If you're still on Twitter, it's crucial you no longer respond in any way to anything a blue check says. If it's the most idiotic and vile nonsense, no matter how badly you want to dunk on them: don't! Block, mute, ignore and do not click. They now have financial motive to post the worst rage bait possible.

A note to all creatives:

Right now, you have to be a team player. You cannot complain about AI being used to fuck over your industry and then turn around and use it on somebody else’s industry.

No AI book covers. No making funny little videos using deepfakes to make an actor say stuff they never did. No AI translation of your book. No AI audiobooks. No AI generated moodboards or fancasts or any of that shit. No feeding someone else’s unfinished work into Chat GPT “because you just want to know how it ends*” (what the fuck is wrong with you?). No playing around with AI generated 3D assets you can’t ascertain the origin of. None of it. And stop using AI filters on your selfies or ESPECIALLY using AI on somebody else’s photo or artwork.

We are at a crossroad and at a time of historically shitty conditions for working artists across ALL creative fields, and we gotta stick together. And you know what? Not only is standing up for other artists against exploitation and theft the morally correct thing to do, it’s also the professionally smartest thing to do, too. Because the corporations will fuck you over too, and then they do it’s your peers that will hold you up. And we have a long memory.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking “your peers” are only the people in your own industry. Writers can’t succeed without artists, editors, translators, etc making their books a reality. Illustrators depend on writers and editors for work. Video creators co-exist with voice actors and animators and people who do 3D rendering etc. If you piss off everyone else but the ones who do the exact same job you do, congratulations! You’ve just sunk your career.

Always remember: the artists who succeed in this career path, the ones who get hired or are sought after for commissions or collaboration, they aren’t the super talented “fuck you I got mine” types. They’re the one who show up to do the work and are easy to get along with.

And they especially are not scabs.

*that’s not even how it ends that’s a statistically likely and creatively boring way for it to end. Why would you even want to read that.

For those who don't know what this means (like I didn't), a church is a 501c3 organization: a tax exempt entity. In order for it to stay that way they may not get involved in legislature- including endorsing a political candidate. So if you witness someone doing this, you can report them to the IRS using form 13909. (If you're in the US)

Reblog if you’re over 20 and still read/write fan fiction.

I’m curious!

Normally, I just reblog this kind of thing with a note like, “not only do I read/write fanfic, I have an over-20 child who does the same.” But.

Who da hell do you think manages the Archive of Our Own? Who created it; who does the coding; who WENT TO CONGRESS three times to argue for our constitutionally-protected right to show Kirk boinking Spock?

Hint: it wasn’t people under 20.

Who do you think makes the content on AO3? Sure, lots of teens… but lots and lots and LOTS of not-teens. The OTW′s been around for almost 10 years - the people who put up the first content sure as hell weren’t 10 and under at the time. (Or is there the assumption that the teenagers of 10 years ago wandered away and are no longer participating in fic fandom?)

The more I think about it, the less I understand this kind of question. Do teenagers actually believe the people who manage fic archives like AO3 and fanfiction.net are not involved in fic fandom? That they do coding and deal with complaints and register the domain and all that, but don’t read any of the fic?

Twitter (2020) VS the Hays code (1930)

Maybe the Hayes code wasn’t that bad

Avatar

Imagine knowing this little about history. The Hays code we’re so apparently keen to bring back included the following:

  • “Miscegenation” (interracial relationships) were not allowed.
  • Sex hygiene and venereal diseases were not appropriate subjects.
  • Homosexuality was not to be depicted.
  • Ridicule of the clergy was not allowed.
  • Religion could never be depicted in a mocking manner.
  • Words like “God,” “Lord,” “Jesus,” “Christ,” “hell,” and “damn” could not be used unless it was in connection with religious ceremonies.

But yeah let’s fucking bring back the Hays code because sex is evil. You fucking lemmings. The point is that the Hays code was a horrible, immoral piece of bullshit that was only there to enforce white supremacy and Christianity on screen, and the reason people compare you to them is because of this absolutely brain-numbing tomfoolery.

Good lord, we’ve really reached “maybe the Hayes code was good” levels of purity culture. Yikes.

Because of the Hayes Code, women were no longer portrayed as independent beings. Instead they were reduced to mere appendages to men.

It’s driving me nuts because I can’t find the quote, but one of the rationales for the Code I read in a film history book was (paraphrased) “If it’s not fit for a child to watch, then it’s not fit for anyone.” And gosh, doesn’t THAT sound familiar…

Homosexuality actually could be depicted under the Hayes Code! By irredeemable villains!! Or people who died because of it!!!

If you’ve ever wondered why media has so much sh*tty stereotypes about homosexuality and villainy, or the bury your gays trope exists, well look no further than the Hayes Code and its wide reaching impact on generations of media makers! Our current rating system? Was actually an improvement on the Hayes Code.

Feel free to miss me with that bullsh*t, thanks.

I just can’t with the “don’t make fun of us for defending the Hays Code! How are we supposed to know what that even is?”

You. Look. It. Up. You look it up. YOU LOOK IT UP. You do what you should be doing every single time you see something you don’t understand. You fuckin look it up. You have libraries of information in your pocket. Look it up. You do not have an excuse for not opening another tab, typing in the thing, and hitting enter. Look it up.

