Tumbling back into my writing obsession!

@bewitchingredhead36 / bewitchingredhead36.tumblr.com

Hi! After taking a long break from fanfic and writing, I'm baaaack! And I'm every bit as consumed with this world as I was in my "youth!" I'm still into my OTP, Mac & Dick from Veronica Mars--I'll always be slightly MaDi obsessed. However, I'm also a big believer in broadening my ships and fandoms. The pop culture landscape is vast, my friends.

Writing Tips
Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”

This is a great summary of the rules. Very helpful!!

2022 Fanfiction Reading Challenge

June 2022 Stats

Well, my friends. June was as crazy as I thought it would be. Aside from the whole horrible state of *gestures at everything*, the Salmon fam moved out of our house and into a hotel for a MONTH - right in time for the HS graduation of my middle son (and our fun impromptu grad trip to Los Angeles and my sunburn from hell). Thankfully, there are only SIX more sleeps until I’m in my brand new house. I have missed my own bed and I never thought I would say this - but I miss eating food I made myself in my own kitchen. You know how they say that adulthood is basically complaining about what to make for dinner every night until you die? Well eating out every night doesn’t change the fact that you still have to decide at which restaurant to eat… it’s a never ending problem (and an expensive one).

ANYWAY - enough about my real life. Let’s talk fic because we all need a little brightness in our lives right now because *gestures at everything* I’m JUST shy of 10 million words read and I’m just over halfway through the year. My goal of +20 mill for the year *might* be within reach.

Pairings were fun this month. I read 10 new ships (some highlights were Eddie/Chrissy from Stranger Things, Phoenix/Bob from Top Gun: Maverick, and even a Ted/Rebecca from Ted Lasso), I also read some of YOUR favourites (from your bookmarks on Ao3) - how else would I have found a heartbreakingly angsty Stevie/Alexis (Schitt’s Creek) fic if it weren’t for you? So thank you!

I’m still working on my Hard (72/88) and Extreme(35/65) challenges. There are several tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge that deal with minorities. Do any of you currently have favourite stories with a minority (any minority) as a main character that you can direct me to?

Here are some of my favourite reads and rereads for this month. I hope you will read them and leave lots of loving reviews to let these awesome authors know how much you appreciate them

-

Tumblr Meet Cute (2 fic series - T) by Toryb - Tory wrote this one several years ago and it was SO fun to revisit. Betty meets Jughead on tumblr - and they fall in love and then meet in person and it’s the sweetest thing ever. I was feeling nostalgic for Bughead fandom fluffiness and this fit the bit. Fellow Buggies - if you haven’t read these two one-shots yet, you need to. DO IT!

let’s make some music (fuck all of the bullshit) by @feelavalanche (2/2 - E) - My girl wrote this one - and I am a SUCKER for Musician AUs. Fez and Lexi are both singers with grammy nominated albums and they are SO CUTE together.

only good things happen here by @sweetsoundsofignorance (6/6 - E) - HELLO DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND! Okay, so I had a lot of feelings while I read this one. It was dark. SO dark. But the final chapter was SO FREAKING cathartic! This fic is canon-divergent at the ‘Key Party’ and includes a very dark Betty who does dark things for good reasons? It was both hard and wonderful to read. I don’t know how to explain it - but I think you should read it if you like morally grey (or morally black) characters and character motivation.

Postcode Envy by @bewitchingredhead36 (33/33 - E) - I started reading this Veronica Mars fic in 2014 on ff.net - and there was a big break and then the lovely author started posting chapters again 2022 (thankfully I was subscribed so I got the notification) and it was finally finished in June. The premise is - Cindy Mackenzie is hit in the head with a baseball and wakes up back in high school - but not as Cindy Mackenzie, but as Madison Sinclair (as if she wasn’t switched at birth at all) - but she remembers Veronica and Cassidy and Dick and Logan and everyone.

-

Enjoy the recs - and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and happy July.

Thanks for the rec, @jandjsalmon! I'll have to check out the other fics on here, too. I'm always looking for new reading material, especially in the summer heat.

