Hi Allie saw this on twitter and you might have seen the “dragged him down” “fucked him up” “report” lyrics being shown during back to you, and I was wondering if you have any thoughts to this because I think I’m leaning towards the interpretation that it’s describing his own relationship with the music industry rather than a romantic one? I feel like the lyrics “I love it I hate it” “all the bullshit that you put me through” etc all work for that?

Mhmmm, this is interesting because I never took the lyrics of Back To You too seriously since Louis himself said on multiple occasions it wasn't about his relationship. But I like your interpretation a lot, I do think it has similar vibes as Face The Music, so it makes perfect sense to me if it is about his relationship with the industry and being a public person that went through a lot over the years, just dressed up as a love/breakup song. I see a lot of parallels about being stuck in something you both love and hate, and you want to be in it but you don't want to face certain consequences. And I also think the moment in his career that this was written is very significant, he still wasn't quite sure what he was doing with his solo career, he knew he wanted to keep going but there were so extremely fucked up moments happening with stunts and certain obligations, and a lot of drama in general. But his love and dedication to the fans and for performing and writing always dragged him back to it. Face The Music is her older sister, almost.

I don't think the lyrics on the big screen are too revealing, it gives a little of Just Like You, but we know that when he wants to be more specific and obvious about something, he is. So I don't fully connect the dots about what the message this should come across as, they're only changing the subject of the song. And "report", which I have no clue of what it's supposed to mean. But I'm watching, it's interesting.... And I love the interpretation, anon, thank you for sharing it with me.

I think everyone is confused because when the first guy appeared and was screaming at himself in a mirror it definitely looked like it was gonna be a story of some sorts.. but then it wasn’t? And people feel like they missed something

i think perhaps there is a story of some sort. but i don't think that story's about louis. i think it's about british working class culture and what british youth, specifically, are struggling with about living in the uk right now. there are shots in the video where people seem to be grappling with something, feeling alone, feeling frustrated, feeling like they don't belong - screaming into the mirror, standing at the window. people judging other people; those shots of the boys looking straight into the camera. people meet up on the street because there's nowhere else to go. you can go to the pub - there will always be the pub. there'll always be football, drinking. and there will always be your friends; people to put you back together when everything else seems to be falling apart.
