Y'ALL THIS IS THE NEW WHITE HOUSE MONKEYPOX COORDINATOR HOLY SHIT

Biden really said "I think we need a raging queer leather daddy doctor to run the country's monkeypox response" and he was RIGHT

yeah this is based

Oh fuck that is a good call: that's a gentleman whose career started while AIDS was in full swing within his community, who has championed harm reduction approaches to infectious disease, and who is pointed in his insistence on destigmatizing high risk communities rather than setting himself apart from them. This is someone who understands harm reduction and meeting people where they are without judgement, which is precisely the attitude you want to have when you grapple with a stigmatized epidemic.

Here's an article about his appointment to director of HIV/AIDS prevention from February 2021. Look at his career: he's been working in HIV/AIDS nearly his entire adult life and career. He's been working on increasing public health within stigmatized populations by focusing on harm reduction that entire time. Hell, this is someone with the institutional memory to remember Anthony Fauci's piss poor treatment of HIV during the Reagan administration and carry a grudge because the man didn't go far enough.

By the way, this is absolutely an example of harm reduction in terms of exercising your right to vote: there is zero chance that an advocate like Daskalakis would have been appointed under a Trump administration, but the incoming Biden administration installed him in the previous director position (which he still holds, as he adds monkeypox to his case load) as early as late 2020, before Biden was even properly inaugurated. That doesn't mean this administration is perfect or that we can't continue to agitate for better change, but it does mean that things are better and fewer people are going to die. That's basic harm reduction in action: you focus on survival for the most people as your metric, you take the route that results in the best outcome for the situation you have, and you do not ever let the imaginary perfect become the enemy of the tangible better.

Fuck, this is delightful good news. Well done Dr. Daskalakis, and all the best of luck to you and yours!

My fatal flaw is that I wake up on a good pain day and am like chronic illness who? and then behave recklessly and wake up the next day and am like oh yeah. THAT chronic illness.

Really sad that we are approaching the end of disability pride month and there hasn’t really been any representation. So I’m just going to say all the things I wish was said more this month.

  • Y’all physically disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all mentally disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all sensory disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all chronically ill disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all invisibly disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all neurodivergent disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all queer disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all trans disabled peeps are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all disabled peeps who are scared to call themselves disabled are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all disabled peeps with a mobility aid are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all disabled peeps with a service animal are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3
  • Y’all disabled peeps who need extra accommodations and care are beautiful and valid and more than appreciated. Your existence has purpose and you are not less than because you are disabled. <3

Every disabled person is deserving of positivity, love, and respect. I wish more of that was spread around this month because we are so strong and deserve to have pride in ourselves.

I wanted to make this post for a long time now. I hope someone finds it helpful

Things that helped me to get better: 1. I stopped checking the social media of the people that were mean to me. I know, I know. Why would I choose to check it in the first place? It’s so counter intuitive! But there’s something so compelling about looking at their profiles from time to time, just to see how their lives are going.. It was almost like a way to harm myself.. It’s like a black hole, it sucks you in and you can’t stop scrolling through their posts and pictures and all the sad memories start flooding into you mind.. So stop scrolling through the profiles of the people who once hurt you. Once I made this decision I felt so, so much better!

2. Change your alarm sound to a softer, calmer one. Put your alarm as far away from you as possible so you are not tempted to turn it off. I used to set the loudest, the most annoying sound as my alarm and my mornings were nothing but true anxiety. My heart started racing when the alarm went off, it wasn’t the best way to start the day! My favorite alarm sound is the “Uplift” (on iPhone)

3. Water. Drink water. Do not aim to drink 3 litters of water a day, it’s hard. Very hard. But try to drink a bit more than you’re used to. You will feel the difference, you may not see it right away, but you will feel it at first. I try to drink at least a glass of water right after I get out of bed and then another glass after shower. If you don’t like drinking plain water all day, you can add lemon to it (it tastes great!) or some fruits. Here’s how to make infused waters at home: X and X

4. Use a planner. Just take it and start writing your tasks for the day. Do not try to write everything down perfectly. There’s no need for that. Just write down everything you want to do that day and prioritize the tasks. You will see how much easier it is to plan your day and you will be free from keeping everything in your head! Also there’s something so satisfying in scratching off the completed tasks!

5. Shower. Some people might not understand how hard it can be to even have a shower when you’re at you lowest point. I know how hard it can be. I admit that there were days that I haven’t been showering at all.. I was just lying in bed, the blinds shut, until 3pm. It was a horrible time. But it’s in the past now and I’m grateful for that. So, shower. You will feel so much better after it, not only because it’s healthy but it’s just so nice to feel the water on your skin, it’s almost therapeutic.

6. Try the 5 second method. Here’s a great video about it. In short, whenever you feel that you can’t get out of bed, start a new project, do something, start counting from 5 to 1 and at “one” just do the thing! Do not think about it. Just do it. (Nike was right!) By doing this method you are breaking the habit of putting things off. You don’t give yourself time to think about the task and find ways to sabotage yourself. I’ve been using this method for getting out if bed every morning and it words amazing. I also use it to make myself stop scrolling through social media. It can be applied to every aspect of your life which in time will grow into a new, healthy habit!

7. Do not wait until you’re super hungry. When you feel the first signals of hunger, eat something. Coming from the past of restriction and binge eating I’ve had my hunger/fullness cues really messed up. I didn’t know when I should eat and when I shouldn’t.. it didn’t help my mental health at all, only was making it worse. Now I’m learning to eat when my body needs it, almost like children eat, like I used to eat when I was a kid. It’s hard, but it’s worth it. So when you feel that you don’t mind eating something, do it. Like Remus Lupin said: “Eat, you’ll feel better”

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ABOUT BISEXUALITY

that purple in the middle is not the right saturation, it doesn't fit with the other two colors and it drives me crazy.

all right, I think I got this, I've got dual citizenship and I have another flag we can borrow from:

step 1

step 2

step 3

This is true bi/ace solidarity.

eventually i learned that loving someone does not make them unaccountable for their actions, does not excuse their wrongs. when i learned that, i learned that loving someone was not nearly as good as loving someone and being loved back. because the people who truly love you back, will respect your feelings without you having to beg them to see your pain.

Disclaimer: my hatred of geologists is purely theatrical, but if I did have to kill one for some reason, it would be very easy.

I’d brandish my obsidian knife at them and they’d be compelled to approach. “That’s very cool,” they’d say, confident in their superior strength and endurance from all the rocks they carry around at all times. They’d shower me with very interesting facts about obsidian and hover just out of range of the cutting edge, waiting for me to exhaust myself. “But as it is volcanic glass, it’s very fragile, you see, and isn’t well-suited for use as a weap—” and then I’d hit them with the wooden baseball bat in my other hand, which they would not have noticed because geologists can only see rocks and minerals.

Showed my Geologist dad a picture of the obsidian knife you had and he nearly said this exact thing word for word. I can't believe my own father would fall prey to this. Clearly you know thine enemy

I work too closely with geologists not to have a contingency plan for eliminating them.