I got a crazy little idea for a fic back in May 2014. I remember I was getting ready for work and the song Royals by Lorde (a big hit back then) came on the radio. I was singing along (badly!) and suddenly the line ‘no postcode envy,’ hit me hard! I had an image of Mac waking up as Madison Sinclair and not knowing the how’s or why’s. The plot bunny hit me hard! I wrote the first couple of chapters and posted the first chapter on June 6th, 2014. I uploaded updates furiously up until April 2016, but then...Crickets. The muse left me. Life intervened in brutal ways. Loss of loved ones..Chronic pain...Doubt in my writing abilities...Writing became a chore, not a labor of love, and probably 747 other reasons.  Fast forward to 2021, and the pause button on life that was tripped by Covid. The writing bug bit me again...Hard! One summer day I sat down one day with the vague idea of finishing Postcode Envy (finally!), but unsure if I had it in me. As I continued plugging away I fell in love again with writing. It was what was missing in my soul, the creative outlet that writing gives me. I love living in my head, and trying to capture those little movie scenes onto paper. It’s a little bit of control in a world that often feels out of control, and it’s what I didn’t know I needed.  Six months later I had 8 new chapters of Postcode Envy written. On January 2022 I started posting them, and now (today!) I finally posted the last ever chapter of Postcode Envy, exactly 8 years to the day that I started posting it. So, almost 200K words later, my little labor of love is finally done and I’m grateful to the muse for not totally abandoning my fanfic writing self!

some fun writer things to do instead of writing

  • make a playlist for your character
  • make picrews of them
  • draw them
  • have two characters play Twenty Questions
  • make a travel brochure for your setting
  • pretend to be your character and play some personality quizzes
  • from MBTI, Enneagram to “What colour am i” and silly quizzes
  • interview your character
  • give them an aesthetic
  • make moodboards for them
  • or Pinterest board
  • daydream about them
  • or imagine scenarios
  • assign three things that remind you of them, for example, A is the day and B is the night so when A falls, B rises and they are hardly together
  • imagine them having tumblr. what would they blog about?
  • make incorrect quotes about them
  • and most importantly, enjoy

Some of these I'd call productive procrastination, which is more wholesome than 90% of the rest of the procrastination I'm guilty of!

reminders for writers.

  • nobody gives a crap if something is overdone in fiction. what they really care about is the execution
  • having a bad day of writing does not make you a bad writer
  • tropes ≠ clichés. if someone tells you it's wrong to use tropes, disregard the advice
  • writing in your second or third language isn’t always easy. you’re doing great
  • writing advice = tools. not rules. you’re not meant to follow every advice you read about on the internet. learn the rules so you know which ones to break
  • every writer is capable of writing a captivating story, but your story might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s ok. there will still be people out there who’ll adore it
  • it’s ok to not excel at every genre! you can write things because you think it’s fun, doesn’t always have to be a matter of writing something because you’re good at it. it’s ok to explore (and it helps you improve as a writer!)

I needed this today, but I'm reblogging it for anyone else who needed this today. Or any day!

Reblog the writers’ fortune cookie for luck!

Guys I reblogged this and then wrote an 8000 word story I didn’t even have a solid plan for. Reblog this shit.

I wish all fortune cookies had fortunes like this! Mine are usually blank, or just banal! Hmmm! Not sure that bodes well for me...

Tips for Writing a Difficult Scene

Every writer inevitably gets to that scene that just doesn't want to work. It doesn't flow, no matter how hard you try. Well, here are some things to try to get out of that rut:

1. Change the weather

  • I know this doesn't sound like it'll make much of a difference, but trust me when I say it does.
  • Every single time I've tried this, it worked and the scene flowed magically.

2. Change the POV

  • If your book has multiple POV characters, it might be a good idea to switch the scene to another character's perspective.
  • 9/10 times, this will make the scene flow better.

