The monster was aproaching and it would soon notice their presence, Mao Mao could feel it. He was looking around, desperately to find a way our or something to defend himself….but so far it was pointless. He was suddently surprised by the fairy suddently pressing herself against him.
image
“H-HEY!! What are you doing!?”
Feli’s request was strange, he didn’t know what he was trying to do, but once he noticed the light surrounding them, and the monster’s shadow looming over them, he understood completely.
He wrapped his around the fairy, making sure to hold her as tightly as he could and started running towards the cave entrance. He closed his eyes as he jumped forward, directly into the dead trees.
Thanks to Feli’s magic, they were both able to pass through the trees and get inside the cave, much like how she passed through the sheriff’s hands earlier.
After it was all done, Mao Mao was lying on his back with Feli resting on top of him. Their eyes were still closed, and they were both holding each other as tightly as before they entered. They found themselves surrounded by darkness, but were still glowing.

It was like taking a jump into a cool lake, Feli breathed heavily as they passed through the trees and scrambled into the cave. The monster outside roared and stomped, blocking away their entrance with boulders and dead trees. It wasn’t long before they were left in complete darkness, her ears picking up the plip-plops of cave water falling from the ceiling into the cave ground.

Feli had dared to close her eyes during the impact. She moved her hands, looking to know what she laid upon. The fae breathed in relief as she could still feel Mao Mao’s fur underneath her fingers. Feli blinked quickly, for such a rough trouser it was incredibly soft.

Still pressed against his chest, Feli could feel the beat on his chest. Even in such a daring and swift moment, the fairy still found comfort on it. She counted it mentally, moving her wings slowly at its natural beat. “Are you… Are you dead?” Once her little moment of calmness was over, she slowly rose up. Her glow becoming a lantern among the shadows.

“We merely escaped…” She looked back, patting Mao’s tuff of chest fur. “Thank you for listening to me…” The fairy allowed a smile to appear, trying to flutter up. It was still too dark for them to see.

“Can you lift me up a little? We just have to keep going for a while longer.” A stomp was heard over their heads, small cracks forming. “And we better do it quickly if we don’t want our new friend to get us.” She squinted her eyes, not making anything out of the other end. “I guess I’m our only source of light, don’t separate much. If we’re lucky then we’re alone on this cave.”

Image

“Ugh...what? Yeah, sure...”

Slowly and with some difficulty, Mao Mao stood up. It was his first time magically phasing through a solid object, and it felt as strange as he thought it would. He didn’t even bother to respond to Feli’s thank you (as a totally selfless hero would, obviously) but still kind of appreciated it.

Agreeing to her idea, the cat lifted the fairy on his hand and began walking across the cave. They were surrounded by such darkness, Mao Mao was worried the other side of the cave would also be blocked and he’d be forced to do it again.

Image

“So.....what exactly are you?”

Image

“I MEAN, I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone do this type of magic before...or anything like you for that matter.”

Mao Mao ignored the fairy’s attempts to start conversation, only focusing on the path ahead and being on the lookout for said “purple blooms”. Like everything with everything that had come out of her mouth so far, the sheriff was suspicious of it being a lie, but it was clear she needed him to stay alive in such a dangerous forest.
image
“Stay close now, will you? These parts of the world aren’t meant to be traversed without a flying vehicle, and I don’t want you to get eaten by some giant bullfrog.”
They were lucky to not encounter any hungry beasts as their journey continued, but said purple flowers were nowhere to be seen, much to Feli’s dismay.
When the talkative fairy eventually encountered the lillies Mao Mao let out a sigh of relief.
image
“If your little tale is right then we’re already in the right path, aren’t we? Let’s just keep going.”
Mao Mao took a step, but inmediately stopped right in his tracks. Without hesitation he snatched Feli from the air and pulled her close to his face, covering her mouth with his thumb to keep her from making any more noises.
image
“(There are monsters ahead, we need to find another path and not make noise!)”
He let the fairy go and looked around, there was no other direction they could take, except from a nearby cave, but it’s entrance was blocked by two large dead trees. If only Geraldine was in one piece he could slice his way inside…what could they do?

“I’m sure that I can reason with a couple of frogs, I mean, they only think of grass and flies, but sometimes they’ll thi-” As her reasoning was cut short, the fairy started to struggle in Mao Mao’s hand, who was he to grab her in such manner! Why she would turn him into a pile of ashes or maybe a rotten wood trunk to make up this offense; but she would apologize later for it… Later.

