Another 751 unmarked graves were found at a Saskatchewan residential school.

Seven hundred fifty one.

This school, The Marieval Indian Residential School, operated from 1899 to 1997.

It was one of the last residential schools to close in Canada. One of more than 130. 

In case you didn’t know, residential schools were created to “cleanse” the people of Canada. These schools operated from 1831, when the Mohawk Institute Residential School opened, to 1996, when residential schools were finally outlawed.

That is 166 years of cultural genocide.

An estimated 150 000 children attended these schools, and an estimated 6 000 children died at these schools (current records of death are incomplete) 

These children were beaten, sexually abused, even experimented on. They were treated like prisoners, like they were sub-human. 

A child’s likelihood of dying in a residential school was one in twenty-five. In comparison, a Canadian World War 2 soldier’s odds of dying were one in twenty-six. 

I am not Indigenous. I cannot pretend to know how painful this may be. But what I can do is speak out. This inhumane treatment of citizens of Canada must be condemned. 

The government of Canada, and The Catholic Church, must. make. reparations. 

if someone close to you is disabled, you have to take that into account when you go places with them. you have to think about accessibility, fatigue, pain, flare ups, etc because its exhausting and hurtful when people who say they love you dont bother putting the effort in to make sure you ACTUALLY have a good time.

This reminds me of a party I went to last year. I was standing with some friends, chatting, and someone said something that indirectly implied that sexism exists. Some trivial recounting of the basic facts of daily life for most women. Something so mild, so uncontroversial, so mundane that I don’t even remember what it was. 

Suddenly, this man standing on the outskirts of our conversational circle piped up with “actually, I think men are more discriminated against than women these days.”

 All conversation died.

I turned to look at him and he had this smug, insufferable grin on his face, relishing this moment, expecting us to waste our time and energy refuting this ridiculous thing he had just said.

The Devil’s Advocate was among us.

And, in my mind, I saw the next 15+ minutes playing out. The parade of facts and statistics in a vain attempt to defend ourselves, our gender, and to prove that misogyny is real. The glib, snide denials from some shithead who is getting off on our pain and frustration. The Gish Gallop of bullshit that would take a whole evening to properly dismantle. It was depressing and overwhelming. I hated it. I had to kill it before it began.

So I looked him dead in the eye and I said “OK,“ shrugged, and just walked away. 

Nothing I have ever said to another human being has ever been so crushing. As I walked away, I watched the smug grin vanish and confusion and anxiety set in. The rest of the group turned their backs to him and carried on as if he had never spoken - as if he was invisible. He was still staring at me when I walked over to another friend and told her what he had said. I pointed him out for her and made direct eye contact with him while we both laughed.

tl;dr: Don’t feed the troll. Let it perish, cold and hungry, in the wasteland of your indifference. It is weak and you are strong. Live your best life.

i absolutely love how ten’s first season of doctor who introduces torchwood but just mentions it here and there and never actually shows it, but stresses that it’s regarded as this top secret super mysterious organisation with a higher order than the government and more powerful than the doctor himself, just enough to get everyone intrigued, so everyone watching is thinking oohohoho, what’s torchwood??? and then the actual spinoff show gets made and it turns out it’s just a bunch of aggressively depressed and perpetually horny bisexuals who have chinese takeaway tuesdays and occasionally shag aliens

even fucking better, in 2x03 it’s stated that torchwood was set up to combat the threat of the doctor’s presence on earth, and yet in the 21st century, “when everything changes”, its leader is completely infatuated and borderline obsessed with the doctor. captain jack harkness straight up destroyed over one hundred years of work because he got a boner for a tortured pretty boy. icon

I spent a good half day being boggled over the fact that Uncle Iroh from A:TLA’s title was (and probably continued to officially be, among several others) Prince Iroh. Like, no, his official title is “Uncle”. Uncle of the Fire Nation.
