JK Rowling seriously never knows when to stop. She is persistent in her ignorance and it is horrible to witness. She built a world - a universe, where people found themselves, sometimes in their darkest moments, and now, has been blinded by her own lack of education.
We can’t escape the fact, that she wrote Harry Potter. We all know that, and we understand that.
However, I’ve seen people on Tiktok, Twitter, saying that now, we should all turn ours back on that universe, like it never existed. I wish it were that easy, I do, but it isn’t. Harry Potter is loved, across the globe. Either from those who’ve only read the books, or watched the movies, or both.
The love that surrounds it, is strong.
The story of Harry Potter, saved me, since I was little, and it’s a story I revisit, when I’m down. I struggled reading, growing up, thanks to developmental difficulties and sight issues, so I did rely on the movies, more than the books, for a long while. I read them after the movie series ended, so much later on than the majority of the fandom. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter, how you consume them, either way, it does feel tainted, given everything JK Rowling has said and done.
I don’t think, people who love this universe, and need it, should be shunned for it. It’s been around for over twenty years, and it’s got a mind of its own. The fandom outgrew the creation, that is clear. From fanfiction, to cosplay, there are millions of way to enjoy this universe, without endorsing her. You can purchase unlicensed merch, from sites like Etsy etc
I do believe it would be impossible, for everybody, who have committed their love to this universe, should be blamed, when they can’t let go of it. JK doesn’t own our experiences, the joy we feel, for this story.
It might never feel the same again, but please, take care of yourself, you are valid, and she cannot take away your experience.
Remember these wise words of Daniel Radcliffe:
“I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.”
