Lokiverse Extras UPDATED

Lokiverse (Mixology:) A story-driven years-long  series project of Loki-focused stories, centered on telling the stories of specific, banded together sections of the multiverse; where Loki and his differing relationships throughout their varied (but often somewhat similar) timelines. Each Universe and or Door has it’s own differing turn of events, with one thing in common: something that allows their Universes to interact, and; at times, when needed: support each other.

“ There are times when the faces beyond that  particular  threshold are all we have, and all we  can  have.  For  some  of me, I am better family to myself than  any other  in our own worlds. “

- Loke (Loki) - Universe/Door 8 - GROUNDED : Chapter 11

Let me know if you want to be tagged or removed from tags in asks!

Bolded Titles are the links to the fics on AO3.

Condensing the original down because it was getting crazy-long and Extras will be going for a long time to come. Which means if I don’t? It’s only gonna get bigger and crazier. That said I am also doing like I did with the platovember master list/update post and adding Universe/Door numbers and parts where it applies: and a read more cut to this main post specifically so it doesn’t get too stupid long with the updates in the future.

1. Dappled [Vestibule 1: Door/Universe 6] (pt 2 from platovember) - Confused after Hydra’s exposure and surviving the helicarrier crash, Bucky Barnes finds himself company familiar enough to both sides of his mind to keep him wary of his new ‘friend’. Having been the resulting price of failure where Hydra is concerned; his options boil down to staying with Loki: or going it on his own…

2. Just One More - GROUNDED OT [Vestibule 1 Universe/Door 8] - Teasing turns to something else when Tony doesn’t get his way. Loki (Loke) and Tony (Charmer) spending time in Asgard during his recovery after the dock scene in GROUNDED.

3. Kindred [Vestibule 1 Door/Universe 3]  (pt 1)- Bruce is among those ‘visiting’ Loki after the Bifrost is repaired, after giving Tony’s paranoia a little nudge to find a way to get a hold of Thor to do so. The conversations are fairly 'normal’ when more than one of the others are present. Bruce is starting to lose his patience with the lot he brought with him though. Not that he was given much of a choice.

Meanwhile, his personal interactions with the Trickster? Are… almost unsettling in how calming and unfettered they are by comparison to his interactions with others since his accident, questions aside. To the point that, Banner wants getting his answers underway; but isn’t willing to push -too- much rush to them once that’s accomplished…

4. Mixed Signals [Vestibule 1 Universe/Door 1] (pt 2 from platovember) - When stubborn and distrustful, meets stubborn and distrustful? It makes filling in the gaps a difficult thing. Nearly a week after leaving his throne behind to step between Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes: if Loki is actually going to keep good on another of his ass-backwards bets? Tony wants to make good use of it.

Image

[Vestibule 2 : Universe/Door 9]

In another Universe where Natasha switched places with Clint in twenty ten/eleven; the change in roster, also changes some of the outcomes. Going head to head with Thor in his weakened but deranged state didn’t end without it’s bruises: but it did end with more than a few extra questions, after her –and their– fight with the big blond intruder was cut just short of may be Nat needing a gurney and maybe a trip to the hospital rather than just a little disinfectant and some salve. Which, would be fine mostly; if anybody but Masters remembered the agent who stepped in out of nowhere to manage putting the big guy face down in the mud…

Other dimensional beings are undoubtedly amazed at what human beings will accept as human beings too. “But it’s just a stick with a person on it.”

NEIL WHY. WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT.

This turns up on my dashboard. And I read it and am impressed that someone writes exactly the post that I’d write, without actually reading the name of the person who posted it.

And then I’m puzzled at all the Neil Why’s, and realise that this was me in the Wayback Long-ago.

At least I’m consistent.

And, I should point out, we are no closer to being able to spot the extra-dimensional stick “people” who move unobserved among us.

"A cishet person must have made this, no queer person would ever portray queerness in this way."

"This artist must be white."

"No SA victim would ever handle the subject in this way."

"No woman would ever write women like this."

"This creator is obviously neurotypical. Everyone with autism/ADHD/depression understands-"

Nope.

People who make these blanket statements are very frequently proven wrong when the creator comes out as a member of that group. And even when they aren't proven wrong, even in cases where the creator isn't from the group in question, actual members of the group who don't fit whatever arbitrary criteria are being expressed will see these statements and feel excluded and erased.

Not everyone in your group is going to share your experiences. No single individual gets to personally decide what does or doesn't count as a "valid" expression of trauma or being part of a particular group, and creators are also not obligated to out themselves in order to "prove" their validity.

If something doesn't resonate with you, all that means is that it doesn't resonate with you. You don't have to like it. But you don't get to decide what it means to someone else.

It IS true that being on here gives you a tumblr accent. This morning my mother asked me something and i replied "i don't know i've never heard these words in that order" and she nearly choked laughing. It wasn't even that funny

at my old job i had a coworker who was tired and made a coffee with like 6 or 8 shots of espresso and i just casually went up to them like “are you trying to meet god?” and not only was this absolutely hilarious to them but they brought it up in future conversations they thought it was so funny but to me this was just as casual as saying “woah that’s a lot of coffee”

Being funny on Tumblr and then going to be funny in real life is like traveling to a foreign country and baby the currency exchange rate is biased in your favor

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Might I add:

The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed

The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child

The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship

The adventures of a space roomba

Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)

I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head

I am in love with you /p

What about the one with the princess locked in a tower learning to become a wizard? That’s lived in my mind for years and I haven’t seen it in a long time

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

  • summary: Bruce
  • summary: "Bruce Banner"
  • summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

People often say to me: “You draw like some kind of inhuman machine.  If I eat your brain, will I gain your power?”  The answer is yes, but there is another way. The key to precise drawing is building up muscle memory so that your arm/hand/fingers do the things you want them to do when you want them to do them.  Teaching yourself to draw a straight line or to make sweet curves is just a matter of practice and there are some exercises you can do to help improve. If you’re going to be doodling in class or during meetings anyway, why not put that time to good use?

This is so important to mention to all artists. The reason PRACTISE improves drawing ability over time is it increases the literal, technical movement in your hands and arms through /muscle memory/.

There was also this gem:

Waititi obvioualy didnt have a problem stomping all over and setting fire to all of the plot and characterization from the first two Thor movies, but that’s none of my business..

Well he isn’t pals with Pratt, so he has noone to destroy the franchise with.

Damn, the hypocrisy of this guy is so blatant that is almost funny, if he hadn’t already completely destroyed a movies’ trilogy, a franchise, a fandom and a character…

Even seeing his name makes me cringe…

Even seeing his name makes me want to light something (or someone) on fire.

There was no problem in inheriting someone else’s characters and “messing them up as much as possible” before. Why is it now suddenly a problem?

Wow. That’s … pretty rich coming from him. I don’t know what else there is to say. Going back to ignoring this person now.

I’m pretty sure the reason for him not wanting to take GotG over from James Gunn is the fact that the fanboys would actually be butthurt if he did with it what he did with the Thor franchise. While the latter was always unjustly considered as one of the weaker ones in the MCU and Marvel practically gave him permission to destroy everything that came before, Guardians as one of the most beloved franchises would be another matter altogether. Plus he’d have to stand comparison to Gunn who practically invented the current portrayal of the Guardians.

So … my guess is he’ll do something like Squirrel Girl or another thing that would fit his ironic impro meta shtick.

If they really give him Thor 4 after he repeatedly voiced his general contempt with that world, I’ll just forget that Marvel exists and plunge myself completely into my newfound love for the goodness that is Aquaman. It’s a lot like Thor pre 2017, with a director, screenwriters and leading actor who actually give a fuck.

@schlotzshewrote I think you hit the nail on the head with that last comment. I’ve often wondered how the fanboys would have reacted if TW had “respectfully disrespected” say, Cap or Iron Man the way that he did with Thor. (I’m guessing not kindly). I suspect he got away with it because the Thor films weren’t as popular among the 18-49 year old white cishet male demographic that Marvel have decided is their “core” audience.

But I am relieved for two reasons:

1. The biggest difference between James Gunn and TW is that you can tell Gunn truly loved all those characters and that world. He had empathy for all their struggles and I think if he had been given a chance to handle Loki, we would have gotten an appropriate resolution to his storyline. Whereas TW just can’t stop making “jokes” about his contempt for the previous Thor films. GOTG is my favorite MCU franchise after Thor. It would break my heart to see it undergo the same treatment.

2. IF Thor 4 does happen, hopefully Loki and TH won’t be involved (since they’ll be in the series) so not only will CH and TW not be able to wreck them anymore but I will be free to completely ignore that film. :) And truthfully I don’t see TW wanting to use Loki again, and I don’t see TH wanting to reprise the role after TR.

OMG all of this really pisses me off, Taika. Somehow I either missed or blocked out some of these quotes. There’s so much packed into even just this one:

“Not to really wanna humiliate Loki all the way through the film, but because he was most definitely over-powered for a lot in the other films, in terms of presence and his story, and kind of overshadowed (…) a little bit…”

Effing really? So, it was a conscious decision to take Loki down in order to make Thor look better. Taika’s literally saying there was a purpose to it, acknowledging that they know people care more about Loki than Thor. They took Loki down a few pegs because, apparently, they couldn’t figure out how to raise Thor up any other way.

And they had to humiliate Loki, rather than just reducing the size of his role because—why, exactly? Well, I guess there’s no better way to get rid of a rival than character assassination. If they’d just reduced the size of Loki’s role, it would have been a case of critics and fans complaining about “not enough Loki” again—so Thor is still overshadowed. No, you have to take away that rival’s dignity and autonomy, disempower him, make him an object of derision if you want to rid yourself of the problem.

Loki was “over-powered” in the other films? Let’s just unpack that statement, shall we?

  • In the first Thor, Loki had to be as powerful as Thor (in his own way) in order to make the hero’s journey worthwhile. He was the antagonist, for God’s sake. A hero is only as good as the villain.
  • And exactly how was the supervillain in The Avengers, at the time the most ambitious superhero movie ever made, supposed to stand up against 6 superheroes without posing a significant threat? They were lucky Tom managed to pull off that role as believably as he did—without a strong antagonist that movie would have tanked, and so goes the whole MCU.
  • Loki was as powerful in the previous films as the previous filmmakers needed him to be. By the time Dark World rolled around, Loki was established as a powerful character, so Alan Taylor did the right thing to maintain that consistent characterization. There’s something to be said for respecting what has come before, Taika. It’s called having things make sense. Also, it clearly didn’t hurt the film that Loki was still strong, because Loki is about the only thing in Dark World all the critics liked.
  • Loki from the comics, it goes almost without saying, is far more powerful than they’ve allowed him to be in the MCU.
  • Thor and Loki are brothers. They have to be on somewhat the same power level. Of course I know Loki’s really Jotun, but if he was significantly less powerful than Thor someone would have suspected a lot sooner that they were not really blood-related.

So, Loki was in no way “over-powered,” in the previous films, within a superpowers/abilities context. And, I mean, I know Taika had nothing to do with this, but then the Russo’s had Thor breathing in space and withstanding the power of a sun in Infinity War? THAT is what it looks like when you jarringly over-power a character, pal.

But beyond the utility of Loki’s superpowers to the previous films:

Loki’s “presence and his story” overpowered Thor’s because he’s simply more interesting. Partly because Tom acted circles around Chris. No offense to Chris; Tom is just that good. But also because the villain can and sometimes should be as interesting as the hero (e.g. Heath Ledger’s Joker). Sometimes, it’s the villain who makes the film. What exactly is wrong with that?

Loki was simply always the juicier role. Branagh told Tom that from the beginning (in different words). It’s not Tom or Loki’s fault that Thor can’t compare.

Over the hundreds of years of the development of Norse mythology, Loki just became the most interesting character. He prompts the action in many legends. Thor is a relatively minor character in comparison. He’s a great warrior (yawn). Loki had the pathos, the intelligence, and the wit that made the legends centering on him strong enough to endure the centuries.

There’s a deep psychological and sociocultural interest in the Trickster character, and it’s reflected in many other myths and ledgends around the world, such as the Coyote of many Native American cultures and Odysseus himself in the Odyssey. Aladdin. Sundiata. Krishna. What Marvel (and Tom) managed to do with these movies was tap into that ancient archetype. And then they let Taika, Chris, and the Russo’s completely shit all over it.

Marvel still has no idea what they had with Loki or how they wasted him. And Tom. And as long as people like Taika and the Russo’s keep making them big money, the don’t care. Too bad they’ll never realize how much more they could have made by keeping Loki. But I guess that’s what the TV series is going to be about—a way to exploit Loki’s appeal without giving him his proper due.

But what really perplexed me about Taika saying this is that I don’t understand his motivation to do this to Loki. I know there was motivation from someone (and I’m becoming less inclined to protect that person than I was earlier this week), but why should Taika resent Loki enough to willfully humiliate him? Of all the characters, Taika should have identified most with Loki! A maverick, a smartass, and an irreverent genius? I can only speculate that Taika was heavily influenced by the powers that granted him the opportunity to helm a massive blockbuster and worldwide audience.

“After all the shitty things that Loki’s done in the last few films.” Sure, Taika. Go with that.

“why should Taika resent Loki enough to willfully humiliate him? Of all the characters, Taika should have identified most with Loki! A maverick, a smartass, and an irreverent genius?”

You know, I’ve wondered this too. I’m loathe to go to personal on this, I don’t know these people. My understanding based on interviews is mostly that CH was upset about not being able to compete with TH, and brought in TW to “fix his problem” for him. But I’ve read a thing or two that has made me wonder, so here I come with more screenshots and another essay…

~

~

~

~

His comment on how “he doesn’t have to be a tortured artist to be interesting, he can just be a weird new Zealander” is so odd to me and always has been. Why does it end up in such a personal dig at TH and Loki? Is he sort of projecting onto Loki or something??

Why is he personally competing with a fictional character in that statement??

~

~

People often ask me, ‘Why did you become a filmmaker?’ Well, the main reason, just wanted to impress my mum and dad, and to show them ‘I’m not a loser, I don’t care what you say, I can achieve some dreams, not my own dreams but other people’s dreams! I can get close to being J.J. Abrams. I know you wanted him as a son, well you got me, I’m sorry I’m not J.J. Abrams,’ they say ‘Ah tiger we wished we’d called you J.J. Abrams, would have been so much cooler, you’d have done Star Wars!Well I didn’t, mum and dad I didn’t, you’re stuck with me.

~

~

In his own way, maybe he is identifying with Loki

But it’s punishing, and disregarding. In Thor 2011 Loki failed to impress his father.

~

TW brought him back under Odin’s subjugation in Ragnarok.

I guess his failure was “fixed” by allowing him to crawl back and try again? Oh how loving of you, Odin, for saying “sons” instead of son. Let me not start on that again.

A lot of people saw this as beautiful, but we hated this. Why??

Because Loki already moved past the point where he wanted to “impress his dad” and lot of us loved that progress.

It shows a transfer from a fawn trauma response in an abusive relationship, to a fight response. While both trauma responses are valid, fighting makes you feel more in control, and is sometimes better for your mental health. This is more satisfying for us to watch, because very often the only thing that gets you out of a dead-end abusive connection with someone is to get angry and fight for yourself till you can leave. In this context, it shows progress.

It’s no surprise I feel that the family dysfunction was reestablished. The narrative of the movie purposefully reestablished it and tried to call it a happy conclusion, which I revolted against, because I identify with the character in a very different way. I loved Loki’s anger because I know it is one of the major steps he needs to take in order to take back his power, achieve healing and be able to move on. “Trust my rage.” I seethed alongside him. It was so validating. Loki was progressing, he was learning, he was fighting. He was supposed reclaim his identity from his fathers lies, own himself, take responsibility for himself. It was his new start, his chance, his power. He was supposed to heal, reach his happiness on his own terms and his own strength.

This was all brought crashing down when he was retconned to be limp-wristed and stupid. When he was “calmed” by Odin’s worthless acknowledgement. When he had to be beat into submission by Thor. When Thor symbolically took Odin’s place. TW reinstated Loki’s dependency on his dad’s approval from the first movie - he probably understands it better.

This all makes it seem like the messed up conclusion was unconscious to some extent. While the goal definitely was to humiliate Loki to help CH get somewhere, putting Loki back under the thumb of the people who drove him to madness in the first movie was probably not intentionally designed. It happened by accident, because the truth of the dynamic was not acknowledged or understood. The character was retconned and his background removed, so it wouldn’t matter anyway.

~

Perhaps the director identified more strongly with a desire to please your parents, regardless of how they treat you, than with a desire to tell them to treat you right or fuck off. Thor’s unending loyalty to his asshole parent probably made more sense. Loki needed to be brought “back in line” for his character arc to complete, as if being angry at an abusive parent is a “facade” because you actually love them.

I say, so what if you do still love them? That doesn’t excuse their abuse, nor mean you should subject yourself to it for the sake of forgiveness. Where is the progress in that? A home is still a home, regardless of how you feel about it’s inhabitants… Good grief. That is NOT TRUE.

And that is why I fundamentally just disagree with the message of this movie.

~

I just want to point out that we will never really know. These people are all strangers and trying to come to conclusions on how their brains work based on a few interviews is really reaching. At the same time, we’re trying to understand what the hell happened to our story, so we are going to wonder these things. Just try not to make judgement too easily.

@crochetandloki remember that question you asked the other day, and  I gave you the summarized version in comments? Read all this, because this right here; is a HUGE chunk of why a lot of people despise Taika. It leaves off a couple of even more damning interviews, but the basics are there.

Personally I wish they would have dropped him from current titles a lot sooner. Gunn is at least, moderately familiar with how the characters TW admittedly ruined were prior; and where they were going, so he has a CHANCE at fixing the mess Taika and others have made. Or at least starting it back in that direction.

Dunno that I’ll watch the movie or next season of the Bob: the Accountant series (heavily leaning no, though and at current) but yeah and this is also a large chunk of why I won’t: and, snowballing from his mentality also why the first season was such a sloppy dumpster fire within the first twenty minutes.
