Walking down the street, Y/N was excited to be back in the city. She had just gotten the keys to her new place. Being away from where she grew up was torture. She missed her friends and family. She even missed simple stupid things like riding the bus, even though she hadn’t ridden the bus in years. She had missed looking out the window and watching the world go by. She hadn’t felt this warm since the last time she visited from med-school. She visited her parents for Christmas, checking up on them and making sure they were ok. That was unneeded though.
“ I’ll take care of them,” Florian said while dropping her at the airport. It had been a rough week of arguing with him and trying to make him understand that she needed to do this for herself and her career. He didn’t care about any of that. As far as he was concerned she didn’t need a career. He was there to take care of her and as long as he was there, she was fine.
That was four years ago. They kept in touch through the first year, but as time went on the two of them both got busy and eventually just stopped talking. He tried his best to keep in touch with her. He was convinced that she would come back home. But it never happened.
She has been to the apartment once before. She and a few friends had gone to clean it up. They giggled and caught up after opening a bottle of champagne, Afterwards. She was happy to see her friends again. Especially Lyla who happens to be with one of Florian’s guys. After talking about their relationship, Florian comes up. “Have you seen him yet?” She asked before taking a sip from her glass.
“NO!?” Another friend asked.
“You’ve been here for 3 months, Y/N. How haven’t you called him yet?”
“I- I don’t know. I’ve been trying to get settled and shit.” Y/n said. Truth was, she was scared. What would she say to him? What would he say to her? What if he has moved on?.
“He misses you. He’ll be happy to see you.”
Y/N continued to sleep at her parent’s house while She went shopping for furniture and got her things together. She had been looking all day and could not find anything that she liked. She did buy some house toiletries and necessities that she wanted to get set up before going back to her parent’s house. So there she was walking up to her building.
She unlocked her front door and stepped in before kicking off her shoes. She made her way to the kitchen and sat the bags down onto the counter. She took a deep breath. She had been running around all day and was quite tired. Her goal was to get this over with as quickly as possible. She opened the fridge to put a few things inside and froze in confusion. When she last opened this fridge, there were only a few water bottles, a leftover cheese Danish from Starbucks, and the half-empty bottle of champagne from the night before. Now though, as she looked into the open fridge and freezer, it was full. The colors of the different fruits and vegetables brightened under the bulb in the fridge. Drinks sat in orderly lines that lead to the back wall of the cold space. Her first thought was to panic. “Am I..in the right apartment?” she asked herself aloud. She went to the front door to step out and check the door number. After seeing the “26” of her door number she pauses in confusion. What the hell was going on?
Then suddenly she hears a low voice coming from inside the apartment. She couldn’t hear what they were saying but she could tell that it was a man. She would have called the leasing office right then and there but her phone was inside with the rest of her things.
Y/N slowly walked back inside and grabbed her purse and phone, but right before leaving the kitchen, she heard the mysterious voice laugh. That laugh. She knew that laugh from anywhere. Deep and husky. warm.
She walked slowly and quietly to her living room. There was a chance that it wouldn’t be who she thought it was so she had to stay invisible. But she was pretty loud when she first came in. The slam of the door and the rustling of the bags. Did they know she was there already?
She crossed through the dining room and peered into the empty living room, but it wasn’t so empty anymore.
