Here’s a pretty comprehensive write-up:
reblog to save a life
NO!!! STOP SPREADING THIS. STOP IT. IT ISNT THIS SIMPLE. THIS ISNT ‘reblog to save a life’ THIS IS PUTTING LIVES AT RISK.
I keep seeing posts like this every month or so, and I’m so sick of you people not listening to diabetics. Switching insulin to a generic brand is dangerous. It isn’t the same as getting ibuprofen instead of motrin or whatever. It genuinely won’t work the same way as the insulin the diabetic in question may have been using for a while. The insulins are made in different ways, using different formulas. Unlike generic over the counter medicines which use the same active ingredients, these insulins are vastly different from their name-brand counterparts; they can use different ingredients and be faster acting or slower acting. This means they will affect people differently, and this can lead to blood sugar fluctuations that can cause serious problems.
I cannot emphasize this enough: Stop telling people to switch to generic insulin except as a very last resort. This can kill if a diabetic switches to it without knowing the risks.
You can present it as an option, but stress that diabetics should talk to their doctors about it and adjust doses carefully. Don’t just tell them to go down to the pharmacy and do it and expect it to work the same way.
I really tired of seeing you people spread this around. Every time we correct you and you ignore us. STOP DOING THIS. It not only risks a diabetic’s safety if they switch without knowing, but it also distracts from the real issue: insulin is vastly overpriced and we need to bring that price down instead of just telling diabetic people to switch to generic. We need affordable good quality insulin for diabetics (which this is not), and telling diabetics to buy this generic insulin instead is not the answer. We need to pressure lawmakers to crack down on big pharma overcharging for insulin, and we need universal healthcare in general.
Sorry that this post is more angry in tone than other posts I may have made, but as I said I’m very, very tired of seeing this same ignorant post being made every month.
