Giant armadillos, predictably, dig giant burrows, which average 35 centimeters in diameter.  These massive burrows have proven of vital importance to other local species, serving as dens, hiding places, shelter from heat or rain, and feeding grounds.  Over two dozen other species have been found using the giant armadillo’s abandoned burrows, including rare animals like the short-eared dog.  Because it alters the local ecosystem in a way that benefits other species, the giant armadillo is considered an ecosystem engineer, and its existence is considered vital for the other animals in the area.

The falanouc (Eupleres goudotii) is a mongoose like animal native to Madagascar, making it a member of the family Eupleridae. It has unique dentition with flattened canines and premolars that curve backward, thought to be attributed to its diet of soft bodied invertebrates like worms, slugs, and grubs. Falanoucs live in lowland rainforests and it is unknown whether they are nocturnal or diurnal due to their rarity.

Oddly among similar mammals, the young of falanoucs gain independence quickly. They are born with open eyes, and join their mother on foraging excursions in their second day of life and are weaned within nine weeks, becoming fully independent shortly thereafter.

Stakkholtsgjá Canyon is a beautiful natural wonder near Þórsmörk in the Icelandic Highland. From the entrance of the canyon, it is surrounded by high and straight one hundred meters high palagonite cliffs.

Once inside the canyon you will experience a remarkable peace that embraces your thoughts. It is an exotic place as the canyon narrows, and you approach the bottom, turning into a very high cave open at the top, at the end of your track. In the cave, the water falls like a dreamlike shower with both light and drizzle falling on your face as you look up
