Every piece of dogshit art makes the world a better place to live. Better to create poorly than not at all.

cannot recommend more putting secrets and hints in your creative work that you dont expect anyone to figure out

act like youve got a ravenous fanbase of a million people poring over every detail, cuz then if nobody figures it out you feel cool n smug knowing something nobody else does, and if someone does figure it out then its like theyve joined a secret society

Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?

Do you love Taylor Swift's Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? Do you wish there was a story written that matches the narrative? Do you like to read? Do you want to give an OG fic writer a chance?

Then have I got a story for you! (Well, actually, several stories....) The Unbreakable series follows Euwenn Gilmore from the moment he is cursed at 17, through his journey of living with the curse and eventually meeting the woman who cursed him in a final battle -- which only one of them can survive. There's a little bit of magic, a few vampires, a swamp fae, and a whole lot of bonding and fun. Oh, and queer characters too.

If you feel like the word count of the main story is too overwhelming, feel free to read some of the smaller stories as teasers before committing to the main story. Please at least share :)

Also, this story is for registered users only (I'm terrified of AI). So consider getting an AO3 account!

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

The left example: ✅✅✅

The right example: ❌❌❌

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

This is a good thing to keep in mind! It is often and unfortunate that a really good fic doesn’t get love because its formatting makes it too difficult to read!

I think I figured out why this happens!

AO3's posting form has two modes: Rich Text and HTML. the vast majority of people write in Rich Text editors, aka any normal word processing software (MS Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, what have you). but when you first open it, the posting form opens in HTML view. if you paste formatted text into HTML view, it erases every piece of formatting, including paragraph spacing.

this is an easy fix. when you go to post your fic, make sure the posting form looks like this:

not like this:

and please spread the word! this is an important piece of computer literacy that nobody is teaching to the new generations and they deserve to know

Oh, if you're posting by copying from tumblr and pasting to AO3, use Rich Text. It'll keep the paragraph spacing. If you don't, you get the jammed up version.

this has been discussed before but reducing female characters to the girlboss braincell holder in the name of combating misogyny in fandom is ironically also a form of misogyny

people love love loooove to go on and on and on about whiteguy #135336843’s internal torment and the nuances of his writing and then when it comes time to talk about women it’s all um actually she can do no wrong and holds the braincell and babysits the boys like a mother hashtag feminism. i hope you fucking blow up

If you can’t think of anything to say about a fic, writers also like to know:

- what time it is

- how long you’ve been reading

- how many chapters you’ve covered in the last 24 hours

- what you were late for because you were reading

- the woeful few hours you have left to sleep

- the emotional outbreaks you’re experiencing

- the inappropriate place you’re having said outbreak

- the general public’s reaction to your outbreak

- how much phone battery you have left

The devastating difference between how much time it takes to write something vs how fast people read it lol

you're falling in the trap!! it will be read by many people, many times, and it will live on in their memories. and maybe no single other human will match you in time spent dedicated to your story, but as a collective we will outlast you. acts of creation only grow when they are shared

This. Writing is not like dinner. It can be consumed many times

Seeing as you’re an experienced author I think it’s safe to assume you’ve tried and tested both methods and could probably give me a fair answer. Should I:

a) continue pestering my friends to read what I wrote because I’m insecure about my art and then be disappointed by their brutal honesty

Or

b) stop doing that and just write for myself because I don’t like criticism

Avatar

What about c) find a group of probably mostly online people who like the kinds of things that you write and understand how to encourage a young writer without the kind of brutal honesty that will make you hide under a table I never write again?

The Zero Comment Challenge is a way for readers to find new stories and reach out to authors they want to encourage.

Every fandom has stories that get lost in the shuffle. Maybe they were posted during a busy time and didn’t get much attention. Maybe the author didn’t tag as effectively as they could have to get their story in front of the audience it was intended for. Maybe the fandom is just really shy so they leave kudos instead of comments.

The Zero Comment Challenge is meant to find those authors and give them some love. Go to the AO3 search and filter by comments, then look at the fics that don’t have any comments at all. Find one that looks interesting to you and let the author know what you thought. They get to meet a new reader and you get to find new fic. Everyone wins!

credit to @polizwrites for originating the idea and @copperbadge  who wrote the first post I can find about it here
