For the last goddamn time...

"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."

That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.

It does NOT mean

  • That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing
  • That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)
  • That you need to kill off characters (??? what)
  • That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones
  • That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to

The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.

The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.

Good grief....

Also, you don't have to like, delete it from existence. Keep a second document full of the Darlings. You never know when you'll need it later.

we need civil partnerships for siblings and I’m not joking

the desire to file taxes jointly =/= the desire to screw each other

a pair of identical twins who live in the same house should be allowed to share social security benefits and they shouldn’t have to pay inheritance taxes

i think it’s reasonable to want to extend your health insurance to your own flesh-and-blood that lives in your home. I mean, hypothetically, I could just marry a random person I met last week and get all of those sweet, sweet legal and financial benefits, but as of now, in the US, the law makes it impossible for a pair of siblings to contribute to each other’s IRAs, and I think that’s a travesty

just my wacky, controversial opinion

Wait are we called mammals after mammary glands? Are mammals named after tits???

ARE WE THE BOOBS CLASS?

Avatar
foone

We are. And we also named our galaxy after boob juice. Twice.

"milky way" is obviously milk, but the hidden part is that "galaxy" comes from the Greek γάλα (gála), meaning "milk".

It's the tit-goo path tit-goo-thing. We are very, very breast focused as a species.

Eukaryote (good-kernels) as opposed to prokaryotes(before-kernels). We are the Domain of Fortunate Cellular Nuclei.

Animalia (of the anima.) we are in the Kingdom of the Breathing, or the Air-Souled.

Of the Phylum (tribe or clan) Chordata (having a string). We are the Clan of the String, referencing the spinal cord.

Class Mammalia, of course. the division of the titties.

Order Primate, which is a bit stuck-up, but I suppose the people doing the naming get to pick. Primate is of course primary, or First/Highest. Interestingly, this is in the sense of it being a job; a primate is a bishop of Christianity. This is reflected in the medieval Scala Naturae, where “primate” is an office held by the “natural” or divinely appointed top being in each tier of existence. Seraphim are the primate angels; humans are the primate people; lions are the primate animals; oak trees are the primate plants; and diamonds are the primate minerals. Translating the intent here, we are the Order of Ordained Authority, which we share with other natural bosses such as lemurs.

Depending how you want to do this, we are also suborder Haplorhini, the dry-nosed. This is separated from wet-nosed apes.

After this we land in the repetition of Homina-homina-homina-homina where there are several classes that drill down ever further, all of them rooted in “hominid.” Everyone knows homo is “man, human” but the root of why it’s “man” is because it is first “earth”. Human means “earthling”, and is rooted in “not-divine.” We are the family, subfamily, tribe and genus of earthlings.

By the time you get to species we are very lonely indeed, with only one species in our genus. This is actually a terrifically lonely place, and in this we are “sapiens.” This doesn’t mean just “wise” but “being wise,” which is more of a duty than a descriptor.

When you put it in context: Domain of Fortunate Nuclei, Kingdom of the Air-Souled, Clan of the String, Class of Milky Boobs, Order of the Bosses, Family of Earthlings, Tribe of Earthlings, People of Earth, Earthlings, Thinking Earthlings.

The point of taxonomy does seem to be making oneself a box that excludes all others in order to feel properly lonely and alone in it; one’s place in the world defined until one is alone. however, zooming out a bit, it does make for some stirring company.

maybe it’s not “we need to teach media literacy in schools” but maybe “we need to make school less insufferable”

ENGLISH CLASS IS NOT THE SAME AS MEDIA LITERACY! ENGLISH CLASS IS IMPORTANT BUT IT IS NOT THE SAME THING.

You would think the "I paid attention in English Class" crowd would check the definitions their basic terms.

English class class is about learning to interpret the written word and craft persuasive written, and sometimes spoken, arguments. It is usually focused on fiction, sometimes with the inclusion of literary nonfiction. These are vital skills. Studying language and literature are important both on their own and to media literacy.

BUT Media literacy is about understanding news media and nonfiction; It's about not just the words on the page but their broader sources and contexts.

Here are some infographics I found during a rudimentary Google search, for people who understand or are more likely to stop and read them.

Media literacy skills include things like

  • Identifying reliable news outlets and sources
  • Recognizing journalistic biases, including the ways that images, videos, and statistics can be manipulated without being technically inaccurate
  • Learning to independently verify information
  • How to responsibly share news information across social media, especially about breaking news events where facts are difficult to verify
  • How to separate actual scientific findings from generalized headlines, even the ones that aren't deliberately misleading click bait
  • How to recognize digitally manipulated and AI content
  • Understanding libel laws (WHY DOES THIS HEADLINE SAY "ALLEGED?")
  • Understanding journalistic ethics (including social media ethics)
  • The role of public relations firms in influencing media (my shock when I started doing PR for Occupy and discovered that websites would just publish our press releases verbatim. If they'll do that for us, you think they're not doing it for Monsanto, too?)
  • And like a ton of other stuff

Ideally, it's synthesizing skills you should pick up from English, History, Science, Math, and more. We live in a hyper-media-saturated world. We are constantly bombarded by images, videos, audio, and text full of information that's attempting to influence us. That's what "being on-line" is. The skills to sort through and evaluate it need to be taught, practiced, and regularly honed throughout life. Teaching media literacy needs to start as soon as kids are old enough to have unsupervised screen time. If you leave them alone with youtube, you need to teach them how to recognize fact from fiction.

So LIBRARY class was media literary class. Makes sense.
