Liz rubbed her forehead in a vain attempt to stop the ache that continued to grow. "I can't think of anyone who needs to prove themselves to Martok less. She impressed that man before she was even out of training pants. Does she suppose he spends a lot of time at children's tea parties, letting them put bows in his hair? What would she possibly have left to prove?"

Reg didn't know, she was aware. But, gods, her eldest daughter was absolutely baffling sometimes. She was also aware Reg would be the first to point out who she got that from, but as far as she could remember, Liz was certain she'd never attacked a couch with a Bat'leth to impress any Klingons. She had usually stuck with fighting them hand-to-hand, like a sensible person.

"And Ollie? He's not actually been dumped or rejected, just discovered a crush is already involved elsewhere? Have I got that right?" Sofia may have inherited her temper and impulsiveness, but Oliver had gotten all of his father's tendency toward the dramatic.

The image of Martok with the bows in his hair made Reg smile, but only for a moment -- a particularly aggressive noise from Sof interrupted him. "No, I think there's some bat'leth tournament coming up. She wants to win it. I told her the rules say you have to be an adult to enter, and then... the couch became her mortal enemy."

The music from Ollie's room died out for a minute, then switched to another song, just as loud and depressing. "And yes. It's that Nicolas boy he's been talking about for a month."

"All right, well I am rather fond of having a couch that's still in one piece. So leaving her to destroy it seems like a bad idea. It may be time to redirect her energy." She tried very hard not to sound like she was giving obvious orders, especially since there were few ways to handle four children with vastly different ideas about what fun looked like alone. But sometimes, she thought, it was nice to be offered solutions instead of being handed problems. "Why don't you take her to the holosuites where she can get in some actual practice against opponents less inclined to just sit there? She'll never win a tournament if she expects to fight someone as poorly equipped as a sofa. And, if Quark is being his usual unhelpful self, she can always use him as a practice dummy."

The twins, fortunately, were fairly self sufficient. With notes to enter into their ongoing research on human behaviour (ie. the family's normal chaos), chances were good that they wouldn't emerge from their room until dinner was on the table. And that only left Oliver.

"I'll go and talk to Ollie. See if I can't, at least, get him to find something slightly less depressing... and loud, to listen to." Liz didn't look terribly hopeful about that. Ollie's heartaches had only gotten more dramatic with the onset of puberty. Where once a fuzzy blanket, a cup of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows, and a good cuddle could cure all of his ills, now it was a great deal of the most depressing music in the quadrant played on repeat for a week at minimum.

Liz blinked once slowly and took a deep breath, trying to process all of that.

"Reg," she started slowly. "My love, my heart, light of my life... I have been gone for less than an hour."

Not that there was any amount of time short enough to feel safe in the belief that her family hadn't managed to fall into complete chaos. Reg would, certainly, insist they got that from her. Liz was less certain after being married to him for a long time.

"Girls," she turned her attention to Charlotte and Victoria. "Go finish writing up your notes in your own room. Subjects aware they're under observation will alter your test results. Everyone knows that."

"Is there any particular reason Sof is trying to kill the couch?" Liz looked back at Reg, feeling a headache blooming behind her eyes.

The twins watched them eerily for a few moments, then scurried away to their room. Lord only knew what weird things they had jotted down into their PADDs about the rest of the family.

"Well she was trying to kill the cat first. I made her stop. She just said something about proving herself to General Martok. Everything else has been Klingon grunting." He offered his wife a pained little smile.

"So," Reg began, his voice barely audible over the shouts and grunts of their daughter in the next room, and what sounded like breakup music blaring from behind Ollie's closed door. "Sof is attacking the couch with her bat'leth. Ollie is pouting in his room because the boy he likes is already dating someone. And the twins are..." He trailed off, turning to look at them huddled together in the corner, typing hurriedly away into a PADD. "...I think they're taking notes on us for future study."

With that, he stepped forward to give Liz a quick kiss on the cheek. "Welcome home. Love you. Sorry, should have started with that."