Feli would fall through his gloves again, shaking a little with anger as she drew in the air with a gasp to shout at the black cat, but was quickly shushed by a leather smelling thumb. Her wings deflated a little. “Monsters? That’s the last of our… Worries…” The fairy wondered how many more times would she be left speechless.

It was bright blue with spikes prodding its body, a horrid odor that almost her faint in the spot. Feli gulped softly, sometimes even she forgot how small could she be. She looked at her current options which at this point were quite slim.

Her kind was secretive, sometimes relying on glamour spells to hide into the form of flowers or even their animal friends. But that would leave Mao Mao unprotected as well. She glanced at the blocked passage to the cave in the corner of her eye, beginning to settle a plan. “Hold me…” She whispered, scrambling to press herself against Mao’s furry chest.

She took a deep breath, her antennae starting to shake a little. Surprisingly being by the cat was comfort. A dim luminosity started to cover them both. “I want you to run to the trees… NOW!!” Feli shouted, holding on tightly to Mao’s fur. “Don’t question it, do it!” The beast that had been lingering turned his head towards the duo.

The monster was aproaching and it would soon notice their presence, Mao Mao could feel it. He was looking around, desperately to find a way our or something to defend himself....but so far it was pointless. He was suddently surprised by the fairy suddently pressing herself against him.

“Hmmf”
Mao Mao glared angrily at her, actually tempted to leave her in the forest. What reason did he have to believe her anyway? To him she was nothing more than a thief and the reason Geraldine was broken.
However, that was not something he could allow himself to do.
image
“I don’t think I can trust that you’re being sincere about this…”
image
“But I am a hero, and leaving such a small, defenseless creature at the mercy of the beasts would go against what I stand for. So I will protect you.”
Losing his legendary weapon was already an unforgivable mistake, he couldn’t allow himself to sink even lower by leaving an…”innocent” to die. That was simply not what he learned from his family.
But he didn’t want this criminal to get the “wrong idea” from his heroic selflessness.
image
“That being said, if it turns out you’re lying the place I will be escorting you to is a cell, understood?”
Yes, he had no idea of how to contain a being that easily flew through his hand, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Sure, sure… Put me inside a cube made out of steel, but that won’t happen!!”  She looked with a smile, her finger pointing at the sky. “Because I burn easily with steel and I would be dust by the time you put me there.”

Feli turned back to see Mao Mao, hoping that her little bit had lightened up the mood, and by the looks of it, nothing had changed at all. “Let’s just get going…”

They trailed in silence after their fall, Feli couldn’t help to feel a bit nostalgic, just walking through the woods. It had been on long-gone days where she would end up lost in the same trees, but she had made herself known to the forest that way, she recognized her land and how to trail and treat it.

“So, Mr. Cat! I need you to do me a favor.” She turned back to see her hiking partner, moving her hand softly to gather some of her sparkles, the outline of a flower forming. “I want you to be on the look for a purple bloom, it means we are on the right path.”

They kept going for a while longer, finding blue and pink but not purple.  The fairy breathed a bit desperate, rubbing her eyes. “We’ve followed the correct and the trees whisper we are near… SO WHERE ARE THOSE PURPLE TIGER LILLIES!?” Long dead vines laid around the path, upront were rocks as if the had been thrown by something or someone. “Oh… No wonder, we hadn’t seen any!! They’re under these!!” She turned to Mao Mao for a moment. “Now what?”

Mao Mao ignored the fairy’s attempts to start conversation, only focusing on the path ahead and being on the lookout for said “purple blooms”. Like everything with everything that had come out of her mouth so far, the sheriff was suspicious of it being a lie, but it was clear she needed him to stay alive in such a dangerous forest.

image

“Because I do have thumbs? I wouldn’t have been able to compete in the Thumb War competition if I didn’t.”

image

“Look, it was hard to be taken seriously as a hero with those, so called, paw beans exposed. I’m not as intimidating as my sisters, that can compensate for them:”

“Father’s...suit? I have no idea of what you’re talking about...”

