Wanted to put a wild writing tip out there for those who get stuck transitioning a scene in their head onto paper: write in the dark.

It sounds silly, but if you don’t look at what you’re writing while you write, it’s much easier to let the scene flow onto paper, because you aren’t being distracted by typos or sentence clarity or trying to reread what you’ve already put out there. It will read like garbage the first time around, and need lots of revision, but so far I’ve found nothing more effective for getting a first draft hammered into physical existence.

(Writing while in a dimly lit room with the computer screen brightness turned down to nothing and some instrumental epic music seems to help keep me in a daydreamy mood, too, so it’s easier to replay the mental scene I want to explain in words.)

This totally works for me too, but I just close my eyes and touch type. :)

Switch your writing tool on your monitor to Dark mode with a dark background and white words. Same thing.

If this method helps you or you want to try something like it, try www.ilys.com/welcome. It makes you write one letter at a time until you reach your set word goal. No editing or reviewing until you reach that goal! I swear by it! And the basic version is free!

Something I’ve done is change my font to a super curly, compressed cursive that I can’t read, and turn off spell check. I like to see the progress I’m making because it keeps my brain happy, and it prevents me from editing as I go. Only forward motion!

It’s the same concept as the other methods above, but with the added pleasure brought on by seeing how much you’ve done so far.

I’ve used something called Fighters Block. http://cerey.github.io/fighters-block/#

It’s basically you set a goal and have to reach it while your little person is fighting a monster. You can’t go back and edit or anything like that. It’s got me through some ‘just get this down’ times
