imma need non artists to shut their cuck mouths for a minute and go and pick up a tablet and pump out some digital art like it’s “so easy” and “isnt worth paying for” because yall can clearly do the work yourselves but are choosing not to for some reason… hm.

You gotta love the internet sometimes.

“i worked hard for my money and clearly you didnt work hard to draw. 100$ is too much :(((” this is so sad alexa play despacito

I’m gonna need to see what they’re selling before I’d even comment on something. I know that digital art isn’t easy and that it’s time consuming but at the same time, it’s the detail that goes into it that makes the price. Just doing a character isn’t worth $100. Doing a character with a decent background isn’t worth $100. Doing a character with A HIGH DETAIL background is definitely worth $100. It all depends on the amount of detail that goes into it. Well that and there length of time it takes.

hmmm no. you cannot just generalize pricing like that. and 100$ for a fully detailed background? you’re kidding me right? depending on speed and skill level of course, it can take minimum ~15 hours for that kind of piece. hell thats being generous for the type of quality people expect

100/15 = 6.66$ USD. that’s below minimum wage. it might come as a surprise but people need to eat, and pay bills. yknow, it costs money to live.

and that’s only the average internet freelancer. you get into professional concept work and character design and that can start in the thousands.

and this isnt even accounting for equipment (traditional art supplies are expensive, for example) or revisions/back and forth between customer and artist. youre not buying the piece itself. you’re buying the time and skill put into it, and the work it takes to customize it specifically for you.

100$ is fucking chump change, and it’s a goddamn steal for the kind of quality the average artist on here can put out

Time to go full economics on your ass. First off, Art is a Product. A Commission is like any other thing on the market and bound to the laws of supply and demand and market forces. It’s not a job in that you can expect a fair return. You’re self-employing and selling a product, which means you get a market return. The comment on “It’s less than minimum wage” is meaningless.

Look around on Tumblr, DeviantArt and Twitter. There are a lot of high quality artists who do commissions, high quality commissions, for a lot cheaper than $100. It’s fine that the original artist wants to sell their art for $100. Just… they’re in competition with the rest for that. And, oh, in case you don’t know this, it’s the balance of supply and demand, that determines price, and Demand is extremely powerful. A BUYER actually gets a fair deal of control over the seller, and they determine intrinsic market value. If the buyers aren’t paying $100, they’re not paying $100. Simple as that. As the seller, you can only try to convince them to buy it at your price, but if they’re not they’re not. Yes, the seller has every right to refuse to lower prices, buyer has every right to go to someone else. Maybe the others shouldn’t sell so cheap, but then again, they’re making money that way- they get their jobs lined up and make that cash. If you’re charging too much and don’t? Well, sucks to suck. Yes, that drives down average costs, but that’s the thing- supply is increasing.

Buyers have the rights to negotiate. Sellers have the rights to set their own prices. Buyers have the rights to take business elsewhere.

YOU. ARE. NOT. ENTITLED. TO. ANYTHING.

i love you failed to actually say anything meaningful despite “going full economics”. all of this proves my point; mass undercharging is setting a harmful precedent for the current commission market and leading to a lack of respect. that’s kind of the problem here. also i literally never said anything about artist’s being entitled to buyer’s money so stop arguing with a point i never actually made.

At this point, I just assume (or at least suspect) any man caping for rapists/abusers/etc is also one himself.

Please reblog, this is so important.

Is this foreal?

Yes it’s a real service. I do volunteer work for a rape crisis support service in my city and texting is one of the features we provide as well. But just to boost its credibility, I tried it myself:
