Sir Terry Pratchett: on writing Good Omens with Neil Gaiman

I love the whole interview but this little snippet most of all:

Terry: “You can usually bet, and I’m sure Neil Gaiman would say the same thing, that, uh, if I go into a bookstore to do a signing and someone presents me with three books, the chances are that one of them is going to be a very battered copy of Good Omens; and it will smell as if it’s been dropped in parsnip soup or something in and it’s gone fluffy and crinkly around the edges and they’ll admit that it’s the fourth copy they’ve bought”.

You can never own enough Good Omens copies.

This just made me teary. This is my (old, battered) copy of Good Omens.

Oh my! 🥹 you have a parsnip soup inscription! This is beautiful.

Glorious! ❤

There's nothing I can add to this...

...Except the four recipes for Parsnip Soup (gingered, two versions of curried, and roasted with Parmesan) under the cut.

Decided to do something different because I met a friend at the bookstore recently, remembering one of my recent posts:

person A spots person B browsing in a bookstore. They sneak up to the adjacent aisle and whisper through the gap, "Guess who?" person B's surprised laughter meets their playful greeting.

───────⊱◈◈◈⊰───────

"*(whispering)* Guess who?"

"*(laughing)* Oh my god, you scared me! How did you know I'd be here?"

"I know you too well. What are you hiding over there? Any good finds?"

"Just looking at some cookbooks. Thinking of trying some new recipes. How about you? What brings you here?"

"I was actually on my way to meet you. Thought I'd catch you at the café, but this is an even better surprise."

  • Puss In Boots is a digital painting

I’m loving the more artistic approach to 3D animation, and how each movie that utilizes the method does so in a different way with different inspirations behind it. Keep it up!

The thing that makes Death a GREAT villain/antagonist is that he’s a force of nature that got upset and started behaving incorrectly.

His motivation is to kill Puss for being a cocky shit. Someone having 9 lives is ridiculous on its own but to have someone waste them like Puss does is just offensive, so Death stepped in to take his last life early for funsies. That’s how pissed off Death was, and he explains it very clearly in the crystal caverns scene.

Death is a foil to Puss. Yeah, he’s only there to kill Puss. That’s the point. He’s not a person, he’s literally Death. He’s the light at the end of the tunnel for Puss, but he’s running at him. He’s the one that forces Puss to change. He’s the one that makes his journey harder. The single only reason why getting that wish even matters is because Death forced it to matter.

He’s vindictive, cruel, and spiteful. That’s different from just being plain evil.   Him having rules he begrudgingly follows makes his “defeat” interesting. He can kill Puss at any time. Heck, he could slaughter everyone at the end. But he doesn’t. He’s unpredictable.

Also, the main job of an antagonist is to show the protagonist’s development. That’s why it’s called “antagonist” - they antagonize. Every one of Puss’ encounters with Death are direct catalysts to his character growth. This movie doesn’t work without him.

He’s a fantastic antagonist straight from a classic storybook.
