close to do damage. Umbrellas are more precise.

Avoid wearing headphones if you are alone on an empty street. Look aware.

Again: Stay. Away. From. Walls.

Entering an uber alone? Call your father (or anyone you trust) and say ā€œhey dad! Yep, Iā€™m almost there, Iā€™m sending you the route.ā€ outloud. Then proceed to send them the route so they can follow the uber drive. This will most likely intimidate the predator.

If you see someone in an uncomfortable or possibly dangerous situation, walk up to them and say ā€œBetty, oh my god, I havenā€™t seen you in so long!ā€. If she gets slightly confused, you can whisper and let her know youā€™re trying to help and that she should follow along. Walk together to another station or away from where you are. The man will most likely not follow. I have done this one 2 times and can be very helpful.

If you are unsure she needs help, you can pass her a note saying something like ā€œhey, I noticed this man beside you is making you uncomfortable. If youā€™d like help, fake a sneeze right now and I will come up to you and pretend we are friends.ā€ This is a long note, but its an example. Be discrete. If she follows along, proceed with the previous tip. This is helpful when youā€™re in a crowded train and you notice harassment.

Help your sisters. Trust them. Trust yourself. Be safe.

i wish there was a name for a kind of song thatā€™s catchy, upbeat, and worth dancing to, but also bittersweet and tinged with an unexplainable sadness.Ā

the best i can describe it isĀ ā€˜songs you would put in an amv when a long series is over and youā€™re reminiscing on the journey while holding back sobsā€™

good examples:

  • little talks (of monsters and men)
  • what you want (two door cinema club)
  • glad you came (the wanted)
  • sun is shining (axwell ingrosso)
  • i lived (onerepublic)
  • mr. big shot (anarbor)

Yā€™all I love this post and had to make a spotify playlist of all these songs, (including ones in the tags+replies)

iā€™m glad to see people coming together with the same musical interest. i highly recommend looking through these, or adding your own!Ā

General observations about this post coming back to it after making the initial playlist;

  • Lots of Imagine Dragons. So much Imagine Dragons.
  • Several people have come up with names for this genre, my personal favorites beingĀ ā€œdance melancholiaā€ ā€œmusical repriseā€ and ā€œdepression bopsā€
  • I see the homestucks in the notes/replies. IĀ knew putting How Far Weā€™ve Come in would pull yā€™all out of the cracks

I put it in the playlist description but if you have suggestions pop me an ask or put them in the tags/your post reply! The playlist is still a work in progress, so any additions are welcome!

As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:

  • Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.
  • Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he saysĀ ā€œā€¦.Ahā€¦.. that must be a Russian one thenā€¦.ā€
  • Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.
  • Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the wordĀ ā€œprĆ©servatifes.ā€ Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.
  • Defined a slang term for meā€¦ā€¦. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.
  • Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He saidĀ ā€œI donā€™t knowā€ and turned to me and askedĀ ā€œIs there an English equivalent forĀ ŠŃƒŠ¼ŠøŠ·Š¼Š°Ń‚ŠøчŠµŃŠŗŠøŠ¹?ā€ and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.
  • Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turnedĀ ā€œHow stressful!ā€ intoĀ ā€œWhat stressing!ā€

Bilingual characters are great but if youā€™re going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And itā€™s usually 10x funnier thanĀ ā€œOoops itā€™s hard to switch back.ā€
