Idleness- Chapter 1

A buzzing “OPEN” sign in the window of a small convenience store welcomed me into Seattle, along with the smell of rotten milk and old meat that hit me as soon as I stepped in the door. My first night in the beautiful city, and I was picking up Velveeta Mac and Cheese, cigarettes, and beer, all the while trying my hardest not to throw up from the horrid smell. There were about three other people in the store, including a tall man who was very attractive. I thought nothing of him, knowing that I probably would never have the courage to speak to him. As I stood waiting in line to check out and get the hell out of the store, I felt someone tapping on the back of my shoulder. When I turned around, I nearly dropped everything from my hands. It was the man with a nice face, looking down at me with furrowed eyebrows.

“Do you smell that?” He asked, scrunching his nose up in disgust. I noticed a tiny, silver ring latched around his nostril. I couldn’t reply, due to my nerves that were rubbed raw from the anxiety I felt. Instead, I just nodded.

“I bet it’s that dude in front of you. He probably just took a shit and didn’t wipe.” The stranger whispered in my ear, trying not to be too loud. I looked at the man in front of me whose toupee was falling and jacket was stained. I couldn’t help but laugh, but quickly bit it back when the man’s head snapped around.

“Told you. He knows it, too.” I was practically shaking in my boots as the attractive stranger moved from behind me and stood to my right. “My name is Sean, by the way. Sean Kinney.”

“Raven Newsome.” I smiled and jerked my head to the side nervously. My hands suddenly became slippery and I struggled to keep a grip on my boxes of macaroni.

“Well its quite lovely to meet you, Raven Newsome.” Sean bobbled his head from side to side and spoke in a voice that was so posh, it reminded me of my fathers.

“Same to you. I, uh better go pay for my stuff.” I tried my best not to seem rude, but I knew that I’d come off that way. After everything had been paid for, I shot out of the store, opening a pack of cigarettes, and trying to avoid Sean. I failed.

“Hey, Raven, wait up!” I heard his voice call from behind me. When I turned around, he was closer than I’d expected, making me nervous.

“What are you doing later on?"

"Sleeping."

"Sounds good, but wouldn’t you rather hang with me and a few of my buddies? There’ll be beer and cable T.V. It’s all free, not including myself.” Sean winked at me then chuckled a little.

“I don’t know. This is my first night here and I’m pretty wiped out from unpacking. Maybe, uhm, maybe another night?” I was surprised at my own bravery, but Sean didn’t seem to know the difference.

“I guess so. Can I at least walk you home?” Sean rocked back and forth on his toes as he made puppy dog eyes.

“I think I can handle it. Thank you, though.” I lit my cigarette and tossed my lighter back into the grocery bag.

“You know, Raven, I only want to walk you home, so I can be sure that I’ll see you again."

I was stumped by Sean’s honesty. He didn’t know me, at all. What was there to see? But he was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. The kind of beautiful that made you want to scream at the top of your lungs out of frustration because you couldn’t understand how beauty that great was possible.

"Walk me home, Sean.” I smiled and waved my cigarette towards in his direction so he would follow me. He jumped up and ran up beside me. We walked in silence, giving me more time to wonder what the hell I was doing, and even more time to not care.

“I know you should be thanking me for protecting you from all the creeps and freaks out in the night that could have possibly swept you away and kept you in captivity for years and years, but I’m going to thank you for allowing me to.” Sean stood behind me while I unlocked my front door as he spoke, and everything he said made me smile.

“Don’t mention it. Have fun at your party.” I stepped inside and held the door open to see Sean’s face one more time.

“Yeah, yeah. Sleep tight.” Sean waved his hand at me with a sly grin on his face as he walked away from my porch. I closed the door when I lost sight of him, hoping that I would see him again. Eight hours in a new city and I already had a reason not to leave.

By the way I’m sorry for putting this in the Sean Kinney tag without a read more thingy but I’ll figure out how to do it sooner or later.
