Dustcarve Dig Banners & Dividers

Snagged the completed Dustcarve Dig background image this morning, and immediately thought “I should do another banner & divider set based on that” - yes, these are formatted exactly like my existing Coliseum and Scene sets. While there were five days of digging, the underlying image really only lends itself to being divided into four strips of images.

When linking from these images, make sure you’ve clicked on an image in the  photoset and are doing your right click -> copy image link from the full size (640 pixel width) images, not from the downsized dashboard images. You are also welcome to copy these images and host them somewhere else if you find that more convenient. Attribution is not required, but should link back to this post if done.

Enjoy!

btw if my hatred for streaming services wasnt apparent enough the fact that infinity train is being deleted from every platform and all its music taken down from spotify and the fact that there is not a physical copy of the entire series and it got cancelled before it finished despite being one of the most beloved and well crafted cartoons of our generation

if it wasnt evident i think its time we realize that streaming services and corporations will literally run actual art into the fucking ground if it saves them a few dollars and why i will never, despite loving the craft, willingly go into an industry that does this shit

and obviously to any artists in the anim industry (and those who chose not to be) if you see this: YOU are the people we are rooting for. YOU are the ones who bring to life the stories everyone loves. do what you need to to keep those things safe and close to you and share them with the people who deserve them, not a company whos going to gut you and sanitize something you put your soul into.

how hard do you think bookbinding is? Could I learn how to do it? How much equipment does it take?

Hello! Bookbinding does not actually take all that much equipment to get into. In fact, I started this blog on the premise that you can (mostly) bookbind with stuff you get out.of dumpsters. You need:

  • Paper for the inside
  • A needle and thread. (Preferably thicker, preferably waxed thread. You can use the non-plastic dental floss for this at first)
  • Some thicker/prettier paper for the covers
  • Something to poke holes with (a thumbtack, an awl, etc)
  • (optional) something to help you fold pages. The official bookbinder’s tool is a bone folder but you can use a credit card or the flat back of a butter knife to start

You can start out by making pamphlets with nice covers to get the hang of the sewing bits. Once you move onto books with harder covers, you will need

  • Some kind of stiff thing for the cover. Cardboard from cereal boxes, taking the covers off of cheap thrift store books, etc
  • Craft knife, the kind that uses single use utility blades (usually pretty cheap)
  • Glue. PVA for bookbinding is a little more expensive but you can use white Elmer’s glue for your first try. Also a lot of bookbinding uses wheat paste, which is just flour and water
  • Something to squish your book flat while it dries. You can use cutting boards with a bunch of weights on top, and people have also been able to make their own book presses out of wooden cutting boards and big carriage bolts for not too much money, although it requires a drill.

As with many hobbies, you can get pretty far into the rabbit hole of “fancy crafting equipment” but there is a lot of technique you can learn with just simple stuff.

YouTube channels SeaLemon and DAS Bookbinding have some really great tutorials to look through!

Plus also the @renegadepublishing discord is extremely newbie-friendly and willing to answer all sorts of questions!

I think I found my new favorite rabbit hole. This voice actor does Shakespeare scenes in a southern accent and I need to see the whole damn play. Absolutely beautiful

if you're not from the us american south, there's some amazing nuances to this you may have missed. i can't really describe all of them, because i've lived here my whole life and a lot of the body language is sort of a native tongue thing. the body language is its own language, and i am not so great at teaching language. i do know i instinctively sucked on my lower teeth at the same time as he did, and when he scratched the side of his face, i was ready to take up fucking arms with him.

but y'all. the way he said "brutus is an honourable man" - each and every time it changed just a little. it was the full condemnation Shakespeare wanted it to be. it started off slightly mock sincere. barely trying to cover the sarcasm. by the end...it wasn't a threat, it was a promise.

christ, he's good.

the eliding of “you all” to “y’all” while still maintaining 2 syllables is a deliberate and brilliant act of violence. “bear with me” said exactly like i’ve heard it at every funeral. the choices of breaking and re-establishing of eye contact. the balance of rehearsed and improvised tone. A+++ get this man a hollywood contract.

I’m not from the South but let me tell you something: I have never understood or felt any of Julius Caesar as clearly in any other interpretation as I did with this actor. Just. Gave me chills.

Desert plants: Oh no thank you I’m not thirsty :)

Desert animals: Ok, I need a heat lamp set to exactly 83.15f eight months of the year. I need to be lightly spritzed during august if I’m medium spritzed I WILL die. If I’m not spritzed at all, I WILL die. When I enter my pupal state you will need to put me in the freezer, which should be set to exactly

Jungle plants: Ahah sorry I died. I said I was semi-shade, not full shade. But if you give me too much sun I’ll also die. By the way watering me is not enough you NEED to soak my entire body for three to five minutes twice a day. Also,

Jungle animals: Mmmmmm coconut substrate

At first glance I thought that was a throne and I was like

“Buddy, I know you’re an other-worldly cosmic being from the realm of curiosity and all… but that’s NOT how you sit on a chair my dude.”

But then I realized that was silly of me! Its a pillar! Ya know, the customary sitting furniture of non-Euclidian lifeforms from beyond our scope of understanding!

Take these lessons to heart kids!

~Take your time when exposed to new information. Absorb and think before you speak out against something you may not fully understand. Who’s to say what someone is doing is wrong? Your experiences and world views will never be the same as someone else. So don’t make assumptions!

~Open up your 3rd-10th eyes! Its a beautiful world out there and there is so much to learn!

~Pillars are the superior seating arrangement!

Unfun fact: the smallpox vaccine was made available in the US at about the year 1800 (by a man unfortunately named Valentine Seaman). Despite smallpox’s deadly effects on first nations populations, the Indian Vaccination Act of 1832 did little to help suffering communities. Rather, vaccines were used as manipulative tools to force natives to give up their lands and move to a reservation.
