Prologue: Please Stay

Pairing: Billy Hargrove x Steve Harrington

Summary: Billy dies after the battle of Starcourt Mall and Steve refuses to leave him alone. While he’s helping prepare Billy for his final resting place, he reminisces and mourns what could never be. 

Warnings: Major Character Death (canon), blood and injuries, brief suicidal thoughts (later parts), mourning/grief/panic attack, morgues (later parts), angst without a happy ending

Word Count: 1108

A/N: For my C2 square “Hugs” square in @billyhargrovebingo See the moodboard I made for this fic and for my free space on the bingo! Also, while I was working on it, I discovered this fanart by ichigata. And as always, thank you to @writer-in-theory and @lcvingprentjss for being the best beta readers and hype team.

If anyone had asked Steve what the worst day of his life was, he would have said Saturday, November 12, 1983, the day he went to Jonathan Byers’ house to apologize and was subsequently sucked into the mess of everything involved with the Upside Down. If someone were to ask him now, it would, without a shadow of a doubt, be Thursday, July 4, 1985. Ten minutes ago it would have been because of being held by the Russians, interrogated, and tortured. Now? He is confident that when he walks out of this mall, half of him will be missing.