3. Start the scene earlier/later

  • Oftentimes, a scene just doesn't work because you're not starting in the right place.
  • Perhaps you're starting too late and giving too little context. Perhaps some description or character introspection is needed before you dive in.
  • Alternatively, you may be taking too long to get to the actual point of the scene. Would it help to dive straight into the action without much ado?

4. Write only the dialogue

  • If your scene involves dialogue, it can help immensely to write only the spoken words the first time round.
  • It's even better if you highlight different characters' speech in different colors.
  • Then, later on, you can go back and fill in the dialogue tags, description etc.

5. Fuck it and use a placeholder

  • If nothing works, it's time to move on.
  • Rather than perpetually getting stuck on that one scene, use a placeholder. Something like: [they escape somehow] or [big emotional talk].
  • And then continue with the draft.
  • This'll help you keep momentum and, maybe, make the scene easier to write later on once you have a better grasp on the plot and characters.
  • Trust me, I do this all the time.
  • It can take some practice to get past your Type A brain screaming at you, but it's worth it.

So, those are some things to try when a scene is being difficult. I hope that these tips help :)

I've used a few of these in the past, and it worked well. So I'm passing this on...

Writing fight scenes
@bluebxlle_writer on Instagram

1. Pacing

A fight scene should be fast-paced and intense. Unless it's a final battle with numerous parties, a fight scene that's too long tends to take away suspense. To speed up your pacing, use active voice to describe movement and don't overdescribe your characters' thoughts. Excessive inner monologue will be unrealistic, as people usually have no room to think during intense combats.

2. Character mannerisms

Here's a point that people often overlook, but is actually super important. Through fight scenes, you should be able to reveal your characters' contrasting mannerisms and personality. A cunning character would play dirty - fighting less and making use of their opponent's weakness more. A violent character would aim to kill. A softer one would only target to disarm their enemies, using weakened attacks. A short-minded character would only rely on force and attack without thinking. This will help readers understand your characters more and decide who to root for.

3. Making use of surroundings

Not only the characters, you also need to consider the setting of your fight scene and use it to your advantage. Is it suitable for fighting, or are there dangerous slopes that make it risky? Are there scattered items that can help your characters fight (e.g. nails, shards of glass, ropes, wooden boards, or cutlery)? Is it a public place where people can easily spot the fight and call the authorities, or is it a private spot where they can fight to the death?

4. Description

The main things that you need to describe in a fight scene are :

• Characters involved in the fight
• How they initiate and dodge attacks
• Fighting styles and any weapons used
• The injuries caused

Be careful to not drag out the description for too long, because it slows down the pace.

5. Raise the stakes

By raising the stakes of the fight, your readers will be more invested in it. Just when they think it's over, introduce another worse conflict that will keep the scene going. Think of your characters' goals and motivations as well. Maybe if the MC didn't win, the world would end! Or maybe, one person in the fight is going all-out, while the other is going easy because they used to be close :"D

6. Injuries

Fights are bound to be dirty and resulting in injuries, so don't let your character walk away unscathed - show the effect of their injuries. For example, someone who had been punched in the jaw has a good chance of passing out, and someone who had been stabbed won't just remove the knife and walk away without any problem. To portray realistic injuries, research well. I have two posts about writing realistic pain and injuries back in my pink theme, check them out if you need any reference!

7. Drive the plot forward

You don't write fight scenes only to make your characters look cool - every fight needs to have a purpose and drive the plot forward. Maybe they have to fight to improve their fighting skills or escape from somewhere alive. Maybe they need to defeat the enemy in order to obtain an object or retrieve someone who had been kidnapped. The point is, every single fight scene should bring the characters one step closer (or further :D) to the climax.

8. Words to use

• Hand to hand combat :

Crush, smash, lunge, beat, punch, leap, slap, scratch, batter, pummel, whack, slam, dodge, clobber, box, shove, bruise, knock, flick, push, choke, charge, impact

• With weapon :

Swing, slice, brandish, stab, shoot, whip, parry, cut, bump, poke, drive, shock, strap, pelt, plunge, impale, lash, bleed, sting, penetrate

Can confirm, all of these will save your life writing fights.