“You knew it was important to me and you still TOOK IT! All for your sick amusement!”
Mao Mao’s kept breathing harder, but managed to slightly calm his anger, looking down with his now exposed paw clenched into a fist. He was currently infuriated, but hurting such a fragile creature would go against his core values as a hero…if he could even be considered one without Geraldine.
Hearing Feli tell him to just “get another one” just offended him more, she didn’t get it. But his ears did perk up slightly when she talked about “fixing” it, before he went back to a state of anger and skepticism.
image
“Yeah right…is this another one of your hilarious pranks? Haven’t you caused enough damage already?”

“Listen here, you void with eyes!! Whatever’s out in this forest, they are not merciful. You are at least dealing with me, the biggest thing I can even do is curdle milk.” Feli’s glow turned a bright red, she knew of the other folk that wandered in the forest, things that could turn you into trees or steal you away to use in servitude.

She still, however, had to get out of there. Feli belonged to another part of the forest, and some territorial wee folk didn’t forgive. Their presence wasn’t wanted nor needed. But even so, the stubborn cat seemed that they would never forgive for what happened to their sword…

Their sword, Feli could use that in an advantage. “I’ll tell you something, you trail with me and help ourselves somewhere safe… I’ll fix your sword.” She moved back, her leaving golden sparkles, humming softly. “There’s a tree on the south part of the woods, that bloomed after a young maiden cried over its roots for years… It can grant anything your heart desires as long as it is for good.”

Feli turned back, nodding a little at the cat. “You get me to safety, you’ll get your sword fix… And, all the pizzaz of encountering a legendary tree. I’ll even let you know of my name, and I won’t steal yours. Quite the deal!”

It is said in the first pages of the Mao Clan hero’s code that the weapon of choice is a legendary hero’s most important posession, and that it must be taken care of and protected by all costs. And yet there was Mao Mao, on his knees holding a broken sword, his broken sword.
At that point he wasn’t paying atention to Feli’s attempts at comfort, just trying to process what had just happened. What was he going to do? Could he just get another sword?
Then Feli apologized. That snapped him out of it, it wasn’t HIS fault. SHE was the one that stole Geraldine, SHE was the one that kept harassing him for days.
image
“…Sorry?”
He whispered, then violently dropped the broken blade on the ground and turned to the fairy. She hadn’t seen the cat this angry even while he was chasing her.
image
“YOU’RE SORRY!? YOU did this on purpose!!”

“The fact that your sword was broken had nothing to do with me, yes I took but I never meant for this to happen.”  Her wings fluttered in silence. The fairy was taken back at the sudden shouting, her antennae perking up a little as she looked at the cat with crinkled brows.

She wasn’t exactly in a position to even claim it wasn’t her fault, and five centuries had taught her that sometimes, letting the dumb part win was the best thing to do. “Look, its just  sword. I’m sure that you can get a blacksmith to make you another one…” Feli bit down on her tongue, looking into the blade for a few seconds. “Or fix it, if it’s that special.” The fairy breathed softly, looking back at Mao Mao. “We can bring it with us, but we need to get out of here as soon as we can.” She looked up the trees moved softly. “I am just a diminute thing compared to what’s in this forest…” Feli grumbled, turning to Mao Mao. “So, please… I’ll repay you somehow but we have to leave now!”

Mao Mao coughed and slowly opened his eyes. He noticed the glowing figure hovering over him.
The great fall took a toll on the hero´s back, but he still managed to get up, holding onto a nearby rock. Last time he had fallen from such height was during a monster fight as he was about to deal the finishing blow with……Geraldine!
He saw the golden tip of his blade from far away and ran to it as fast as he could. The fairy could see him getting further away until suddently stopping and falling to his knees in front of the broken sword. He didn’t say a word.

It seemed like the forest had followed suit after the cat, Feli had flown to the side, guilt slowly burbling into her heart as she slowly fluttered close to it. The fairy was trying to find words to say. “A-At least it was the sword, you didn’t break anything yourself, right?” When she had taken that blade, Feli had seen the attachment to it. How curious it was, when something gained life because we pour our feelings into it, they saw our strongest and our weakest. To Feli, that was represented by the forest, by the seas. She had been sworn to protect the flora and the fauna that lived within it, but instead, she had hurt someone that part of Mother Earth, she moved a bit closer, her glow bouncing of the sword’s broken tip. “I’m… I’m sorry.”

