I ramble a bit about music in this one because there was a point I wanted to share but couldn’t quite find. Here it is now:
Music allows people of different abilities and skills to create together. We can swing dance along to a brilliant trumpet solo, play second fiddle, clap our hands and it’s all still making music together according to whatever we can each manage in the moment. So unlike games of chess or other intellectual feats, Sherlock needn’t match Eurus’ skills on violin in order to share in the joy and rightness in their performance. As long as he is willing to pay attention and work with her, they can play beautiful music together, and that is enough.
Eurus’s exceptional intelligence may make her an easy candidate for Ravenclaw, but that is her condition, not her preference or motivation. The chance to work together is much more valuable, and the kind of music they come to make together works both as a demonstration of Sherlock’s investment in her (through the effort of learning) and what is possible when they find ways of being together without the barriers of their respective intrinsic capacities.
Personally, as a musical Ravenclaw, I enjoy playing together with others and see it as a fundamental components of our species sociality, but I’m just as happy studying the phenomenon as I am engaging in it. While Eurus’ desperation comes out of her extreme deprivation of loving respectful relationships, her rejection of speech in favour of music priorities what this medium of interaction allows for: cooperative creativity and understanding despite differences, over direct explanation and interrogation. If that isn’t hufflepluff, I don’t know what is.
I don’t disagree with Hufflepuff! :-) Although I think for a true sorting, I’d have to feel like she’d had a good chance for affectionate human interaction over a period of at least a few years before I could dive in to distinguish between possible Hufflepuff qualities and just a basic need for the kind of connection she’s been deprived of for 30 years.
My mommy heart suggests putting her in Ravenclaw just because I want the best chance for peers who can respect and honor intellectual difference… but if there were known people in any of the Houses who I thought could be good with her, I’d send her wherever they were!
I probably said all this in the roundtable, but I’m afraid to go back and listen. ;-)
As a Ravenclaw of average and indifferent musical ability, the bumper to this TPP episode is my favorite experience of making music with others of greater skill. :-)
As a Slytherin with no musical skill but a love for dancing, I’m so happy that this conversation is still going on. :)
