If only there were some sort of facility where teenagers could be taught new skills.

Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.

Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to teach yourself. YouTube is a valid option.

yeah okay ill reblog that :]

Well someone displeased the sky gods didn’t they

My first thought was someone pleased the sky gods, because this is a SHOW.

That’s the problem with gods; their pleasure and their wrath often look the same.

why is this fire quote from a tumblr post

Because tumblr is the real world equivalent of infinite monkeys using typewriters eventually producing Shakespeare.

"But she gave birth to you, you owe her!"

My mother wanted to be a mother. It was her dream to be a mother. She poured all her energy into being a Good Christian Mother.

She did not want me. She wanted motherhood. I was a side effect of her dream. Once I was old enough to disagree with her, she hated me. I wasn't making her look like a Good Christian Mother. I was loud, disobedient, needy... almost like a child. Not quiet and pretty and grateful for crumbs.

Yes, she birthed me. For herself and her partner. For the people who were already born. Not for me. As all mothers have for all of time. It's not the birthing that makes a mother worth honoring, it's the parenting.

also, don't mistake "put in a lot of time and energy" for "made an effort to do a good job". if you put a lot of time and energy into hurting the kid, that's not actually trying to do a good job, that's just being an asshole.

Are you trapped on tumblr right now?

Is there something you planned to do before you got trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Are you yelling at yourself to get up and do the thing, but you can’t, because you’re trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Consider this your save point.

Put tumblr down, stand up, stretch, and go do the thing you planned to do. Future you will be incredibly grateful.

Things people in the notes have been able to do thanks to this post:

  • eat breakfast
  • go to bed
  • get out of bed
  • take a shower
  • write
  • practice
  • watch Superman Returns and write a paper on it
  • retain shreds of sanity

I need y’all to know that you’re doing amazing, and I’m so glad that I was able to help you break out of a procrastination loop you did not want to be stuck in.

Helpful post I’ve added to my queue in case it helps someone else at the random point when it’s posted.

you do not need to know someones agab

you do not need to know someone’s genitalia

you do not need to know if someone is pre or post op

you do not need to treat gender and sex as opposite and irrefutable categories that determine anything about a person

you are not owed anything about a stranger’s body unless you are a doctor or in a situation where knowing what’s in someone’s pants is immediately relevant, like in a sexual context. it’s not appropriate to ask and you do. not. need. to. know.

capitalism, marginalization, and poverty will not reward even the hardest of workers. you aren't failing just because your efforts aren't working. we live in a system stacked against the common civilian.

Tumblr just put a fcuking harry potter post on my feed as a "recommendation based on your likes"

Why not recommend me smallpox next. Or arthritis maybe.

Settings -> Account Settings -> Content you see -> Filtered Post Content

Add "Rowling", "jkr", "harry potter", "snape", "remus lupin", whatever you want.

Yeah I'm not doing all that. Tumblr should just ban all things related to that franchise

you are like a mewling helpless baby you are standing in the rain and i am offering you a goddamn umbrella and you throw it on the floor and yell at god to abolish rain

"you are standing in the rain and I am offering you a goddamn umbrella and you throw it on the floor and yell at god to abolish rain" is a killer line and I wish I wrote that

Why art belongs in STEM / STEAM

Avatar
samthor

any field of art requires some form of math, geometry, chemistry, physics, technology, and/or engineering. like holy shit, Shannon, even primitive basket weaving with large blades of grass requires an understanding of certain mathematics principles.

I dated an engineer once who couldn’t problem solve his way out of a paper bag. Not because he was dumb, but because he had never been taught to think critically about anything at all in any of his STEM courses. For the sake of humanity we need to incorporate things like art, history, and humanities into STEM programming. Trust me, you want your structural engineers, your doctors, and your scientists to be able to use skills learned in these disciplines.

These motherfuckers don't even know that pretty much all origami since the 90s is designed completely through extremely complex mathematical principles. One of the most famous origami artists of all time is a literal NASA rocket scientist.

I want this in every library, everywhere. After all, some kids won’t even google this stuff because they don’t want parents/siblings checking their browser history.

This is really awesome. And if you’re not familiar with how the Dewey Decimal system works - the numbers subject-based, which means these numbers are applicable in EVERY library. So if you see something you want to research on this list - look for those same numbers in any of your local libraries.

This is wonderful.

triggers too are a bad idea to reveal because not everyone is very niceys

and some people, surprisingly enough, are not going to be good people, and they might say mean stuff to you to make you mad and sad.

Dont reveal anything that will make it easier for you to be manipulated, or things that will make you an easy target

dont say what school you go to

a lot of you need to be a lot more chill about cishet passing people and couples still being part of the queer community

its happened to a friend recently and ive seen plenty of people including streamers/youtubers etc have the same thing happen over and over again, where they put the LGBT label on their streams or a pride flag in their bio and then they get people demanding to know every detail of their identity.

if you see a guy online with his girlfriend and he has a pride flag in his bio and your first reaction is to question whether hes even allowed to put that there, log off. the guy could be bi, could be trans, could be nb, could be literally any queer identity at all and it doesnt matter. its none of your fucking business. he could also just be an ally showing support, its none. of your. business.

you are not the queer police and it is not your job to make sure everyone in the queer community has the properly documented justification for being part of it. touch grass. you need to be normal about not knowing everyones labels and identities and about people keeping those private.

cishet passing people have always existed and will always exist within the queer community, they are our family and belong with us.

Doctor red flags:

-Mentions weight loss, exercise, nutrition, mental wellness, before any physical examination/testing

-interrupts you

-tries to rush the appointment

-laughs at you

-says you're too young

-Touches you without warning or asking for consent (common with older male doctors unfortunately, but is becoming less common)

-accuses you of self dxing/mentions dr. Google

-mentions anything about powering through the pain

Do not be afraid to drop a doctor/caregiver and see a new one. Doctor shopping is a term made by ableds who believe every doctor is perfect. Your health is precious and you should only trust those you're comfortable with to take care of it. Do not feel bad about offending the doctor. They do not care. They won't harass you or question you (if they do then that's..probably illegal). I know its hard with some insurances or lesser served areas so don't feel bad if you can't, but if you have the option to do so do not be afraid.

Extra tip: Most doctors will behave themselves if you bring an advocate. Even just having a friend sit quietly will help.

A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.

this fucks me up every single time

I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.

After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.

She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.

Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.

The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.

The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.

Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.

I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.

This is so fucking important and I think it’s something I needed right now
