ABOUT 

✣ This fest was inspired by the engraving on the inside of Harry’s lion ring that reads the same. While we may not know the meaning, we all know that sometimes the second chance is what you need to finally get it right. 

✣ "Second chances are riddled with self-doubt, irrational fears of falling short or making a mistake, and not living up to the potential you got a firsthand taste of the last go 'round.” If you could have a second chance, what would you do with it? 

✣ "We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences - be they positive or negative - make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow."

✣ Individual interpretations of the theme are welcome, this blurb is to get you started.

✣ MUST be 18 or older to participate as an author 

✣ Fic plots and prompts must have an element of 'second chances' or 'trying again' within them to qualify for the fest.

✣ All kinks and tropes are welcome, but must be clearly and appropriately tagged.

✣ All pairings are welcome but the main pairing must be two of the former members of One Direction.

✣ Minimum word count is 5,000

Something I've been thinking about a lot is when Felix and Oliver skip the ball to hang out with each other and drink on that bridge after Felix throws Oliver's dad's rock in the water. It is when Felix first gives Ollie his "in" to Saltburn and invites him over for the summer. I've seen a lot of debate as to whether or not Oliver has a master plan from the beginning to usurp Saltburn and I feel like that scene on the bridge basically seals the deal for me that, while I'm sure Oliver did have *some* kind of plan for himself with Felix, it certainly wasn't to murder him and take his castle lol. Just the way Ollie is looking up at Felix with big, shiny, glassy eyes and smiling so openly and unguarded like Felix is God, like Felix is the only person he's ever seen....idk it's not giving "calculating mastermind" for me, it's giving "I need you I need you I need you and I'll do anything to have you." I think this is the moment where Oliver finally allows himself to believe, even briefly, that he just might be able to have Felix if he keeps playing his cards right. Felix chooses to spend his end of the year party alone with Oliver, letting him participate in sentimental family traditions and drinking with him one on one outside all the festivities happening around them. Oliver sees this moment as a promise "come to saltburn" as well as almost a kind of elopement, a sacred, intensely private moment that is not to be perceived by anyone else. There is such a strong "insider/outsider" dichotomy at play over the course of the film. When Ollie is alone on the bridge with Felix, Oliver is on the inside and I think it is when he decides he cannot ever allow himself to be on the outside of Felix's world again.

Also worth mentioning that the maze scene acts as a direct parallel to this scene - they are once again alone together as a party rages on just out of sight offscreen. They are once again speaking in hushed tones only to each other, they are once again at the precipice of a major event. Only this time Oliver feels Felix truly slipping out of his grasp, whereas on the bridge Felix is drawing closer and closer to him, in this moment he is falling away. Oliver realizes again that he cannot let Felix get away, he cannot go back to being on the outside looking in at him. The need is all encompassing and all consuming. Oliver makes his decision and follows through, just as Oliver accepted his invitation to Saltburn, he is now accepting that his invitation has been rescinded and if he can't stay inside by invitation he must now use force.

Ugh. This movie is going to end me lol