Mao Mao had already closed his eyes, preparing himself for the impact. Not his worst fall, but it looked like it was going to be pretty bad.
But he didn’t hit the ground. Looking adove he could see the vines wrapped around his hand, as well as the flying little creature he was chasing doing her best to pull him away from the ground below him.
The sheriff stared at the fairy with confusion, who was too focused on her task to stare back. Why was she helping him? Was that another trick?
Out of the sudden he felt a little lighter. Geraldine slip from his red sash and before he could catch it, it fell into the depths of the forest.
image
“NO!!!”
In a fit of panic, the cat began to struggle, trying to free himself from the vine so he could go rescue his beloved blade, making the fairy’s task harder. He demanded to be released while flapping his arms and legs in the air. Before the two of them reached the edge of the cliff, he accidentally hit the creature with his hand, making them fall down together.
Mao Mao tried to hold into the vine once more, but his paw slipped out of his glove, sending both the sheriff and the fairy into freefall. He ended up falling on top of a bush, which luckily softened his fall.

“Stop moving! You’re making this more difficult as it- WAH!?” The fairy had been struggling to flutter up over the edge of the cliff, all of her efforts had come to a halt as a gloved hand slapped her away. The fairy coughed as she fell into the air, it wasn’t the first time this had happened to her, however. She remembered clearly, the first time she gave her gossamer wings a test before falling into a blackberry bush. She had come back with a purple dress and a red face. Feli had to react soon, forcing herself to move her wings as she took hold of the cat’s cape. The vines following after them. THUD! Feli managed to get a fresh breath of air as the green ropes held them over the treetops, but Feli’s head was already a mess as they didn’t hold long as they fell into the branches followed by the ground. The fairy blinked, dust surrounding them for a moment. She looked back at her wings, at least they hadn’t been folded or broken. She looked back where she was and with who. “Hey… You…” She trailed in his fur, looking concerned before flying up. “You’re lucky that we didn’t fall far off…” She shielded her eyes from the sun, there, a few meters away from them was the blade, broken exactly in the middle by a rock. The fairy couldn’t help to wince a little.

Mao Mao coughed and slowly opened his eyes. He noticed the glowing figure hovering over him.

AT LAST! He was finally holding that devilish troublemaker! It felt like nothing could stop him from (figuratively) crushing that criminal under the gloved hands of justice….until he saw it escape his grasp like it was nothing.
image
“Huh!? H-how did you??”
He jumped backwards, he was surprised to see this creature just going through his hand like a ghost. What even was this creature? An hologram? Someone astral proyecting like he had recently experienced with Adorabat? Both seemed unlikely as it had no problem interacting with physical objects.
Whatever this creature was, it was quickly flying away, mocking him with it’s final words he didn’t even bother to listen to under all the rage and confusion.
image
“Oh no, you won’t!”
Without even thinking about if it was worth it, Mao Mao grabbed Geraldine and ran after the fairy, following it into the depths of the forest.
He ran as fast as he could, slicing every tree directly in front of him if necessary. Even the target he was chasing was small, it’s unnatural glow kept the sheriff from losing it, even among all the trees.
However, he was more focused on catching the supposed evil doer than anything in front, or specificaly, below him. Meaning that when Mao Mao’s path encountered a cliff, he couldn’t stop himself, and fell into the trees below.
Suddently, it was silent.

The fairy cackled loudly as she zipped through the treetops and moved around to leave behind the cat. She looked back, seeing the funny creature following close. They all had a story to tell if one listened closely and one could hear their pain if they dared to forsake them. From what had become a simple game of the mouse and the cat, Feli found herself in a position of anger and confusion. She moved around, guiding away from the cat somewhere he couldn’t hurt anything else. Pesky things they were humans, hurting what they couldn’t own and-

Her train of thought suddenly stopped, this wasn’t a human who was hurting trees, this was a creature of mother earth as well. She looked back, a cliff fell around these parts. Using the wind to carry her as fast as she could, she had reached in time to see the red cloth of his cape going down. She wasn’t as strong as some of her elders, but magic… It could create miracles. The vines listened to her, slowly growing before launching into the cliffside, taking a hold of the cat’s paw. But it wasn’t as simple as that. The fairy herself felt the weight of the cat dangling above the deep ground. “Pull yourself up! Pull yourself up!” She said as loudly as she could, sweat forming in her forehead, she gasped softly, as she saw something golden falling away. It was the blade, a large thunk was heard followed by birds flying away. Feli moved the vines slowly trying to pull the black cat up again.

Mao Mao had already closed his eyes, preparing himself for the impact. Not his worst fall, but it looked like it was going to be pretty bad.
