eddie assuming steve doesn't really have a sense of humor since he takes things more literally--also causing him to be the butt of the joke a lot of the time when hanging with the kids. sure he's sarcastic, but eddie wouldn't say steve's highlighted characteristic is being humorous. then, after hanging around steve more, only the two of them, it is unexpectedly revealed to eddie that steve has a weird fucking sense of humor when steve joins eddie at doing shadow puppets--his voice acting being surprisingly good? which is very endearing to eddie because steve harrington actually being a weird dude all along isn't something he thought was possible. eddie regrets his assumption because steve is hilarious, steve just needed some time to be comfortable enough to crack jokes. it also makes eddie ticked off because how is he both gorgeous and strange, and how does he stop himself from wanting to learn how to bake a whole bakery's worth of sweets for this guy?

eddie learns how to bake peach cobbler for steve after steve hands eddie a folded up piece of paper with a comical drawing by steve of a cat laying on its back with its limbs spread out on the ground as it cries a puddle of tears.

thinking about steve taking a handful of dates to a hip new cafe in town and one of the employees who somehow always gets the shifts while this guy is here gets front row seats to his dates going to complete shit until one day he's sitting at his usual spot with his back-from-the-dead infamous guy friend eddie munson. at this point that one employee has spread the tale of harrington's sad dating life among the other workers so they're all confused on why he's breaking the streak of dates to only bring along a friend. but while keeping their eye on them, they're like. oh. bc harrington is giggling and his cheeks are pink, acting nothing like he did in those other dates. the streak isn't broken and his dating life just might be going...good? like it's not just a date with this guy i have a crush on they're like fully in love with each other

Hopper first properly meets Steve Harrington when he was only 12 years old. Hopper was patrolling in the afternoon, like he does every afternoon, every morning and every night because you know, he didn’t have anything else to do after moving back to Hawkins after his daughter died. He drowned himself with work, cigarettes and alcohol.

When first sees Steve, he doesn’t even know he was the Harrington’s sole heir. He’s just a kid, a kid too small for his age, and Hopper has to reassure himself that maybe this kid just doesn’t eat enough, it doesn’t mean he’s sick. The kid was carrying planks of woods, too long and too heavy for his frame, hauling it on the side of the street.

Hopper takes pity at the kid and slows down beside him, opening his passenger window.

“Hey, kid. Need help?” The kid looks at him apprehensively. Like no ones ever offered to help him, like he’s actually been alone his whole life.

“I don’t need help.” The kid scoffs back, panting a bit as he carries the wood with struggle.

“Okay? You sure about that?” He hums, nodding, not even sparing him a glance.

“You should bring a wagon with you.” The kid stops on his tracks, realizing that he could have bought a wagon to ease his struggle.

“Thank you, Sir.” He courtly answers before marching to his destination.

Steve tries to get the bloodstains out of the original vest and, while he succeeds, it ruins the material. It ends up with pale, thin splotches and holes from the scrubbing. So Steve spends hours, days, weeks, carefully cutting the stitching, carefully taking the patches off the original vest. He buys a new one and sews them on. He is so careful to make it exactly the same.

When he gives back the new vest with the old patches, Eddies a little confused. Not just because there's no bloodstains anymore, but it doesn't have the ink or coffee stains. It doesn't have the weird ties from when he stitched one of the patches wrong.

Steve tries to play it off, act casual, but Eddie can see how much work Steve must have put into it. It's so obvious to him and he spends just as long trying to figure Steve out, trying to figure out the best thing he can do in return. He doesn't want it to be something quick and easy, he wants Steve to understand that he cares just as much about him. He wants to make him feel special too.