And if you’re LGBTQIA, Bipoc, non-xtian, or a woman in the US, and you spend any time looking up your history, you will see the Hays Code. It’s not just a silly old rule that we can laugh at now. It’s the framework we’re trying to dismantle. You need to know this. You should’ve been taught by your parents and teachers, but if you weren’t, you have to pick up the slack and do the research yourself. That sucks and I’m sorry, but it’s an unavoidable part of life.

See, this is that critical thinking stuff that purity culture is so obsessed with. You cannot interpret a thing (like “sex scenes are only for horny lol” being juxtaposed with the Hays Code) if you don’t know

  • the meaning of the language (the definitions of “sex,” “story,” “passion,” etc), the topics referenced (the Hays Code, what sex scenes are),
  • the speakers (Lily Orchard is notoriously aggressive, bigoted, and authoritarian… the Hays Code was written by a priest, a trade paper editor, and some studio heads),
  • or the context (the first statement is part of a ridiculous list of “writing tips” that also includes such gems as [paraphrased] wlw only kissing at the end is abuse, high-stakes conflict is bad, and the good guy must kill the villain, and was written in 2020… while the Hays Code was written in 1930 as a way to self-censor bc they thought the govt might step in if anyone saw their media as “lowering the moral standards” of ppl with “succeptible minds,” aka women, children, the disabled, and poor ppl who needed to be spoon-fed images of the “correct standards of life”).

You really do need that info. You do. You need to go get it. Then you look at it. And you combine it with all of the other applicable info you have. (For example, if you have had sex, or consumed any media containing sex.) Then you think through the thing, while taking everything you know into account. You identify what it was supposed to mean, and decide what it means to you. Congratulations! You have done the critical thinking.

At least if you still agree that sex’s only purpose in literature is to give you a boner, and that it’s a good idea to put down sweeping policies to prevent that from happening, you’ll have some kind of thought process behind it. And you can start trying to reconcile that view with its historical and present effects on minorities and society as a whole.

And if you don’t know what those effects are, FUCKIN LOOK IT UP

GOSH, I WONDER WHY PEOPLE WANT TO BURN AND BAN BOOKS ALL OF A SUDDEN. WHAT IGNORANCE AND EVIL COULD POSSIBLY FUEL THIS ENTIRELY UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT.

One time in 1925 Buster Keaton was at Norma Talmadge & Joe Schenck’s house for a dinner party & Hays was invited. As the beautifully dressed salads made their way to the guests, the one being given to Hays fell clean in half & landed directly in his lap ruining his suit. All eyes fell on Buster Keaton, but he never owned up to it.

Hey wasn’t lilly orchard (the twitter OP) the one who beat the shit out of her little sister? 🤔 funny it’s almost like these dinguses who get all up in arms about fictional things seem to have a high rate of abusing people…

I’m sorry, she did WHAT

WAKE UP BABE EASTERN EUROPEAN CHO CHANG JUST DROPPED

@kos-chei im REELING!!!

"first white person to ever sucessfully br racist against other white people" the oppression and violence against polish and other eastern european people in england and Britian extends before and after J.K. Rowling writing this piece of shit.

Like I get the "joke" but you're ignoring the decades of shit polish people have faced in this country that she building off of. Its not 'white people on white people racism haha' its contributing to structural oppression and xenophobia thar exists here.

Avatar

^^^ please be wary of portrayal of polish people and other eastern europeans like this, it’s the same kind of xenophobia as for example portraying mexicans as stupid

there’s a lot of hatred among british people for polish people specifically because of how many polish immigrants they have and you know just how much countries love immigrants

polish people speaking extremely bad english is an old ass stereotype that’s so prevalent it’s even in a lot of medias about WWII where even though poland was on the side of the allies who generally get honorable and uplifting representations, what polish people get is stupid, poor, bad at english jokes of characters and this is. exactly that. it’s disgusting

that last name is completely made up based on a very classic polish name Lech, and im not sure how to feel about it but she has a record of naming characters of different cultures very poorly and this doesnt rub me the right way

also what the fuck are slavic eyes

So I work at a video game store in a mall and across the hall from us is this really nice suit shop. One day one of the guys came in an asked if they could use our microwave (the store they used to go to closed down) and we bargined for use of their bathroom in return since the mall bathrooms are like a 5 min trek.

So for like three months now we just have these men in really nice suits come in and talk while using our microwave and teach them about nerdy shit? Then I, the goblin king in various shitty tee shirts and paint stained pants, walk into their super expensive store and just get greeted with “Yo dude what’s good?” and talk about the pains of steaming silken dress shirts properly and it’s my favorite business interaction every day

A new jewelry store opened up right next to our store and when I used the bathroom today we were talking about it. I hate it on principle (they flooded our systems closet during building) and immediately both Suit Guys™ working went on mini rants. “Their suits are baggy as hell, I wouldn’t trust them to sell me a $9,000 ring when they can’t get a fitted jacket. They look so unprofessional, ” and “I saw one of the dude’s wearing a teal shirt. It’s fall, and you go with teal? At least get a color to match your store if you’re gonna ignore the seasons like that, Christ, but teal is awful.”

I live for this commentary fam.
