“you just don’t get it, and that’s fine, i don’t expect you to. it’s not like they were carrying me through this relationship in shackles. i was fine until–” she huffs, gesturing in chloe’s direction. “–until this. now... now it’s not that simple. if this was just some weird game you decided to play with me to see if you could fuck with my life, tell me now so we can just stop and move on with our lives.” 

stop and move on. it gets victoria right between the ribs that this is exactly the same conversation they’d had back in the blackwell parking lot. now that feels like decades and seconds ago, and she doesn’t quite know what to do with it. letting out a breath, she lets her head fall back, staring wordlessly up at the ceiling for a long moment. that is, until chloe throws out another childish attempt at a guilt trip. the worst thing is, her reaction to chloe refusing to say it tells her everything she needs to know about how she really feels. frustrated and feeling vulnerable, she sits up straight again, knowing what’s about to come out of her mouth will at best embarrass her and at worst destroy her engagement. 

“i’m not some insecure seventeen year old anymore, chloe. i can’t sit here and do this with you. before the last two weeks i thought that i could settle, that i could swallow not being in love with hugh and just bask in my parents being proud of me for once. but–” victoria barked out a laugh, dropping her head and tucking her hair behind her ear. “–you showed up, ripped off a scab i thought was a scar, and made me fall in love with you. again. so there it is. it’s all out now. hope you’re happy.”

“chloe...” victoria sighs, but the weight doesn’t leave her chest. she smiles faintly when chloe’s knuckles brush her skin, but her hand drops, taking victoria’s small smile with it. of course chloe doesn’t get it, that it’s not just about the money but about her parents, hugh’s parents, how embarrassed both families will be if she breaks things off now. but the reality is victoria had postponed going back to her parents’ home every day for the last two weeks, always drawing out her goodbyes to chloe as much as she could. 

“it’s... really, really complicated. there’s a lot of moving parts, it’s not just–my parents are so happy about it.” and that’s the truth of it. they’re finally happy with her, she’s finally stepping up to their plans, meeting their expectations, making them proud. and still, she knows in her gut that’s where it ends. hugh’s not even a decent person, he gives her the third degree every time she comes home past when he thinks she should, calls and texts constantly, demanding to know where she is. she’s scared of him, but it has to all be in her head. shaking it off, she blinks, barely hearing chloe’s question, but it still startles and offends her. 

“why?” even caught off guard, victoria has always been quick on her feet. “do you love me? because that’s the only thing that would justify that being any of your business.”
