Fandom Problem #8286:

Dear fanfic writers: I love you. You are the heart and soul of fandom. But please consider glossing over your fics and making some quick edits before posting them and I will love you even more.

  • When writing primarily from the POV of a specific character, no unannounced mid-paragraph POV shifts! It throws the reader off. You don't need to have every character's perspective of a scene from their point of view. Convey that information through your focal character instead, or... maybe they're hiding what they're really thinking.
  • Make a paragraph break when the scene, place, time, or character changes, or when a sudden event occurs.
  • Grammar checkers are usually free and help a lot with punctuation (usually American English, and some of them support a few other languages but unfortunately this field appears to be sorely lacking). It truly makes reading fic that much more enjoyable.
  • Don't constantly use epithets!!! Occasional ones are ok but "The blond" "The brunet" "The war criminal" every single sentence gets old real fast, and referring to characters by their pronouns when the speaker is obvious— or using actual names when it's not— are MUCH better ways to convey character interaction without needing to remind the reader of their identity 24/7.
  • more of a nitpick coz imo it truly does not matter that much but the M-dash (—) is used for sudden cutoffs— or additional information— mid-sentence, the N-dash is used for durations like 4:00–5:00, and the hyphen is used for joined words— like cat-burglary. Also used for durations.
