Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life

I'm Jess, a 23 year old Canadian living in England. Someone gave me a piece of paper that says I know physics. I like music and Monty Python. That's pretty much me. "Do as you would be done by and think for yourself" - G.C

Sudbury Facts That I Thought Were Completely Normal Growing Up Until I Got The Internet

by Kallie Berens-Firth

Pictured: Astronaut hunks in Sudbury training for the Apollo 16 mission. NASA photo S-71-39840. USGS Open-File Report 2005-1190, Figure 088a.

There’s a lot of myth surrounding Greater Sudbury. For people who are visiting the city for the first time, a lot of what you may hear may sound too goofy or weird to be true, but to the average Sudburian we are so used to some of these things that they barely even faze us.

There are actually 330 lakes.

Growing up in Sudbury, I thought it was 100% normal to have several lakes within a ten minute walk from my house. Turns out it most definitely isn’t - according to the city’s website, there are 330 lakes over ten hectares in size within the city limits. A whopping 16.5% (601 square kilometres) of the city’s surface area is covered in water.

Astronauts trained here in the 1970s.

In July 1971, astronauts from the Apollo 16 mission carried out geology training exercises here - the area was chosen because of the city’s shatter cone formations. They didn’t end up wearing their suits but the astronauts used their radio equipment to practice for their mission which took place in April 1972. The work NASA did in Sudbury (spanning from 1968-71) is commemorated by a special trail at the Laurentian Conservation area

Thomas Edison was responsible for discovering ore in Falconbridge.

In 1901, Edison visited Sudbury because he was interested in using nickel and cobalt in his electrical equipment. He discovered ore right near the area where Centennial Park is in Falconbridge. However, he got really discouraged by a layer of quicksand, gave up, and returned home to New Jersey.

There are a lot of ghost towns in the area.

Because of all the mining activity happening in Sudbury, settlements were often made and abandoned when a mine was opened or closed. Some of these ghost towns are harder to access than others due to the closure of roads. Greater Sudbury currently the area with the largest number of abandoned communities in Canada - 123 of them.

We’re bigger than Rhode Island.

Hopefully this doesn’t cause as much controversy as John Lennon’s Bigger Than Jesus comment, but it’s true. The total area of Greater Sudbury is 3,201 square kilometres - Rhode Island is only 3,140. Also, I just discovered a few months ago that Rhode Island isn’t even an island. I have a bone to pick with that state apparently.

Archive photos that will make you see Sudbury differently

Since diving into a beautiful bank of archive photography of Sudbury for the curation of the @SudburyTimeMachine Instagram project, I’ve witnessed the city transform before my eyes. Some neighbourhoods have emerged progressively around rails and mines, like Little Italy, others aggressively, like New Sudbury, and others have disappeared completely to make way for other urban and social realities, like Borgia (RIP 1966).

Our urban environment is constantly changing, and thus, changing us along the way. Our urban landscape influences the way we think, interact, and live way more than we think.

Archive photography is a window letting us see how decisions once made have radically transformed our private and public spaces. You notice how a lot has changed. Profit-driven decisions often exhaust and weaken, if not dissolve communities. On the flip side, when these areas are cherished and protected, it gives us a stronger sense of place and the right context to grow roots and flourish. As Jane Jacobs said, “cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”

So voilà. Here are a couple of photos of Sudbury worth seeing and that will make you see Sudbury differently.

1. The New Sudbury Centre, when it first opened in 1957

Before, New Sudbury was a rich farmland. Look at those tiny houses on the horizon!

2. Sudbury had four beautiful main theatres

The century, The Capitol, The Regent, and of course, the only one remaining, The Grand.

3. The Sorrento Motel, corner of Barrydowne and Kingsway

This is where the Keg is today and where the Bianco used to be. Circa 1960.

4. Sudbury’s first hotel and its proprietor

Early 1900s.

8. Laurentian University

Circa 1965. Where’s the Parker?

9. Busy Summer at Bell Park

Either Nothern Lights Festival Boréal or a summer celebrating event. We’ve gotten conflicting reports (email us at timemachine@weliveuphere.com if you know!) Either way, holy shit qu’y avait du monde.

10. Drive right across the tracks from Riverside to Elgin

You can see where the Laughing Buddha is today, top left corner of the picture. Crazy eh? Circa 1960.

11. Amble Scramble

Elm and Durham, 1963.

Special Tumblr Bonus! Check out this great video of the scramble in action.

12. Tramway!

A fancy bunch of Suburians taking the tramway.

13. Hey it’s Café Petit Gâteau’s ancestor!

The building now houses 50 Carleton, a Money Mart and our favourite little bakery.

14. To The Moon and Back

A pretty cool Playground Moon Module that kids used to be able to play at Big Nickel Park circa 1973.

15. The power of beautiful neon signs

Durham St. at night, circa 1960. Death to vinyl signage.
