The rest of the crew looked just as grim. Jet stared at the ground, shaking in barely contained anger. Kobra held Jet’s arm so tightly his knuckles were white and his jaw was clenched. He looked just as pissed, but Poison recognized the shine in his eyes that said he was trying so hard not to cry.

Ghoul just looked blank. Blank and far away.

Poison repeated himself, willing himself to not look behind him where Pony kept The Girl entertained.

“How?” Kobra asked, voice wobbling dangerously. A horrible mixture of righteous fury and indescribable sadness. “We don’t have the technology. We’ll have to-”

“Burn it off.” Ghoul interrupted.

Everyone looked at him, surprised that he spoke. He still looked far away, but there was a tightness on his face and in his shoulders that let everyone know how aware and present he really was. He met everyone’s eyes and said, “We have to burn it off.”

“Out of the question.” Jet spat. “We can’t… that’s-”

“What?” Ghoul lifted his chin. “What else can we do? Leave it on her? Let her be branded forever?”

“She’s just a kid!” Jet yelled, voice cracking. He took a deep, shuddering breath and turned his head, attempting to hide the tears his voice betrayed. “She’s just a fucking kid.”

Ghoul nodded and let the cold, detached blankness fall away. Just for a second. “I know.” He said, with so much feeling that Poison was almost knocked over. Then, the blankness was back. “I’ll do it. The rest of you will bitch out the second she starts crying.”

Poison felt like he was going to throw up, but he nodded. slowly, painfully. He squeezed his eyes closed tight and breathed in deeply. When he opened them again, Ghoul was looking at him.

“It probably wouldn’t be the worst thing she’s gone through.” He murmured, so soft and so sad that they all almost didn’t hear it.

But they did. And they understood. And they hated, so deeply hated, the world that they all lived in.
