What the devil is Olafur Arnalds going to name his main song for Broadchruch in S3?
‘So Close’ ‘So Far’ 'So … so…’ So? Erm, we’ve got a problem here Chibbers. Ran out of dem contradicting words.
What about if it was 'So Hardy finally got there.’ And what if 'there’ is in that right place that god put him in. That place he just didn’t know healed him at the time (S1). And Hardy realises that Broadchurch is the place for him, and he realises that he was a knob for leaving. And he realises that Ellie is what he was so close, yet so far from all along?
I’ve thought about this too. So Close and So Far are both from Hardy’s POV but they’re slightly different in theme. So Close was very businesslike - I’m so close to finding the killer, I’m so close to finishing this, but shadows and lies keep snatching the solution away at the last second. There was a bit of introspection in there - “I wish my life had never come here”, but generally it’s all centred on Danny and the killer.
So Far is definitely a more personal song. He’s talking about himself - I am so far from who I was, and from those I love. It’s about his struggle to stay alive, really. He’s dying in the first half of S2, and So Far touches on his emotional and psychological state and how the past is smothering him and he believes he “just can’t touch” the future.
…until some unnamed “you” comes along and quite literally gives him hope and a reason to live. “And if you’ll take my hand/Please pull me from the dark/And show me hope again/We’ll run side by side/No secrets left to hide/Sheltered from the pain.”
It’s pretty damn obvious he’s talking about Miller. She saves him, in every way. She’s his friend. She solves Sandbrook. She gives him hope for the future and shelter from the pain of his past. Helping and protecting her gives him a purpose. In a world of shadows and lies she is his touchstone, so honest and so bright, with nothing to hide from him.
Both theme songs, then, are tied to Hardy’s central struggle for the season. S1 - find Danny’s killer. S2 - find the strength to keep living. S3 - well, we know that having a family is his deepest desire, so I imagine his central struggle will be to rebuild his life and his family.
Daisy will be a big part of this, and also Miller (either as a friend or a lover). Joe is going to be the antagonist in this respect. They’re pretty much established as rivals for Ellie, but there are plenty of other people Hardy must face down in order to build a happy life and a family for himself - Tess for one, probably Karen White, Ricky, Claire and Lee in their trials, the Latimers, and of course himself. His own feelings of failure and inadequacy. His own doubt over whether he deserves to live or deserves a family.
The song will be tailored to express this conflict. Perhaps So Long? Plenty of room for angst in that one. I’ve been alone for so long, the road is so long, we still have such a long way to go… and also so long in the sense of goodbye.
But I’ve got my money on So Clear. With the thematic importance of shadows and lies and uncertainty, So Clear would be about Hardy finally seeing things clearly, stepping into the light, recognising how much Ellie means to him and how much he wants to be with her, falling in love with Broadchurch, seeing the future laid out before him and acknowledging he’s not the guilty one and he DOES deserve to live. It would be about Hardy reaching a point of understanding or revelation (which is critically important for any character’s journey) and saying 'yes. It’s finally clear now. I thought I wanted my old life with Tess in Sandbrook, but what I actually need is this new life with Ellie in Broadchurch.’ Whether the outcome is happy is another matter, but certainly this is what Hardy will be grappling with. Also, So Clear has the advantage of invoking the sea and sky scenery of Broadchurch.
Of course, since it’s from Hardy’s POV we might end up getting something like So Bright which is just about how fuckin eye-burningly bright Miller’s jacket is, or So Dumb which is about how stupid everyone is except Ellie, So Cold, which is him complaining about how bloody cold it is, So Blue which is a fuck you to the shitty ocean and the stupid neverending sky, or So Done, which is just an expression of his attitude in general.
