Some proof that there ARE elected officials out there, like Vice Mayor Sean Cummings in Oklahoma, who are standing up for LGBTQ+ youth like Nex Benedict and calling out the fact that our words and rhetoric DO matter.

[Context: In this video, Sean Cummings is seen speaking to Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters referring to the death of student Nex Benedict].

Forget unrequited love, you know what's really tragic? requited love but they're doomed by the narrative. It doesn't matter that they love each other, it doesn't matter how hard they love, they were doomed from the start.

I posted similar thoughts on another thread, but I'm absolutely gutted by Larian's choice to have Minthara break up with you if you reject Bhaal. Minthara loves power, but the one price she won't pay for it is her own free will. I'd argue that extends to Durge, her lover, the person who saved her "from [being lost to] madness and blood", the person who rescued her from Moonrise when "I didn't think anyone would come for me".

When Durge inquires whether Minthara empathizes with Ketheric, she says, "It is a sharp mind that empathizes with others, not a soft heart". She and the Narrator outright state that Minthara is fiercely loyal and genuinely loves Durge. She wouldn't want her lover, the person who was there for her when no one else was, literally the only person she trusts now that she's abandoned (and been abandoned!!!) by Lolth and the Absolute, to become the puppet of a chaotic evil murder god.

I can come up with a hundred reasons why, but to name a few: One: it's risky. Bhaal is very much Chaotic Evil, and although Minthara is undeniably horny for you when she finds out you're a Bhaalspawn (and thus the ultimate predator), she also states that control is paramount. She doesn't commit violence for violence's sake, she does it "to teach [those who have wronged me] not to anger me again". Violence has purpose. Bhaal's violence rarely does. Two: Dealing with the gods comes with strings attached. She literally saw what being a servant of Myrkul did to Ketheric and views him as a cautionary tale. Sure, Bhaal can provide immense power to his children, but if Durge said, "Hey now, I don't want to be in the position he was in... or the position you were in with the whole Absolute charade, either," I feel like Minthara would take those concerns seriously! Three: Orin. Sure, she's dead now, and Durge killed her -- but she is associated with Bhaal. Are you telling me that Minthara is going to throw a fit over rejecting Daddy's approval after everything Orin did in his name? After all the trauma Minthara endured at Orin's hands? She's much more logical than emotional, but I can't see her completely ignoring the connection between Orin and Bhaal. That association has to fucking hurt. If I were her, I'd want to wipe my hands of the whole fucking family after how they wronged me, you know? Plus, BHAAL WAS BEHIND THE ABSOLUTE, WHICH MIND CONTROLLED HER. So he isn't just this outside player she can change her mind on and suddenly start admiring.

My comment is getting long, but I'm just so, so hurt by this. This is my favorite game of all time, and my favorite way to play it was just ruined. I don't see why our Durge can't remind Minthara of her own stated principles with a persuasion check, at least? She obviously loves them and is loyal to them by that point in the game. Why wouldn't she even give them a chance to share their thoughts?

Part of the reason it hurts so bad is that Larian did an excellent job of portraying Minthara as a whole person. She's evil, sure, depending on how you define evil. But she's not thoughtlessly evil. Her decisions are all logical and, in her mind, beneficial to her. She is often cruel, but usually to protect herself or to gain some advantage, because she fears being hurt by a world she mistrusts entirely. Having her just automatically approve of the "evil" choice (accepting Bhaal's gift) simply because it's "evil" and she is "evil" and "evil" characters should approve of "evil" things completely ignores the fullness and richness of her character up to that point.

Y'know when Minthara said "I came to Moonrise with a retinue of warriors and assassin - the best House Baenre had to offer." it really sounds like the Baenre sent her out to lead a full-force surface raid to take the (filthy surface dwellers who dared to preach not of Lolth in Menzoberranzan) cult of the Absolute down.

Such resources and task are not to be taken lightly as it is done in the name of Lolth... And then she fucks it all up. Not only did Moonrise stand but also all of her men are either dead or converted.

Her entire life got turned upside down. From an esteemed commander who led such campaign to being forsaken by her one and only goddess, the ever-present presence in every Underdark drow's life - Lolth. Her Matron's wrath is certain, she cannot go home, plus the threat of the shapeshifting Orin dials up the paranoia to a 10. She's between a rock and a hard place.

So when I read about people saying Minthara's really nice for a drow I mean... She basically lost everything and is probably at one of the lowest points in her life. And if you romanced her at the goblin party, for a moment, suddenly it was fine. Her mind was clear again, her lover's embrace was a safe haven. Conquered the grove, the first win in days. Tav was the only good thing happened to her so far since she set foot on the strange world of the surface. The only friend and trusted ally (and lover) she's got. Company that well deserve civil conversations and more.

She knows how she's perceived: drow, not trustworthy, not "good"; a woman stripped of all her noble titles - an exile - you're better off marrying the Duke's son than her (she tells Tav this if you break up with her for Wyll).

Drow uses one another to fulfil their ambitions, then discards of their allies like they were nothing. And yet, you - a stranger who has all the reason not to trust her, keep her safe, near, promise and deliver the promise of vengeance for her - killing Orin. You don't have to promise her anything, yet you deliver.

The kind of security and certainty Tav (as both a friend and a lover) gives her is probably nothing she has ever experienced during her entire life in the Underdark. Being the intense and insane person she is, giving her 1000% in terms of dedication and loyalty to Tav is honestly fitting in my opinion.

Take in the fact that she was abandoned by two gods at this point (Lolth and the Absolute - albeit a false one), perhaps subconsciously giving her all was to not being abandoned again.

And that makes turning her away after learning that she was brainwashed by the Absolute, one of the cruellest decisions one can make in game.

Simply flat out killing her like any other enemies, not knowing that she was a woman brainwashed and lost everything puts her up there as one of the more tragic characters in game.

“It is only because of you that I did not meet the same fate as Orin, lost to madness and blood. If you had killed me when we first met, I would have been just one more casualty of your crusade against the Absolute… and nobody would remember me.” -Minthara

This took 3 weeks to make. This is the best project I have done in a very long time. I normally don’t like a lot of my work because I always find something about them. I love Minthara and Karlach from BG3 so much. Down to their writing and their witty ways. I hope this painting captures what this character means to me. I really hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. I will be posting it on twitter, TikTok and facebook. Thank you all so much for your love and support everyone. I truly can’t thank you all enough.

The way Final Fantasy 14 explores the themes and lore of its deities and other bosses through the song lyrics in their boss music is very underrated tbh. It's one of the best aspects of the game to me, yet I don't see it praised as much as other things.

And there's such variety, too. Menphina's theme is an upbeat song that explores how the world's cat people find safety and comfort in worshipping the moon. Sophia's theme is a sad parable that shows how the goddess' idea of balance is harsh and inhumane. Lakshmi spends her song trying to seduce you into accepting her ideology of blissful sloth. Shiva mourns her own plight. Suzaku sings of lost love. Athena sings about how she is the shit and she's gonna kill you.

It's all just really great.
